state of the system, edit 2024/9/04

There's been a LOT of additions to the system, over the past few months! A mix of stress, and developments in our comfort being ourselves due to internal work.

2024 really seems to be the Year of the Fictive for us. Welcome, Harley and Scarlet!

***: Aidel is a fictive but felt anxious about using the name she had in her source media since this body is of European/Mediterranean Jewish ancestry and she's from an anime/manga/LN franchise. She showed up completely unexpectedly on December 2, 2022.

a lot of people could stand to start viewing the nakba and the holocaust as a continuum rather than as competitive binaries

🇺🇸tony's chocolonely chocolate bar recall due to rocks🇺🇸

literally, due to rocks. they got rocks in them

april 2, 2025

Tony’s Chocolonely Inc., a New York, New York Corporation, is voluntarily recalling seven lots of Tony’s brand Dark Almond Sea Salt Bar (6.35oz); and Everything Bar (6.35oz) because the product may contain small stones. The products were distributed nationwide and sold in the United States via retail stores and www.tonyschocolonely.com; distribution of the products began February 7, 2025 and ended March 24, 2025.

emphasis mine.

this recall only affects some lots of the dark almond sea salt bar and the everything bar, due to the rock problem. they were distributed nationwide in stores and on the internet. I included their pictures at the top.

I am not able to format a table for tumblr, so check that recall link for the specific lot codes and expiration dates.

The recall was initiated following 12 reports of consumers finding small stones in the product not filtered during third-party almond harvesting and the almond processing process. All complaints occurred outside of the United States and Canada, and no injuries were reported.

they found rocks after there were 12 reports that said hey. there are rocks in this. this can easily lead to dental problems if someone tries to bite full force on a rock and breaks a tooth or otherwise injures their mouth. dental infections can eventually become life-threatening even in people who are young and otherwise healthy. so it is a good thing nobody apparently ate the rocks yet. or at least, nobody got injured while potentially eating rocks. yet

If you have purchased one of the affected products with the specified lot codes and have not yet consumed it, you are advised not to eat the product. Please return the product to the store of purchase for a refund or replacement or dispose of the product. Please consult the following webpage to confirm how to identify the lot code and claim a refund or replacement in your market: https://us.tonyschocolonely.com/pages/recall-fo-intl-0325

emphasis mine.

please do not the rocks. thank you

UM GUYS. I JUST NOTICED A CRAZY ISSUE W THE TUMBLR UPDATE.

YOU CAN SEE THE ICONS OF ANONS SOMETIMES.

The way I was able to recognize several anons in one of my inboxes bc of this error. Oh my god. Guys. This isn’t supposed to happen.

Weighing in to say:

YES, I SEE THIS ON MOBILE. HOWEVER I DO **NOT** THINK IT'S SHOWING THE ANON'S REAL IDENTITY.

The profile pictures I see next to anon asks are profile pictures that belong to other, non-anon asks in my ask box also. Some info

  • there are 14 asks in my inbox from the last ~5 days
  • 9 anons, 5 logged in users
  • ALL 14 show pfps, including the 9 anons
  • ALL THE SHOWN PROFILE PICTURES BELONG TO THE 5 LOGGED IN USERS

I think the bug is the inbox INCORRECTLY attributing anons to neighboring, logged-in asks.

Which is still a bad bug! Considering it makes it look like a long-time follower of mine sent me a spam ask.

And is worse if, say, one of these was anon hate.

But it's NOT the anon's real identity. It's a neighboring ask asker's identity

So if you have anon hate in your inbox that looks like it's attributed to your dear friend, who sends you lovely asks all the time, it was Not them.

CONFIRMED THE BUG IS INCORRECT ATTRIBUTION.

Thanks @thepatchycat for being a test subject. As you can see the icon being attributed to this ask is NOT the patchy cat

The pictured icon belongs to @watchingforcomets who sent me a nice ask about nail polish yesterday which I have not yet answered!

This is a good reason to have scientific studies saying stuff like, "On average, trans people report happiness when they transition with loving family support and unhappiness when people dump acid on their head," like, yes it is intuitive, yes we knew that, but someday the study that is being passed around under the heading "water is wet," is going to be used to guide a court decision. And sometimes, when the the weather is fair and God smiles, it will result in some judge pounding the anti-trans arguments absolutely flat with a level of precise violence heretofore only seen in people making schnitzels, and that is a thing of beauty.

