I'm late, but since I haven't posted one of these in literal months and I've finally brushed off my WIP again, I figure no one will mind that it's Monday. Here's a bit from the next chapter of my Regency!AU fic Truths Acknowledged:
“What do you mean she said no?” he demands.
Mallory raises an eyebrow and takes another sip of brandy.
“She thinks the plan has merit,” he says after a thoughtful silence, “but she has concerns with it being an official military maneuver. She’s already lost one ship along that coast, and all intelligence points to a larger conflict brewing in the east. You and your ship need to be recovered for that. She also asks me to remind you that you were not meant to be near the Endymion when she sank, and though your heroism saved many lives, it also disabled you and your ship during a time of great need.”
Bond scoffs. “I couldn’t stand by and watch her sink.”
“No,” Mallory agrees. “But now is not the time to be flouting orders. She has her eye on you, and is only half convinced your heroism is worth your… shall we say loose adherence to orders or the chain of command?”
“Superiors rarely complain about my methods,” Bond insists.
“To your face,” Mallory responds with a shrug.

sad reality of the fanfic-to-published work economy is that the weirdest people are willing to do it. that's why there's now hundreds of shitty no plot cishet hate-to-love enemies-to-lovers books that are ex reylo fanfic. and it's not even good. that's because the people who wrote book-quality steve/bucky and kirk/spock fic are too normal to think to themselves "i should get this porn published". they're too busy working in local government offices
everyone I am happy to announce that the stevebucky fanfic author I had in mind while writing this post has officially reblogged it.
This is the point. Good fanfic makes lousy ofic, because if you're taking the shortcuts allowed in good fanfic by relying on the canon your readers know (so you don't BORE them by repeating it), then you aren't doing the character development NEEDED in good ofic. Like, they are different genres. For a reason.
