Clear skin is more than just skincare: Gut Health

(A science based read)

What you eat is shown through your skin and on body. If your constantly shoving junk down your throat, junk is what will be shown on you. Essentially what you eat is what you are.

Eat bad -> bad skin

Eat good -> good skin

If your constantly breaking out and you feel icky. You need to figure out what is up with your gut health.

Research suggests many skin disorders are linked to an altered or unbalanced gut microbiome.

โ€œWhen the relationship between gut microbiome and the immune system is impaired, subsequent effects can be triggered on the skin, potentially promoting the development of skin diseases.โ€

โ€œ13 Several dermatologic conditions, such as acne, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and rosacea are linked with intestinal dysbiosis. 223 Many studies have associated gastrointestinal health with skin homeostasis and allostasis, and there is evidence of a bidirectional interaction between the gut and the skin.โ€

Diet, drugs and other consumed substances affect skin through gut microbiome:

โ€œSeveral studies have related the diversity and pathogenicity of the gut microbiome to skin disorders, which can be significantly altered by long-term dietary patterns. 43,105โ€“107 Diet can affect the skin condition both positively and negatively through alteration of the gut microbiome, indicating that there is a relationship between the skin and the gut. 16 Not only diet, but also many synthetic and natural products consumed by humans as drugs can provide direct and indirect evidence on the connection between gut microbiome and skin.โ€

High and low fat diet:

โ€œIn the gut, a diet high in industrial trans-fatty acids increases the number of harmful microbes (such as Desulfovibrionaceae and Proteobacteria) while suppressing populations of advantageous microorganisms (e.g. members of Bacteroidetes, Lachnospiraceae, and Bacteroidales). 121 Refined and hydrogenated oils (e.g., soybean, sunflower, safflower, canola, corn, and vegetable oils) can cause inflammation in the gut, which then manifests on the skin.โ€

Industrially produced trans fat can be found in margarine, vegetable shortening, Vanaspati ghee, fried foods, and baked goods such as crackers, biscuits and pies. Baked and fried street and restaurant foods often contain industrially produced trans fat.

Prebiotics:

โ€œ133,134 Prebiotics, such as fructooligosaccharides, galactooligosaccharides, inulin, polydextrose, lactulose, sorbitol, and xylitol are a promising group of compounds that modulate the gut microbiome and can also provide skin benefits.โ€

โ€œThe effect of prebiotics on the skin condition is also obvious. For example, a Lactobacillus extract helps to reduce the size of acne lesions as well as inflammation by reducing skin erythema, improving skin barrier function and lowering the microbial counts on skin.โ€

types of prebiotics include:

  • Chicory root
  • Garlic
  • Onion
  • Dandelion greens
  • Apples
  • Bananas
  • Jerusalem artichoke
  • Asparagus

Probiotics:

โ€œProbiotics can prevent gut colonization by pathogens and support anti-inflammatory responses by producing metabolites with anti-inflammatory properties. The most common probiotic microbes currently in use belong to the genera Bacillus, Bifidobacterium, Enterococcus, Escherichia, Lactobacillus, Saccharomyces, and Streptococcus. 143,144 Several beneficial effects of probiotic consumption have been demonstrated on many dermatological conditions, thus proving the existence of the gut-skin axis.โ€

Common types of probiotics include:

Lactobacillus: This is a common probiotic found in fermented foods, such as yogurt.

Bifidobacterium: This probiotic is found in some dairy products and helps with the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

Saccharomyces boulardii: This is a type of yeast found in many probiotics. You can find these probiotics and more in supplements and select foods.

How to give the appearance of bigger eyes and lips.

Bigger lips ๐Ÿ’‹

Volufiline promotes lipid storage, leading to an increase of a diposite volume in fatty tissue, resulting in plump and fuller lips.

- A reddit comment

Hyaluronic acid is used to reduce these lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging. Hyaluronic acid can make your lips fuller and younger-looking.

