Queer heroes and villains - A masterpost

This pinned post will contain every meta post I make that involve queerness related to the BNHA manga -can be the fandom, character analysis, mixing multiple topics for different posts, exploring the setting and possibilities, etc.

(Edited as the story continues and I post new content)

pls horikoshi im begging on my knees tell me you want to explore izuku's personal life and internal struggles more in depth and thats why 431 had to be that way but izuku is still the hard headed stubborn hero who has complex emotions and loves active pro heroism WHY IS HIS FACE LIKE THAT WHILE WEARING THE SUIT WHEN HE "just loves teaching so much he would still do it with OFA" GRGRGRGRGRGRGR

(Izuku having an open palm when he says this, like when he let go of OFA, and so unlike his determinate fist AM I WEIRD OR WHAT)

tomboy ochako... masc ochako... butch ochako... transmasc ochako... trans man ochako... save me... where are you...

I've realized there's this epidemic in shonen fandoms where dudebros making up shit about "fujos sent death threats to the author because their yaoi ship didn't become canon", then they get 100k likes on Twitter with also 10k quotes being misogynist towards fujos. BUT when you ask them for proof they don't have any response :)

i feel like the youth should be reminded that the point of shipping is not for a ship to become canon. the point of shipping is to collect all the canon crumbs like starved mice, run away cackling and make some fun little scenarios with them just for the hell of it.

hot take: 431 feels like it focuses on giving Ochako every opportunity to choose if she wants to confess in the future. Its not making them date now, just give Ochako the "courage" to tell him she likes him.

I think thats terrible, but it did not confirm a serious relationship at all -only confirmed their paths had to divert from each other, even when their jobs are pretty similar, only see each other while working as pro heroes, and dont really talk to each other anymore, their last moments togethers being in high school.

can we talk about how izuku can comfort and reaches out towards every person that cries in front of him se they can be honest about their feelings, but struggles with Katsuki? call me an idiot if you want, but him unable to deal with a genuinely sad kacchan, especially a kacchan sad about him, fits pretty well with how he tries to avoid expressing his own feelings even if he accepts them.

my train of thought is:

Katsuki is his closest person, there is no arguing about it + Izuku has a tendency of reflecting his own inner feelings onto other people's emotional moments, while helping them + Izuku is aware of his feelings but prefers to not acknowledge them directly if they get too personal, if theres more Izuku than Deku in them

Because he is his closest person, his cries are completely different from anyone else's; every time he has helped someone before, no matter if they cried or not, we can see a little of his own internal conflicts in his words (one of the first ones would be when he helped Shouto telling him thats his power; he was struggling to reclaim OFA at the time, to use it as his own, but instead of having him directly say this about himself, he says it about Shouto. He did it to genuinely help, but we cant ignore how he has this tendency of letting those details out). In a way, this serves to him accidentally letting them out without losing that saving purpose, expressing them as they also relate to someone else's struggles unrelated to him. 429 also show us this attitude, with him relating to the concept of guilt and expressing some of it thru Ochako's pain; in the end, he always tries to stay optimistic about it, or to say the least, he works on making things peaceful.

However, Katsuki's tears were exclusively about Izuku himself. He couldn't give him his all to stop the tears because he himself was the target of his pain; Izuku couldn't deal with that, not with Katsuki crying over him, nor expressing a selfish desire to keep OFA longer, to grieve the loss.

With Katsuki, it all becomes way too personal for what he can take, because the tears are about his lost dream, and its Kacchan.

until I see a wedding and/or actual explicit love confession and reciprocity, I am not seeing that ship as canon. Im not sorry, we constantly criticize straight shippers for always interpreting vaguely romantic/ambiguous scenarios as canonization of a ship, and yet here we are, considering that ship as real as if they had 6 children already.

The manga ended without a single reference to Izuku liking Ochako romantically -he remembers moments with her? Yes, and considers her important in his life? Also yes. But we already established with these two a couple of things:

  1. To confess feelings, the best option is to do so with your whole face explicitly. Izuku confesses with his whole face that he wants to talk more to her, thats it.
  2. With ochako there is no doubt what the feelings are, while with Izuku we never put a romantic name to them.
  3. Izuku is, as a 25 year old man, a clueless nerd when it comes to feelings others have for him and romance. He is the type to believe grand, explicitly romantic gestures are what constitutes romance. 431 does not show any of that, nor clarified romantic feelings from his part -to believe this is a romantic confession, we have to think Deku is the type of person to confess in an ambiguous way while looking straight to that person and showing his whole face.

Im tired of everyone pretending this is the confirmation of anything!!!! Yes the set up looks romantic, but does that even fit what the characters are actually saying and agreeing to? Do we think anyone would see that handshake as the beautiful moment to canonize a romantic ship? Omg, lets move onnnn I feel insane, am I the only one who thinks is funny how dudebros keep using that tetsu-tetsu and kirishima bro hold as the final confirmation of their goated protagonist being super straight?? Like, if thats the most straight he can be, thats so gay and im a bisexual midoriya stan.

