Artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) enables machines to perform tasks typically associated with human intelligence, including learning from experience and adapting to new inputs. Major subfields of AI include machine learning, neural networks, deep learning, cognitive computing, computer vision, and natural language processing, each with diverse applications across sectors such as healthcare, transportation, and security. However, challenges such as data access, biases, job displacement, and ethical concerns must be addressed as AI continues to evolve and integrate into society.

ABOUT
Artificial
intelligence
Artificial intelligence, the ability of a
computer or computer-controlled robot to
perform tasks commonly associated with
intelligent beings.

What is it? Artificial intelligence (AI) makes it

possible for machines to learn from
experience, adjust to new inputs and
perform human-like tasks.
While artificial intelligence
encompasses the idea of a machine
that can mimic human intelligence,
machine learning does not. Machine
learning aims to teach a machine
how to perform a specific task and
provide accurate results by
identifying patterns.
HOW DOES IT AI works by combining large
amounts of data with fast,
WORK? iterative processing and
intelligent algorithms, allowing
the software to learn
automatically from patterns or
features in the data.
Major subfields
• Machine learning automates analytical model building. It
uses methods from neural networks, statistics, operations
research and physics to find hidden insights in data without
explicitly being programmed for where to look or what to
conclude. Ex: Regression , Recommender system, Classifier.
• A neural network is a type of machine learning that is made
up of interconnected units (like neurons) that processes
information by responding to external inputs, relaying
information between each unit. The process requires multiple
passes at the data to find connections and derive meaning
from undefined data.
• Deep learning uses huge neural networks with many layers
of processing units, taking advantage of advances in
computing power and improved training techniques to learn
• COGNITIVE COMPUTING is a subfield of AI that strives for a
natural, human-like interaction with machines. Using AI
and cognitive computing, the ultimate goal is for a
machine to simulate human processes through the ability
to interpret images and speech – and then speak
coherently in response.
• COMPUTER VISION relies on pattern recognition and deep
learning to recognize what’s in a picture or video. When
machines can process, analyze and understand images,
they can capture images or videos in real time and
interpret their surroundings.
• NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSING is the ability of
computers to analyze, understand and generate human

01
Qualities of artificial
intelligence
Intentionality: Artificial intelligence algorithms are designed to make
decisions, often using real-time data. They are unlike passive machines that
are capable only of mechanical or predetermined responses. Using sensors,
digital data, or remote inputs, they combine information from a variety of
different sources, analyze the material instantly, and act on the insights
derived from those data.

Intelligence: AI generally is undertaken in conjunction with machine

learning and data analytics. Machine learning takes data and looks for
underlying trends. If it spots something that is relevant for a practical problem,
software designers can take that knowledge and use it to analyze specific
issues.
AI systems have the ability to learn and adapt as they
make decisions. In the transportation area, for
example, semi-autonomous vehicles have tools that
let drivers and vehicles know about upcoming
congestion, potholes, highway construction, or
other possible traffic impediments. Their advanced
algorithms, sensors, and cameras incorporate
experience in current operations, and use
dashboards and visual displays to present
information in real time so human drivers are able
to make sense of ongoing traffic and vehicular
conditions. And in the case of fully autonomous
vehicles, advanced systems can completely control
the car or truck, and make all the navigational
decisions.
02
APPLICATIONS IN
DIVERSE SECTORS
machines has replaced much of human decisionmaking.
People submit buy and sell orders, and computers match
them in the blink of an eye without human intervention.
Machines can spot trading inefficiencies or market
differentials on a very small scale and execute trades
that make money according to investor instructions.
security: AI can be deployed to sift through the
massive troves of data and video captured by
surveillance and then alert human analysts of
patterns or when there is abnormal or suspicious
activity.
Health care: AI tools are helping designers improve
computational sophistication in health care. For example,
Merantix is a German company that applies deep learning
to medical issues. It has an application in medical
imaging that “detects lymph nodes in the human body in
Computer Tomography (CT) images.”

Transportation: Transportation represents an area where AI and
machine learning are producing major innovations.

systems—use advanced technological capabilities. Those features
include automated vehicle guidance and braking, lane-changing
systems, the use of cameras and sensors for collision avoidance,
the use of AI to analyze information in real time, and the use of
high-performance computing and deep learning systems to adapt
to new circumstances through detailed maps.

resource management, energy utilization, and crime prevention,

among other things.

Social Media
Social Media sites such as Facebook,
Twitter, and Snapchat contain billions
of user profiles, which need to be
stored and managed in a very
efficient way. AI can organize and
manage massive amounts of data. AI
can analyze lots of data to identify the
latest trends, hashtag, and
requirement of different users.

ROBOTICS
Artificial Intelligence has a remarkable
role in Robotics. Usually, general
robots are programmed such that they
can perform some repetitive task, but
with the help of AI, we can create
intelligent robots which can perform
tasks with their own experiences
without pre-programmed.
• Humanoid Robots are best examples
for AI in robotics, recently the
intelligent Humanoid robot named as
Erica and Sophia has been developed
which can talk and behave like
humans.
AI In education
• AI can automate grading so that the tutor can have more time to
teach. AI chatbot can communicate with students as a teaching
assistant.
• AI in the future can be work as a personal virtual tutor for
students, which will be accessible easily at any time and any
place.

and response times.
Data access problems: The key to getting the most out of AI is
having a “data-friendly ecosystem with unified standards and
cross-platform sharing.” AI depends on data that can be
analyzed in real time and brought to bear on concrete problems.
Having data that are “accessible for exploration” in the research
community is a prerequisite for successful AI development.
Biases in data and algorithms: In some instances, certain AI
systems are thought to have enabled discriminatory or biased
practices. Racial issues also come up with facial recognition
software. Most such systems operate by comparing a person’s
face to a range of faces in a large database.

FUTURE OF
ARTIFICIAL
INTELLIGENCE
ENTERTAINMENT
Move over, Netflix. In the future, you could sit on
the couch and order up a custom movie featuring
virtual actors of your choice. Meanwhile, film
studios may have a future without flops:
Sophisticated predictive programs will analyze a
film script’s storyline and forecast its box office
potential.
MEDICINE
AI algorithms will enable doctors and hospitals to
better analyze data and customize their health
care to the genes, environment and lifestyle of
each patient. From diagnosing brain tumors to
CYBERSECURITY
Companies are struggling to stay one step ahead of
hackers. USC experts say the self-learning and automation
capabilities enabled by AI can protect data more
systematically and affordably, keeping people safer from
terrorism or even smaller-scale identity theft. AI-based tools
look for patterns associated with malicious computer
viruses and programs before they can steal massive
amounts of information or cause havoc.
VITAL TASKS
AI assistants will help older people stay independent and
live in their own homes longer. AI tools will keep nutritious
food available, safely reach objects on high shelves, and
monitor movement in a senior’s home. The tools could mow
lawns, keep windows washed and even help with bathing
TRANSPORTATION
The place where AI may have the biggest impact
in the near future is self-driving cars. Unlike
humans, AI drivers never look down at the radio,
put on mascara or argue with their kids in the
backseat. Thanks to Google, autonomous cars are
already here, but watch for them to be ubiquitous
by 2030. Driverless trains already rule the rails in
European cities, and Boeing is building an
autonomous jetliner (pilots are still required to
put info into the system).
“The near-term effects of ai are just
overwhelmingly positive. The longer-term
effect is more of an open question and is
very hard to predict.”
