Hey yknow how Viper was born without fangs, but instead of being rendered helpless as her family thought she’d be, she instead used her other skills to become the best warrior in her clan?

And how Tigress had severe, destructive anger issues when she was younger, but instead of being painted as a “problem child” she was instead taught her how to channel her emotions into something constructive?

And how Crane trained extra hard to impress a girl, and was by all rights the hero of his own story, but he still didn’t get her in the end? And how the girl isn’t shamed for it?

It’s almost as if you get more mileage out of treating your characters (and the people they resemble) with compassion than you do just shamelessly stamping them with your own misconceptions and hang ups.

The whole central ethos of the franchise is that there’s no such thing as being The Best™ - there’s just being the best version of yourself you can be, and honoring/channeling your own strengths is the wise and badass thing to do.

It seems like all of the resources I can easily find online for identifying wolves vs dogs are either massive and difficult to understand without prior knowledge of the subject, or extremely bare-bones and miss a lot of key information. I tried to hit a comfortable middle-ground. (sorry if it’s a little wordy) This tutorial is made as a reference for drawing, so everything but purely visual differences between dogs and wolves have been left out. I’ve been wanting to make this for a while now, so I’m glad I finally sat down and did it! **EDIT** When it comes to the section on wolfdogs, please take it with a grain of salt. With something as complicated as genetics, they are of course, not going to be as simple as I make it seem. What features different levels of content can display, and even which percentages designate which levels of content are often hotly debated within the wolfdog community. At this point I’ve elected not to change the image set itself because: a. it’s a huge pain in the ass b. this is a tutorial for beginning artists. It’s meant to be a hugely simplified version of the topic, and I’ve stated clearly that it is NOT to be used in real-world identification. **EDIT 2** A couple people have noted that the puppies section is a little misleading. Wolf puppies will always be born a solid brown, but that brown can range from a very dark brown (appearing as black) to a llight, gray-ish brown. The important point is that wolf pups will always be a solid color with even less distinguishable markings than even adult wolves.  (also this guide does not include color possibilities related to birth defects or other genetic anomalies such as albinism) ((Huge thanks to yourdogisnotawolf. who’s blog inspired me to make this and for digging up that amazing picture of the wolf/lab mix))

I am so glad this got the amount of attention that it has! And I agree completely that this is a wonderful and simplified guide for beginner artists! As you said, when it comes to genetics, they are complicated and whenever you do any kind of overview or simplified thing with them, things are going to be left out and I think you did a wonderful job with this.

what's a characteristic you've given your Lamb and why?

I'll go first: My Lamb talks a lot. They're a rambler, and I got the idea from spamming the 'B to Bleat' button in game. Lil dude has a special button to repeatedly make noise

My Avana has a great love of studying and learning, especially about other species, their cultures, and of course, their biology. This proved to be a great help when managing a cult with such a wide diversity of species.

In fact, she has a collection of self-written books that function as field journals where she documents everything she learns about the different animals that inhabit the cult's lands. She even has volumes dedicated to extinct species (besides lambs) and uses them as a guide when organizing events or making changes to the cafeteria menus and work schedules, taking into account the pros and cons of her followers' species.

Additionally, after a while, she began keeping track of certain followers... technically, she has a sort of collectible album where she notes each species/color/variety of her followers and tries to acquire at least one of each for one generation or find the most extravagant appearances (in short... my lamb collects followers like Pokémon cards).

Okay, so tomorrow will be a stressful but important day for me.

So to ease my anxiety a bit... could you share some cool things with me? Words or fun facts, whatever you like?

My beautiful little internet people... as I predicted, today was immensely stressful and exhausting, but it was also exciting.

Today was my thesis defense, and everything went perfectly, thank God!! I am immensely grateful for the support I've received here from each and every one of you, your words of encouragement, and even the help I received from several artists I admire who volunteered their time to help me... Thank you!!

A special mention to the messages and information I received yesterday in this post. I had fun reading and researching them online :D I love reading these kinds of fun facts...!!

the rubber duck

For anyone curious what they mean by the rubber duck, rubber duck debugging is a tactic used by programmers to figure out bugs in the code. To do it, they explain the code, verbally, line by line, to the rubber duck until they find it. 

It’s also very useful for writers, and I’ve used it multiple times with rubber ducks, stuffed animals, and my friends.

I literally cannot count the number of times I’ve gone to someone and told them ‘I can’t figure out what’s wrong with my story, please let me explain it to you’ and that was all it took. Sometimes they ask helpful questions like ‘did you remember to feed them’ or ‘so is this all on the same day’ but other times I don’t even need that, it just figures itself out as soon as I try to explain it to someone else.

It’s one of my go-to pieces of writing advice. You’re stuck on your story? sit down and tell me/someone all about it.
