What is Taghūt ? Allah mentions the word Tāghūt in the Qur’an on several occasions. He instructs us to shun and reject the Taghūt and to not seeking judgement towards it.

Allah mentions the term on a number of occasions:

وَلَقَدْ بَعَثْنَا فِي كُلِّ أُمَّةٍ رَّسُولًا أَنِ اعْبُدُوا اللَّهَ وَاجْتَنِبُوا الطَّاغُوتَ

And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying], "Worship Allah and avoid Taghut."

[Surah al-Nahl : 36]

Have you seen those (hyprocrites) who claim that they believe in that which has been sent down to you, and that which was sent down before you, and they wish to go for judgement (in their disputes) to the Taghut (false judges, etc.) while they have been ordered to reject them. But Shaitan (Satan) wishes to lead them far astray.

[Surah al-Nisa : 60]

Whoever disbelieves in Taghut and believes in Allah, then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break.

[Surah al-Baqarah : 256]

Have you not seen those who were given a portion of the Scripture? They believe in Jibt and Taghut and say to the disbelievers that they are better guided as regards the way than the believers (Muslims).

[Surah al-Nisa : 51]

Ibn al-Qayyim said:

“The ṭāghūt is all that which causes the person to exceed the limits with regards to that which is worshipped, followed, or obeyed. So the ṭāghūt in any nation is whosoever turns to other than Allah and His Messenger for matters of judgement; or is pleased to be worshipped besides Allah; or is followed without a clear proof from Allah; or is obeyed in that which is known to be disobedience to Allah.”

— [I‘lām al-Muwaqqi‘īn 1/53]

A Taghūt can be in various forms as explained by Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab

“And the Tawāghīt are many, but their leaders are five:

  1. Iblīs (may Allah curse him),
  2. Whoever is worshipped and is pleased with that,
  3. Whoever calls people to the worship of himself,
  4. Whoever claims to possess anything of the knowledge of the unseen,
  5. And whoever judges by other than what Allah has sent down.”

— [Ath-Thalathatul-Usūl]

Thus, anyone who is worshiped besides Allah, and pleased with that, is a Taghūt. Likewise, the person who claims to possess knowledge of the unseen, as well as the scholar who is (pleased to be) blindly followed in other than that which is the guidance of the Messenger (ﷺ), and the rulers who govern and judge with other than that which Allah has revealed or replace the shari'a of Allah with their desires and man made laws or abrogate the laws of Allah and implement their own laws are all Tawaghīt, according to the Divine Sharī’ah. Therefore, in order to be considered a true believer in Allah and the Last Day the Muslim must disbelieve in and reject at-Taghūt, irrespective of the form it assumes. And this act must precede his declaration of faith, for indeed the first pillar of Tawhīd is an-Nafy (i.e. negation). For instance, the statement (لا إله إلا الله), which represents Tawhīdul-Ulūhiyyah, consists of two parts:

1. “لا إله”

(There is none worthy of worship), which is an-Nafy, negates the existence of anything worthy of worship.

2. “إلا الله” (Except Allãh),

which is al-Ithbãt (affirmation), affirms that all worship is due to Allah alone.

Hence, the first obligation binding upon the slaves is disbelief in all that is worshiped besides the Most High.

Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal (رحمه الله) said:

“Jihad will continue from the time Allah sent the Messenger ﷺ until the last group fights against the Dajjal. The oppression of any oppressor will not harm them.”

Ibn Ḥazm al-Andalusī said :

قال ابن حزم الأندلسي : وما شيء من دواهي الدُّنْيا يعدل الافتراق، ولو سالت الأرواح به فضلاً عن الدموع كان قليلاً.

There is nothing in the calamities of this Dunyā [world] that equals separation. If souls were shed because of it, let alone tears, it would still be little.

Sheikh Muhammad bin Salih al Uthaymeen said:

«وعلماء السوء الذين يدعون إلى الضلال والكفر أو يدعون إلى البدع أو إلى تحليل ما حرم الله أو تحريم ما أحل الله : طواغيت»

The evil scholars who call to misguidance and disbelief, or call to innovations or to making permissible what Allah has forbidden or forbidding what Allah made permissible — They are Tawaghīt (tyrants).”

Imam Abdul Qadir al-Jilani (رحمه الله) said:

“ The madhabs of the Rafidhis have been likened to the Jewish (madhabs). A-Sha’bi said: “Loving the Rafidhis is like loving the Jews.” The Jews said: “The Imamate is only suitable for a man from the family of David.” The Rafidhis said: “The Imamate is only suitable for a man from the descendants of Ali ibn Abi Talib.” The Jews said: “There is no jih@d in the way of Allah until the Maseeh a-Dajjal emerges and descends from the sky.”

The Rafidhis said: “There is no jih@d in the way of Allah until the Mahdi emerges and a caller calls from the sky." The Jews delay the Maghrib prayer until the stars appear, and likewise the Rafidhis delay it. The Jews move away from the Qibla a little, and so do the Rafidhis.

The Jews light a light during prayer, and so do the Rafidhis. The Jews close their doors during prayer, and so do the Rafidhis. The Jews consider the blood of a Muslim permissible, and so do the Rafidhis. The Jews don't hold that there's a waiting period for women, and so do the Rafidhis. The Jews don't hold that there's the triple divorce, and so do the Rafidhis.

The Jews have distorted the Torah, and the Rafidhis did the Quran, because they said that the Quran was changed and altered, and that its organization and arrangement were infringed, and that it was altered from as it was revealed, and that it was read in ways that were not proven from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and that some of it was taken away from and some of it was added to.

The Jews hate Gabriel, peace be upon him, and they say that he is our enemy from the angels. Likewise, a group of the Rafidhis say that Gabriel, peace be upon him, made a mistake in the revelation to Muhammad ﷺ and that he was only sent to Ali, may Allah be pleased with him. They lied, may they perish until the end of time.”

ʿAllāmah Sulaymān al-ʿAlwān - فك الله اسره - beautifully explains that,

There is no difference between, shirk in the Ḥukm of Allāh and between the shirk of worshipping idols.

Muftī Ibn Ibrāhīm - رحمه الله - said,

“Perhaps you will say: Maybe he said about man-made law: ‘𝙄 𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙫𝙚 𝙞𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙛𝙖𝙡𝙨𝙚𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙙.’

This has no effect. Rather, it is casting aside the Sharīʿā.

It is like someone who said: ‘𝙄 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥 𝙞𝙙𝙤𝙡𝙨, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙄 𝙗𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙫𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙮 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙛𝙖𝙡𝙨𝙚𝙝𝙤𝙤𝙙’.”

Sheikh Nasir Al-Fahd says ;

Istighfar is not only for our sins but also for shortcomings in acts of worship. That is why the Messenger of Allah (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) used to make Istighfar after every Salah even though he was free from shortcomings

May Allah hasten the release of our beloved Shaykh Nasir bin Hamad al Fahd

This was the stance of Shaykh Sulāyman al-Alwān in prison when he smiled and swore:

“By Allah, I am pleased with this trial, and all praise is due to Allah! I see victories unfolding.”

O Allah, free Your servant Sulaymān al-‘Alwān, grant him steadfastness, relieve his distress, and grant him victory over those who have wronged him.

The Imām should pray in his qunūt against the one whose oppression has become rampant, by name, whether it is a state or an individual. It is mentioned in the Ṣaḥīḥ [al-Bukhārī] that the Prophet ﷺ would pray in his qunūt against [the tribes of] Riʿl, Dhakwān, Liḥyān and ʿUṣayyah.
