DVD and Blu-ray Releases for November 23rd, 2010

November 22nd, 2010

This Friday is Black Friday, but there's a lull on the home market with not a whole lot of great releases. (This is the usual pattern for Thanksgiving.) The biggest hit coming out is The Expendables, which should top the chart, while there are a number of smaller releases that are in contention for Pick of the Week. The best of these is Metropolis: The Complete Metropolis, which comes out on Blu-ray this week after being released on DVD last week. More...

Featured Blu-ray Review: Tyler Perry Collection

November 21st, 2010

For quite a while, most Tyler Perry films have been released on the home market, in standard definition with no Blu-ray release. This week, the studio is rectifying that situation and releasing his entire back catalog on High Definition. That's five titles, starting with... More...

DVD Sales - Shopaholic Rings Up the Sales

July 7th, 2009

It was a relatively slow week for new releases, but we still had a new number one DVD on top of the sales chart this week. That DVD was Confessions of a Shopaholic with 554,000 units and $9.51 million in consumer spending at retail. More...

DVD Rentals - Breaking The Code

July 7th, 2009

There was a surprise on top of the rental chart as two new releases battled it out for first place. Surprisingly, The Code won the fight with roughly 16% more rentals than second place Confessions of a Shopaholic opened with. More...

DVD Sales - Torino Runs a Victory Lap

June 30th, 2009

Gran Torino was able to top all new releases to earn first place on this week's DVD sales chart. It was able to do this with sales of 1.44 million units and $19.40 million for the week, which represents just a 45% drop-off for the week, and 4.05 million units and $62.33 million in total, which is in the top five for the year. DVD Releases for June 16th, 2009 - Part I

June 16th, 2009

A strangely busy week for spotlight reviews with ten of them representing nine DVDs and seven Blu-rays. It would have been a bigger list, but several are late. As for the best of the best, I'm giving an tentative DVD Pick of the Week rating to Transformers - Generation One - 25th Anniversary Edition - Season One. However, those will to wait for the retail version of Matrix of Leadership - Complete Series, or willing to spend more on the limited release will want to give this one a pass. Additionally, we have a DVD Puck of the Week, as the Canadian release, Murdoch Mysteries - Season One, is a must have for all loyal Canucks. With the number of spotlight reviews, the column had to be split into to, with the second part found here More...

Witch Wins the Race, but Box Office Slows Down

March 17th, 2009

For the first time in a long time, 2009 showed signs of weakness at the box office as all three new releases were unable to match expectations. Overall the box office was down 14% from last weekend to $101 million. More troubling was the fact that is was down 16% from the same weekend last year. However, to be fair, this weekend last year saw the debut of Horton Hears a Who, which was the biggest hit of 2008 at that point and opened with $45 million. More...

Will Watchmen Win the Race to the Top?

March 13th, 2009

There are some who think there will be a close race for first place on the box office chart this weekend with Watchmen having a shot at repeating on top ahead of Race to Witch Mountain. I am not one of those people. After bowing to the majority two weeks in a row, I think Watchmen will see a bigger than expected drop-off, while Race to Witch Mountain will open with a larger than expected box office. On a related note, 2009's winning streak over 2008 could come to an end, as this weekend last year saw the debut of Horton Hears a Who, which opened with $45 million. That's more than the consensus prediction for the top film over this weekend. In fact, it could be more than the three new releases will earn combined. More...

Watchmen Tops 2009 Chart but Below Record Levels

March 10th, 2009

Watchmen opened with the biggest weekend box office of the year so far, but it was below the record-breaking levels some predicted. That said, the overall box office was still up 4% from last weekend, and more importantly, up 8% from the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2009 has brought in $1.96 billion, which is about 14% more than last year's pace. This is down from earlier in the year, but still very impressive nonetheless. More...

Weekend Estimates: Heavily Front-Loaded Watchmen Posts Big Opening

March 8th, 2009

Watchmen opened big over the weekend, earning a mighty $55.655 million, according to Warner Bros.' Sunday estimate. Impressive as that debut is, the movie did fade quite dramatically through the weekend after posting a $25.135 million opening day on Friday. Saturday's estimate stands at $18.7 million, down 25% from the movie's opening day, although the decline is slightly artifical because Friday's total includes $4.55 million from midnight shows. Sunday's projected of $11.8 million would be down 37% from Saturday, which is fairly typical for an opening weekend. Overall, it's a debut that Warner Bros. (and Fox, who has a gross participation deal) will be happy with, but the long-term performance of the movie is very hard to judge at this point. More...

Be on the Lookout for Falling Records

March 5th, 2009

Is it ironic that a film called Watchmen is opening the same weekend we set our clocks ahead one hour? Perhaps this is part of some brilliant marketing strategy. Regardless, Watchmen is the only wide release of the week, and it has a lot of buzz surrounding it. So much so that it has a shot at breaking records, while earning more than all four big releases last year did combined. More...