โ€œtake the hyaluronic acid serum you use for your face and apply it to your lips, following it up with a generous layer of a rich and occlusive balm. Choosing a thick lip balm is key, possibly one made from Vaselineโ€ - vogue

*slightly* over-line the lips to to give the appearance of bigger lips using natural shades to line the lips.

Example:

Bigger eyes ๐Ÿ‘€

(Long) Lashes can make your eyes look bigger and more youthful. You should focus on both the bottom and top lashes with lash extensions or mascara.

Example: Manwha lashes

Winged eyeliner can help elongate and draw attention to the eyes, helping them seem bigger. Drawing with a less harsher colour like anything close but softer than black to place in the inner corners of the eye, making it more sharp.

Highlighting the inner corners will bring focus to the eye area.

Lowe set eye brows which are slightly thin will also give the appearance of bigger eyes (itโ€™s okay if you donโ€™t have them tho!). Fill brows in as normal.

Example:

Eyeshadow placement will also help on emphasising the roundness of the eye. Adding more emphasis on your under eye fat by drawing aegyo sal and darkening the lower-lash line especially on the outer corner by using a dark brown or a softer colour than black. If you want, you can also darken the lid near to the upper lash line with a subtle warm brown or similar colour to the bottom lash line.

Blush placement should be placed on the apples of the cheeks to bring focus near the eyes.

everything you need to make your own personal beauty binder ๐ŸŽ€

  • disclaimer: this post is heavily inspired by @tomb-of-ligeia and @daphne-dauphinoise, and early 2010s beauty youtubers. itโ€™s always kind to credit your inspo <3
  • inspired by the lookbooks and makeup charts used by makeup artists designers at high fashion runways shows and childhood bratz coloring and activity books. the law of attraction is at use heavily with this binder (writing down goals and wishlists)!
  • you should be keeping diy recipes you find in here.
  • *you donโ€™t need a physical binder. some people function better with digital mediums. i prefer anything physical and concrete. but you can do all this in something like a notion, or your notes app, etc.

why? ๐ŸŽ€

a cute girly hobby (esp for type A, anal retentive, or analytical personalities/extremely creative, hands on people) to keep track of your routines, motivate you to keep yourself maintained, and figure out what works best for you. itโ€™s nothing too serious, just a girly pastime for people that maybe buy too many products, slip up on routines, or donโ€™t what looks best on your features. have fun!

what to record in your binder? ๐ŸŽ€

an intro sheet 10 different topics divided by tabbed sections: your personal features, makeup, body, fashion, skincare, hair, fragrance, nails, treatments/procedures, salons/spas/referrals/contacts ๐ŸŽ€