So Crawford won. Elon is, as far as I know, still being investigated for ~election crimes~ in Wisconsin. Canada is still investigating Tesla's alleged fraud with rebates. Illinois just elected a bunch of Democrats for local offices. Louisiana rejected a bunch of Republican proposed changes to their state constitution. Cory Booker held the floor of the Senate for 25 hours, breaking the record of racist shitheel Strom Thurmond and in the process, listing out the sins of the Trump administration in the Senate records and delaying their vote for some other Trump asshole. And Speaker of the House Mike Johnson got embarrassed by House Republicans joining Dems in opposing him and threw a baby hissy fit and shut down the House for a week.

We didn't get Florida. But look at all that up there.

Oh and tomorrow, Tesla has to share information about how many cars it actually delivered in the first three months of the year, which unless they fudge the books, is going to be a lower number than they would like, and might make their stock dip some more. Or just drop. Forbes has provided a little graph of their sales.

Edit: and oh shit! Mike Waltz fucked up again and got caught using fucking Gmail for work discussions. Gmail. Because Google never spied on anyone. (He has a government email address.)

Oh and in Hungary, the people have kept up their protests against Orban's move to ban Pride and, today at least, he basically fled the scene.

The last ask doesn’t make sense considering Izuku is a hero part time and then he invites Katsuki to be a guest lecturer. What part of that is Izuku saying out with the old? It was them finding a balance with each other which is more than what we can say for him and Ochako. Izuku and Katsuki are established to be able to overcome any obstacles that come their way which is reinforced in 431 but people are convinced Izuku is abandoning Katsuki. Izuku and Ochako, on the other hand, can only have a relationship if Izuku is somehow also a hero.

(this isnt about the last ask I answered! its another)

its clear deku wants katsuki still in his life and wants to involve him in his "new passion", we dont need a scene of him running towards him bc they already are part of their lives -he is just involving him even more in his-. While the scene looks romantic, its actually quite sad for anyone who is actually reading it and enjoys deku and ochako as friends/lovers -it confirms they never got closer during nor after school beyond what we already saw, and they just lost contact. Instead of being comfortable with each other like they used to, now its a little weird, and Izuku even gives the opportunity to reject his offer of talking more from now on. He is not out there asking katsuki if he wants to be a special lecturer, he should be

When Ochako is thinking about him before he meets her, shes reflecting on their dynamic and why they just arent as close -they had different paths to go and respected each other, laughed when they could, and she shouldn't feel bad about not talking during the reunion bc they already see each other more. She thinks its already a "luxury" that they were able to talk normally before. She put those feelings away, however she wants to talk more to him still. We get also a flashback to her confessing that feeling to Himiko. And then he appears and says that he also wants to talk to her more!

In the end it doesnt read as him confessing romantic feelings towards her, but Ochako having the opportunity to get closer to him instead of just keep living without doing what she wants to do. Tbh, now that im re reading that chapter, it reads a lot like Izuku towards Katsuki during that scene where he says he is too blessed, with his perspective that anything is good enough when it comes to him.

Could this be a set up to make the one shot revolve around her confessing romantic feelings? Sure it could, but its wild to say 431 confirmed a relationship between them or solidified it -they see each other more but arent close, so its awkward. Himiko's advice to Ochako is living more like she wants to -so I prefer to see it as her being told to also talk to the ppl she wants in her life-.

Fun fact, according to pikahlua her agreeing with him can also be translated as "we get along!", which could be so cute for an interpretation about them wanting to reconnect their friendship, as her saying something like "ofc we can talk more, we'll always get along!".

Its like Ochako and Izuku arent able to even think about rescheduling or involve the other actively in their life until now that Katsuki told him to start showing others how they are special too, instead of just treating everyone the exact same, even tho their jobs are pretty similar and would work together pretty easily as opposed to Katsuki and Izuku's jobs. And in the end, Katsuki didnt need an extra moment of attention bc he has always had that special treatment -if he didnt, AFO wouldnt have targeted him in the first place-.

If Hori wanted Deku and Bakugo to go through all that circus and foreshadowing just so they would leave each other in the end (Bkg ending alone and rejected and Deku thinking his new motivation in life is chasing a woman that he didn't talk much to in years and just being a teacher) then maybe he shouldn't be writing a hero manga at all. Seriously, what hero fan wants that?

Disregarding ships ppl still very much like their dynamic as heroes. It's stupid to assume everyone is "just a fujoshi" when they say they wanted more for the mc. Getting in a relationship with a convenient woman that gets pushed around to act on her feelings until the end is not enough.

I mean I dont think the point was "bkg is alone and miserable and sad over the rejection itself", and more that he worries about Izuku's self perception. The rejection is met with a contemplative sad look because it means he doesnt think highly on himself, which is why he cant see the most obvious things (and Izuku tells him he is also oblivious to what's obvious). And chasing after a woman is generous, it looks more like he saw her from afar and went fast before she got home so he could tell her "everyone is special and I loves and respect everyone, can we talk more??"

But agreed, is totally okay to want more from the MC, tho I dont believe in the canonization at this point.