Jonas Brothers Hit a Sour Note

March 3rd, 2009

We had a surprise film at the top of the chart as The Jonas Brothers proved they were no competition for Miley Cyrus. In fact, they were no match for Tyler Perry in a dress. Fortunately, while there was severe weakness at the top, the overall box office was still strong at $111 million. Yes, that was down 22% from last weekend, but it was 15% head of the same weekend last year. Meanwhile, 2009 continues to lead 2008 by a sizable margin at $1.79 billion to $1.53 billion, a 17% gap. More...

Updated Weekend Estimates: Madea Holds Top Spot as Jonas Brothers Bomb

March 1st, 2009

It is fair to say that expectations were generally too high for Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience this weekend, but even so its opening weekend, estimated at $12.7 million, is a major disappointment. The biggest surprise is that it didn't even take number one spot on the weekend chart, in spite of Madea Goes to Jail dropping nearly 60% from its opening weekend. Madea finished with $16.5 million, for a two week total of $64.8 million. Slumdog Millionaire earned an estimated $12.15 million on the back of its big Oscar wins. That's the biggest weekend so far for the movie, and its box office take has actually grown for 13 out of the 16 weekends it has been in theaters. More...

Jonas Brothers take on Miley Cyrus

February 26th, 2009

There won't be much of a race for the top of the box office chart with The Jonas Brothers being the only film with a legitimate shot at number one. There is a question whether the trio can live up to Miley Cyrus's box office triumph with Best of Both Worlds. And then there's the question of 2009 maintaining its blistering pace over 2008. I think the latter is more likely than the former. More...

Madea got it Made on the Per Theater Chart

February 25th, 2009

The overall box office leader, Madea Goes to Jail, was also the leader on the Per Theater Chart with an average of $20,192. The only other member of the $10,000 club was Gomorrah, which barely managed that feat with an average of $10,087 over the weekend. More...

Madea Takes Down Competition

February 24th, 2009

The Oscars combined with the post-holiday weekend left the overall box office dramatically lower this weekend compared to last. In fact, it was down 24% to $142 million; however, compared to the same weekend last year, that was up by just under 30%. Year-to-date, 2009 has pulled in $1.65 billion, which is 23% above last year's pace of $1.34 billion. There's no way 2009 can keep up this pace for too much longer, but each weekend it does will help future box office scores. After all, a lot of people see trailers, posters, and other advertisements for the first time when going to the movie theaters. More free advertising now will turn into more people going to the theaters later on. More...

Weekend Estimates: Tyler Perry Sets New Personal Best

February 22nd, 2009

Madea Goes to Jail dominated Oscar weekend at the movies with an impressive $41.1 million opening, according to Lionsgate's Sunday estimate. That's a record for Perry, topping the $30 million debut of Madea's Family Reunion two years ago. Even after factoring in the exhibitor's share of box office, Madea Goes to Jail has already recovered its $17.5 million production budget. More...

Movie Website Reviews for the Weekend of February 20th, 2009

Oscar weekend means fans of quality cinema have better things to do that go out and watch quality cinema. This means there's a shortage of top-notch movie releases. Madea Takes on Oscar

February 20th, 2009

The Oscars are being handed out this weekend, which means a lot of moviegoers will be more interested in watching the ceremonies on TV than going to the theaters. Studios know this, which explains the weak slate of movies coming out this week. In fact, there's only one film opening truly wide this week, and only one other that comes close. That said, it's still better than last year and 2009 should continue its amazing pace. More...

Contest - Criminal Mind

February 13th, 2009

This could be a tough week for the box office prediction contest, as our target film is Madea Goes to Jail. Tyler Perry's films tend to outperform expectations, and Madea is his most popular character. But the lack of crossover appeal leaves me wondering if this is a fad and his popularity will end as fast as it grew? Will this be the movie that does it? Regardless, it is the target film this week, and in order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of Madea Goes to Jail. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of I Served the King of England on DVD, as well as Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Mystery of the Easter Chipmunk on DVD and D.E.A. - Season One - Detroit on DVD. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Mystery of the Easter Chipmunk on DVD and D.E.A. - Season One - Detroit on DVD. Additionally, one lucky entrant will be chosen at random, and they will win the third copy of Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Mystery of the Easter Chipmunk on DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

2009 Preview: February

February 1st, 2009

2009 got off to a great start and February hopes to continue that run, but I don't think that's likely. First of all, none of the releases coming out this month look like they have what it takes to reach $100 million. Or even $80 million. This means the best film of this month will likely be lower than the biggest-earning film of last month and the biggest earner of this month last year. Hopefully there will be fewer outright misses and more mid-level hits, which will help 2009 keep pace with 2008. More...

More...