intro sheet ๐ŸŽ€

  • here, you should keep your goals, desired look, and how you want to perceive yourself.
your personal features
  1. a chart of your color season. mine is cool winter. you can use color season for whatever, i choose to apply it to my makeup.
  2. your natural body shape. this will help you choose the best clothes to flatter your silhouette.
  3. a close up, unfiltered clear photo of your bare face. note your skin type, color, undertone, and any other things that stand out to you.
  4. note what you wanna enhance and what you wanna improve. this will help throughout your binder.
makeup
  1. put on a light layer of every lipstick/lip gloss/etc. you have and make kiss shaped swatches in your binder. note the shade, brand, and finish. then the mood/occasion in which youโ€™d wear it.
  2. swatch all your lip liners, again leaving the details of the product.
  3. swatch your foundation shades. note the finish, name and brand.
  4. make a sheet dedicated to all your โ€œholy grailโ€, essential products.
  5. swatch your eyeshadow palettes. i have all my shimmer pigments swatches and itโ€™s the prettiest thing to look at.
  6. do you have any go to makeup looks? your casual look, going out look, no makeup makeup look, etc.? do these looks and take high quality pics. make personalized face charts by printing them out and noting the steps and products you used.
  7. take c*nty pics of your lashes after trying on all your mascaras/falsies. note the effects and when you would be most likely to wear them.
  8. print out any pics of interesting makeup looks and products you wanna try.
  9. try on lip combos and kiss swatch them. iโ€™m doing this because i do amazing lip combos all the time but i forget which products i used, and itโ€™s hard to replicate the look.
body
  1. take a stick figure-esque picture of yourself and print it out. any outfit you want to buy, print and clip it out first and see if itโ€™s something youโ€™d wear and actually like.
  2. are you experiencing any skin issues on your body and trying any products? keep track of the issue and how the products are doing.
  3. if you donโ€™t already have one, brainstorm workout routines and general wellness/fitness goals.
  4. what are your fav body products? what products did you buy, and hate? TRACK THEM!
  5. any detoxes/diets youโ€™re doing should be recorded in this section.
  6. record โ€œbeauty enhancingโ€ foods and drinks here. mine include matcha, lemon water and acv shots.
fashion
  1. outfit planning! take pics of pieces you already have and clip them out. (iโ€™m doing this currently and keeping them all in a little pocket in my binder).
  2. make a moodboard of your personal style(s). how do you want your closet to look? try to see what details, colors, additions are consistent throughout. when shopping, these are what you should keep track of.
  3. print out your signature clothing color palette if you want to have one.
  4. dedicate a page to accessories you have/want, and how youโ€™d style them.
  5. *this can be expensive but the fashion girls will prob love this* go to the fabric store and buy little swatches that you like. take note of what the fabric is and why you like it.
  6. dedicate a page to all your signature details. all the little specific things that scream YOU and NO ONE else! that means do not write pink, girly, etc. here. that is not exclusive to you, hun.
skincare
  1. take a current filter free photo (make it glam! tie your hair up in a ballerina bun and put on some cute earrings) of the state of your skin. if your skin is perfect, iโ€™m jealous and how does it feel to be godโ€™s fav? if not what problems are you experiencing?
  2. log your current skincare routines and how theyโ€™re working.
  3. make a page for your skin type, how it feels when you wake up and how it feels and looks by the end of the day and research tips to deal with your personal skin type.
  4. skincare wishlist! list any products you wanna try and what they are for. sample them from ulta or sephora if itโ€™s possible.
  5. dedicate a page to the skincare ingredients your skin loves the MOST! mine are retinol, bha, and vitamin c.
  6. i have a page for all the extra cute little skincare devices i want. on it thereโ€™s a stainless steel gua sha, an ice pack, facial steamer, and pink foreo.
hair
  1. whatโ€™s your hair type, density, porosity and curl pattern?
  2. write down any hair goals you have. mine is frizz free tailbone length caramel brown hair with honey blonde highlights by the end of this year.
  3. whatโ€™s your signature hairstyle? do you have a signature? brainstorm here.
  4. clip out hairstyle inspo from pinterest and insta and try to recreate all the looks!
  5. what are your fav hair products? i keep track of the best curling creams and leave in conditioners for my hair personally.
  6. take note of any trending products you wanna try.
fragrance
  1. make a moodboard of how you wanna smell. after this, research notes and how they work together.
  2. now track your fav perfumes, your most complimented, etc.
  3. note what fragrances go with what occasion and how they make you feel.
  4. make your perfume wishlist! my fav part!
nails
  1. swatch all your polishes. label them and their finish.
  2. whatโ€™s your signature/go to nail look?
  3. do you have any pics of your fav mani + pedis? print them out and write the details you loved the most.
  4. write down your at home mani and pedi routine and itโ€™s frequency.
  5. write your fav colors and styles to wear on your nails. mine are glittery pink, pale pink, white, cream, french tip and pink frenchie. a hyper girly twist on the classics.
treatments/procedures
  1. take note of any surgeries or procedures you want done and what they do.
  2. anything you leave the house to have done regularly, keep track here.
  3. donโ€™t limit yourself! forget your budget! what are some high maintenance treatments you wanna experience? manifest it.
references
  1. write down the sources of which you find great info for beauty and fashion
  2. keep addresses of your fav salons and spas.
  3. keep business contacts of your fav estheticians, stylists, nail techs, etc.
use my branding yourself guide to assist in your beauty binder! so much inspo and so many good resources! ๐ŸŽ€

โ–ธ Oval Face Shape:

  • Earrings: Oval faces can wear almost any style. Long dangles, hoops, and studs all work well. Avoid overly long earrings that can elongate the face further.
  • Necklaces: Short necklaces, chokers, and collars can complement your balanced proportions.

