I'm thinking about the title...Heretic. Not Apostate or Infidel or Atheist. A heretic is someone who believes in the one true religion but is under some kind of odd or different or wrong impression about what its tenets are. So who is that? Who or what is the heretic from Heretic?

Reed, who correctly notices that religion sociologically speaking is a system of social control but takes all the wrong lessons from that about what it means to people and how it justifies treating people? Paxton, who wants to reincarnate as a butterfly rather than getting exalted into Mormon space heaven or whatever? The "normal" forms of Judaism/Christianity/Islam that Reed makes the girls defend in addition to defending their own religion? Barnes, for leaping to the task and becoming those other religions' strongest soldier in their arguments?

So much to consider.

So I think the heretic from Heretic is Paxton, and here's why.

In her last scene with Reed, Paxton is not interested in almost any of the subjects the characters have covered so far. She doesn't try to refute anything Reed said earlier; she doesn't pick up any of Barnes's original counterarguments; she doesn't concede anything to Reed either, not about control or the simulation hypothesis or religious misogyny (as if Reed of all people has any credibility left on that topic!) or any of it. She doesn't talk about religion as set of empirical truth-claims or even as system of social organization. No Campbellian pseudo-mythology, nothing about "iterations", not even any Mormon missionary standbys about prophecy or the plan of salvation.

She wants to talk about prayer, and she wants to talk about religion as a means of expressing concern for and closeness to others.

This is especially obvious in the originally scripted version, in which Reed can no longer speak coherently and doesn't ask her to pray for him and his prophets; she brings up prayer and that Templeton Foundation study herself, apropos of absolutely nothing, and Mr. Euphoria just has to listen as a teenage Swiftie who thinks the word "pornography" has a double O in it somewhere bombards him with Buberian truth nukes.

Paxton is a heretic in the cruel, cynical One True Religion of Control, the heresiarch of the heresy of caring.

Somehow it feels like tumblr is accidentally the perfect social media site, because none of the things that I love about it make sense as features the way we use them. Tags are for organization, but we also use them to have our little thoughts in without raising them to the status of main text. The queue makes sense for keeping a steady stream of Content going if you're trying to Build a Social Media Presence, but really we use it just to bank posts we want to reblog without flooding everyone else's dash. You can't see how many followers anyone else has, which I just have to assume was an oversight because it flies in the face of everything about social media, and it's great because you can never quantify anyone's Influence so everyone's essentially on the same level. There's no way they planned for giffing to become such a Thing, because before tumblr, gifs were practically relics of the early internet days, a novelty, usually kind of tacky, and now they've become a sort of folk art form. You can reblog an entire conversation, not just a single post, so there's a whole genre of humor that exists here that can't really propagate like that on any other social platform. Honestly this website is just a little freak of nature that cannot possibly have been intended, and that's why no media company has been able to figure out what to do with it, because it makes no sense within the larger social media ecosystem. I love it.
