I like when people like a character so way too much that it transcends even self shipping or kinning and becomes more of a patron saint that you pray to type of deal

I see this post all the time and I'm so confused. Most people throughout history were busier than your average resident of a developed country is now. My primary reaction to reading about the past since I was a child has been "I'm glad I don't live then, I'm too weak for that, I could not do that much work all the time."

In the past things took longer to do but they often required a waiting period. You had to chop wood, put it in your stove, and light it, but it took a few hours for it to get hot enough for baking and then another hour for the bread to fully cook. History books will say things like "It took 4 hours to make a loaf of bread" but they don't mention that you only had to do actual work for a fraction of that time and the rest could be devoted to other tasks or relaxing for a while

Employee workload has doubled or tripled because of modern technology. It makes things faster but also creates less downtime which employers have filled with more responsibilities. You can do more work in a 10 minute period if all the files are on the computer but in the olden days you got to take a short walk to the filing cabinet and let your mind wander while you thumbed through folders, which means a modern 10 minutes of work is more mentally exhausting. The amount of work one employee has to do today used to be split between 2 or 3 people. We lost those moments of downtime we used to get by having to do things the slow way

There was also less artificial stimulation.

I live near two airports and on a busy street. Sounds abound. I need light blocking curtains in my bedroom because the artificial street lights prevent me from sleeping. My electronics hum. So many appliances and devices around me.

There are advertisements EVERYWHERE. And signage. And cars. Flashy bright plastic packaging, designed to catch your attention. Artificial lights, buzzing away. Stores and restaurants pump music and smells outside into the surrounding area to entice customers. Scents are added to most household cleaners, and to lots of things that don't need added smells. Sights and sounds and smells in abundance.

You can be in front of three screens at once in your own home.

Do you just listen to ambient noise when doing chores, or do you put on a podcast? Do you feel the need to fill the silence because the silence feels unnatural? Because you were raised in a world of unrelenting, exhausting stimulation? City mouse thinks the country is too quiet?

Even if I did all the same tasks in a day that my grandmother did when she was my age (cook food, clean house, go to the store, work on a sewing project, listen to music, paint my toenails, read a book if there's free time), my world is filled with so much more STIMULATION than hers was. Everything is LOUDER and BRIGHTER and MORE. No wonder my central nervous system is on high alert.

Diógenes said you couldn’t spit anywhere but in the face of a rich man because once this rich dude invited him into his house and literally told him you can’t spit on anything that touches the floor so Diógenes spit in this guys face

here is a very good painting of Diógenes in his tub that i had the good fortune of actually seeing earlier this year

I love that Diogenes is making a comeback in the twenty-first century.

anger issues are only relatable and hot in certain fictional characters. if you raise your voice at me in real life i will literally crazy murder you

Everything written on “Female autism” is amazing like we just put 293638363836 trillion dollars into our study that concluded women are more often forced to abide by social rules and act palatable than men. Shocking stuff

Fucking wild to be teaching about Rosa Parks at the same time as a trans woman in Florida does an act of civil disobedience to use a women's restroom in the state capitol

As far as I know, she is the first woman arrested bc of this law. The law requires that the trans person be warned to leave the bathroom by a state official, and then if they stay they are guilty of trespassing after a warning.

So like, me, my gf, others just piss and nobody asks or tells, but this young woman sent a statement about the law to over 100 FL lawmakers so they would know she was coming, the cops were ready for her, she brought a reporter and went in anyway and spent the night in a men's jail. She is out on bail, and is hoping this will inspire change of the law. But if found guilty, and the law is upheld as constitutional, then she could spend up to 60 days in a mens county jail.

Wanted to include her letter to Florida lawmakers, since i found it quite powerful.

Transcript:

“Hi, my name is Marcy Rheintgen. I'm a twenty year old college student, and I'm writing this letter to tell you that I am going to break the law. On March 19th, at around 3 pm, I intend to use the women's bathroom on the second floor of the Capitol building, across from room 222C. I know that as a transgender woman, this means I will probably be arrested. I am violating this law because I personally believe it to be wrong. I don't work for or am associated with any major political or media organization, I'm not a political activist, I'm not an influencer, I'm just a normal college student who thinks this law is wrong. Enclosed is a photo of me to identify me if you wish to arrest me. I understand that I could go to jail for up to 60 days in a men's prison where, if the statistics are true, I would likely be raped. Going to jail would uproot my life and give me a criminal record. I understand that if you're receiving this letter, you're part of the Florida Bicameral Legislature, which means you're probably one of the people who wrote this law or voted for it. I know that you know in your heart that this law is wrong and unjust. I know that you know in your heart that it's wrong to arrest me and jail me for sixty days for simply using the bathroom. I know that you know in your heart that transgender people are human too, and that you can't arrest us away. I know that you know in your heart that transgender people are no different from you or anybody else. I know that you know in your heart that the same people that go to church with you, eat in the same restaurants, go to the same schools, root for the same sports teams, watch the same movies and pray to the same God as you cannot be all bad. I know that you know that I have dignity. That's why I know that you won't arrest me.

Pray for me,

Marcy Rheintgen”