โ–ธ Round Face Shape:

  • Earrings: Opt for long, dangling earrings or angular shapes like rectangles and trapezoids to add length and define the face.
  • Necklaces: Long necklaces and V-shaped pendants can help elongate your face.

โ–ธ Square Face Shape:

  • Earrings: Choose earrings with curves, such as hoops or rounded designs, to soften your angles. Long drop earrings work well, too.
  • Necklaces: Long necklaces with pendants or shapes that elongate and add curves, like teardrops, are ideal.

โ–ธ Rectangular (Oblong) Face Shape:

  • Earrings: Choose studs, shorter dangles, or chandelier styles to add width and balance your face length.
  • Necklaces: Chokers and shorter necklaces can help shorten the appearance of your face.

โ–ธ Heart Face Shape:

  • Earrings: Look for earrings that are wider at the bottom than the top, like teardrops and chandeliers, to balance the narrow chin.
  • Necklaces: Short necklaces, chokers, or necklaces with a curved shape to balance your chin and draw attention upward.

โ–ธ Diamond Face Shape:

  • Earrings: Choose earrings that are wider than they are long, like studs or short dangles. Teardrop and curved designs work well.

  • Earrings: Opt for earrings that add width to the upper part of your face, like chandeliers, teardrops, or other designs that are wider at the top.
  • Necklaces: Look for necklaces with intricate details or bold designs to draw attention away from the jawline and add balance to your face.

โ–ธ Warm Undertones

Characteristics: Yellow, peachy, or golden undertones. Veins may appear greenish.

Best Metal:

  • Gold: Yellow, rose, and even bronze gold tones work wonderfully with warm undertones. They enhance the natural warmth of your skin.

โ–ธ Cool Undertones

Characteristics: Pink, red, or blue undertones. Veins may appear bluish or purple.

Best Metal:

  • Silver: Sterling silver, white gold, and platinum are ideal for cool undertones. These metals complement the cool hues in your skin.

โ–ธ Neutral Undertones

Characteristics: A mix of both warm and cool undertones. Veins may appear bluish-green.

Best Metal:

  • Gold or Silver: People with neutral undertones have the flexibility to wear both gold and silver. Both metals will complement your skin tone, so you can choose based on your outfit or personal preference.

โ–ธ Olive Undertones

Characteristics: A combination of green and yellow undertones, often giving the skin a slightly greenish cast.

Best Metal:

  • Gold and Silver: Olive undertones can generally wear both gold and silver. However, gold (both yellow and rose) can enhance the warm aspect of olive skin, while silver can bring out cool, greenish hues. Experiment with both to see which you prefer.

โ–ธ Additional Tips:

  • Mixing Metals: Don't be afraid to mix gold and silver. This works especially well if you have neutral or olive undertones.
  • Skin Tone Changes: Your skin tone can change with the seasons (e.g. getting more tanned in summer), so you might find that different metals suit you better at different times of the year.

BLOG UPDATE:

This blog is lowkey a mess ngl, I need to organise it more and the plans I had for it did not fall through because of my academics and it just clashed. I need to write down some ideas so I know what to actually write about when I have the time.

The plans were to focus on things like health and upgrading physical beauty. As you can see I have obviously done an amazing job at maintaining these posts!! (sarcasm for those who don't get it)

If you have any ideas, please write them on my suggestions form. This one is separate from the one on my main blog.

