Naruto and sasuke are basically the shounen anime version of Catherine and heathcliffe. They have an immediate, magnetic pull to each other that defies all reason, and they will compromise aspects of themselves for each other that they would not for anyone else.

Naruto let Karui beat him brutally rather than give out information on sasuke, despite the fact that he was an Akatsuki affiliate at that point, an organization that was a direct threat to his and others’ lives. Sasuke pretty much explicitly tells chino that his actions on behalf of Konoha are really just on behalf of naruto, and his vision, even if admits earlier he can’t quite ‘do things like him’ - he doesn’t want to work within the system in the same way, understandably, since Konoha is comprised of complete lunatics. It’s not necessarily healthy (though unhealthy =/= abusive in this case) but that’s not the aim here, and both of them were cheated out of the opportunity to have a healthy relationship due to the extreme abnormality of their lives

The point of their relationship is that they basically imprint on each other at the loneliest and most vulnerable period of both their lives, and that connection can’t be shaken. It’s a fact of their characters now that can’t be rationalized away, and it’s why they never actually choose anyone else over each other even when it makes ‘logical’ sense to.

The thing is i think the reincarnation stuff was wholly unnecessary if they weren’t gonna set up Senju vs. uchiha as a central conflict from the beginning, but naruto didnt invent the underdog is secretly a super special chosen one trope. Jon snow isn’t a bastard, he’s the prince who was promised. Harry Potter isn’t a nobody abused orphan, he’s the boy who lived. Additionally, finding out you’re the chosen one at like age 17 doesnt cancel out the psychological, physical, emotional damage that comes from having zero adult guidance/attention/actively being reviled as a pariah everywhere you go, and then finding conditional acceptance based on your capacity to singlehandedly protect literally everyone. Like come on lol.
