Unauthorized Newsies Productions
Before Newsies: The Musical was created and then released for licensing, schools, summer camps, and youth theaters across the United States put on their own unauthorized Newsies productions based on the 1992 film.
These productions were technically legal as long as Disney's name wasn't attached and admission was free.
Pikatee Music "Newsies Libretto"
An unofficial Newsies stage musical adaptation written by Philip McBride and distributed by Pikatee Music. This script was likely written in the late 90s or early 2000s and uses both the 1992 film and Hard Promises.
The libretto also includes "Proud of Your Boy" as a solo for David.

As of yet, no recordings of productions that used this libretto have been found.
Newsies Tufts (2005)
Tufts University presented Newsies at Balch Arena Theater in 2005. This production follows the 1992 film with minor changes including part of the historical Kid Blink's speech at the rally.
There is one recording dated April 26, 2005 available on YouTube.
Newsies Santaluces High School (2007)
Santaluces High School presented Newsies in April of 2007. This production features an impressive set design, complete with movable tiered structures similar to later official Newsies stage musical set design, and a person dressed up and painted as the Horace Greely statue in Newsies Square.
This version also follows the 1992 film, but with the addition of Falcon In The Dive from The Scarlet Pimpernel as Pulitzer's villain song in the second act.

- Jack sitting in Pulitzer's chair like the little shit he is
- unfortunately no Pulitzer threatening David to get to Jack or alley scene because the tape just had to run out at that part, didn't it?
- after Jack comes and beats up the Delancey's, he helps Sarah up but then David is just dying in the corner for a bit until Sarah notices him and they both go help him and it made me crack up for some reason my poor baby boy
- newsies distributing papers to the audience during Once and For All
- "Yeah if that's what you want" cue Santa Fe music and Jack has a walk of shame
- a really cute Jarah moment where Jack spins Sarah around and then they run off
BUT! The highlight of this whole thing was Pulitzer, his actor really committed to the bit and kinda gave me Don Knotts if he'd gotten his way and was cast in Newsies as Pulitzer vibes...

I should never be allowed to watch a live production of Newsies because my happy stimming would get VIOLENT man it would be DANGEROUSLY
i saw it three times back in august (one of which i sat front row and the jack bowed to me while i was in my davey cosplay) and the people next to me had to have been sick of my happy stimming and tears