New posts will be written once I have some ideas ready ๐Ÿ’‹ xx

Set behavioral goals! It is such a game changer. Instead of setting goals that you can not 100% control, for example โ€œI want to weigh XXX amountโ€ set behavioral goals such as โ€œI want to exercise for at least 30 min 4 days out of the weekโ€.

You have so much more control over your behavior/actions which means it will be easier to maintain and thus helping potentially reaching your end goal. Focus on creating goals related to behavior change that include action steps!

HOW TO HAVE LEANER AND STRAIGHTER-LOOKING LEGS LIKE A VS MODEL

There is nothing wrong with anyone's body. This is just a personal preference for me that I would like to have straighter and leaner legs as of now!

Stretching can help give your legs a lean and straight look by elongating the muscles and improving flexibility. When you stretch regularly, it helps lengthen your muscles, making them appear longer and leaner.

Here is the video I use for my specific leg stretching on Xiaohongshu:

If you are on a laptop just go to the translating section and change it to English if you want to read what it says. I only did it once with my workouts but doing it twice would probably give you results quicker.

And on YouTube:

Here is the one I do in general:

Work out to tighten and tone the leg muscles without giving it a "bulky" look.

Walking is a great low-impact workout that will tighten the leg muscles. Walk at least 6000+ steps if you can't do 10,000 daily. Any walking is better than no walking though so start with what you can and increase it.

If your looking to lose weight on your legs then you would need to eat in a calorie deficit along with working out. Weight loss is 70% diet and 40% exercise!

Electrolytes.

(Information from online sources)

Electrolytes are minerals that have an electric charge when they are dissolved in water or body fluids, including blood. An electrolyte imbalance occurs when your body's mineral levels are too high or too low. This can negatively affect vital body systems.
Staying hydrated is key to maintaining a balance of electrolytes. Water is the most natural choice for hydration. It is less expensive and more available than any other drink. Coconut water is another alternative for replenishing electrolytes.

Sodium:

  • Balances fluid levels inside and outside cells
  • Regulates blood pressure
  • Helps send nerve signals
  • Helps your muscles contract

Potassium:

  • Helps move nutrients into your cells
  • Helps your nerves and muscles function, especially your heart
  • Supports your metabolism

Calcium:

  • Builds and strengthens your bones and teeth Helps muscles contract and sends nerve signals
  • Aids stable blood pressure

Magnesium:

  • Aids muscle and nerve function
  • Builds and strengthens your bones and teeth

Phosphorous:

  • Builds and strengthens your bones and teeth
  • Aids nerve and muscle function

Chloride:

  • Balances fluids inside and outside cells
  • Regulates blood pressure

Many foods are rich in electrolytes. Some of the top sources include:

Potassium: Bananas, beet greens, salmon, white beans, avocado, potatoes, milk, mushrooms

Sodium: Dill pickles, clams, table salt, cheese, dry-roasted sunflower seeds

Magnesium: Spinach, pumpkin seeds, lima beans, tuna, brown rice, almonds

Phosphorous: Yellowfin tuna, tofu, milk, chicken, scallops, pumpkin seeds, quinoa

Calcium: Milk, cheese, spinach, tofu, yogurt, okra, trout, acorn squash

STRETCH STRETCH STRETCH!

Stretching keeps the muscles flexible, strong, and healthy, and we need that flexibility to maintain a range of motion in the joints. Without it, the muscles shorten and become tight. Then, when you call on the muscles for activity, they are weak and unable to extend all the way. -> HARVARD HEALTH

INNER BENEFITS:

  • Improved Flexibility: Stretching helps increase the range of motion in your joints and muscles, promoting flexibility. This can enhance your ability to perform everyday activities and maintain proper posture.
  • Reduced Muscle Tension and Stiffness: Stretching helps release tension in the muscles, reducing stiffness. This is especially beneficial for individuals who may experience muscle tightness due to prolonged periods of sitting or physical inactivity.
