The opening scene of The Sound Of Music is always a thrill. The great panning shot across the mountains to the lovely Julie Andrews, one of Britain's greatest stars, about to burst into song, is a rollercoaster start to one of the most popular singalong movies in the gay community.

Battleship Potemkin, Eisenstein's modernist classic, defines the vertiginous image of the individual swept aside by blind social forces as an innocent child hurtles down the Odessa steps, a powerless victim of the struggle against tyranny and oppression.

Dumbo is Disney's most brilliant cartoon. A film all about difference and the hurt others can cause. Keeps sentimentality at bay with powerful animation and a great score. The moment when Dumbo falls from the top of the big tent and starts to fly is triumphant.