It looks like today is going to be a night of checking up with my friends to see which ones of them are now unemployed… Tumblr seems to have been hit hard

It looks like developers, both web and mobile, are the biggest group in the 280 people laid off

After publication, we began hearing more about which orgs were impacted from various sources. According to at least one source, just north of 100 were from WooCommerce. We’ve also heard Tumblr, Day One, and the AI orgs were impacted. In the U.S., layoffs spanned roles, including account execs, marketing, product (management and design), sales, community, business operations, and more. The default severance package is just 9 weeks.

I assigned a writing prompt a few weeks ago that asked my students to reflect on a time when someone believed in them or when they believed in someone else. One of my students began to panic.

“I have to ask Google the prompt to get some ideas if I can’t just use AI,” she pleaded and then began typing into the search box on her screen, “A time when someone believed in you.”

“It’s about you,” I told her. “You’ve got your life experiences inside of your own mind.” It hadn’t occurred to her — even with my gentle reminder — to look within her own imagination to generate ideas. One of the reasons why I assigned the prompt is because learning to think for herself now, in high school, will help her build confidence and think through more complicated problems as she gets older — even when she’s no longer in a classroom situation.

She’s only in ninth grade, yet she’s already become accustomed to outsourcing her own mind to digital technologies, and it frightens me.

When I teach students how to write, I’m also teaching them how to think. Through fits and starts (a process that can be both frustrating and rewarding), high school English teachers like me help students get to know themselves better when they use language to figure out what they think and how they feel.

. . .

If you believe, as I do, that writing is thinking — and thinking is everything — things aren’t looking too good for our students or for the educators trying to teach them. In addition to teaching high school, I’m also a college instructor, and I see this behavior in my older students as well.

This! This is what scares me the most about AI! Physical exertion is difficult if someone isn't used to it, and it gets easier the more often it's done. When it's done often enough, it becomes a habit. Mental exertion is exactly the same. Thinking is a learned skill just like a sport is, and an entire generation is growing up without that most critical skill.

An unthinking populace is a more easily controlled populace.

HEY, FELLOW HATERS OF INSANELY-BRIGHT CAR HEADLIGHTS, SOMEONE HAS STARTED A PETITION TO REGULATE THEM.

It's an official petition through the Australian Government's e-petition page, which means if it gets enough signatures, it will be tabled in government.

You do have to be an Australian citizen to sign it, BUT!!! PLEASE REBLOG THIS EVEN IF YOURE NOT, because these kind of things have a roll-on effect, and if Australia legislates LED headlights, then other countries may follow.

FYI, the petition asks only for your name and email, and once you've clicked the sign button, they'll send you an email to confirm your signature --- you need to click the confirmation link in the email to have your signature counted.

Hello, all!!

I'm working with @fandomsforpali to raise money for Wijdan's GoFundMe! For every $10 donated, if you fill out this form you can be entered in a raffle to win an illustration, or even a comic, by me! Four winners will be chosen — three illustrations and one comic. Check out the form for more information!

(Also, check out the @fandomsforpali blog and their carrd for other artists and authors you can commission via donation!)

if you’re not someone who picks up dead marine mammals you might be surprised how hands-on random citizens are about trying to assist the picking up of dead marine mammals.

every time I go on a call to a dead seal to collect it for a necropsy, god forbid a passerby sees me because they will walk up to me no hesitation

while i’m dressed like hannibal about to commit a murder and also in an N95 mask and they’ll be like “here let me help” and just reach for this dead animal and when I have to shout “STOP” they look so shocked and even offended every time.

like they think my outfit is just for fun

Ooh, out of curiosity, what ARE the potential hazards? I don't typically touch dead wild animals as it is, but I'm curious for the marine-specific concerns, if you feel like sharing.

Of course! The hazard here is Zoonotic disease. While an epizootic disease refers to a disease impacting animal populations, Zoonotic diseases, or zoonoses, are transmissible between humans and animals—meaning humans and animals can infect each other.

You can end up with any number of infections by handling dead or injured marine mammals.

‘Seal Finger’ is one example, a serious infection you can contract by touching & handling seals (even dead seals!) or being bitten by one (even injured seals bite!) (source)

Seal Finger infections often impact patients’ hands—hence its name—but it’s not limited to hands. Seal Finger actually refers to infections caused by multiple, unique pathogens. It responds well to prompt diagnosis & treatment, but left untreated it can result in amputation or worse.

Marine mammals can also spread Leptospirosis to humans and all of the symptoms that come with it, as well as Brucellosis and Giardia. Many of these can also be transmitted to our pets, which is one reason to keep your cats indoors and your dogs on leashes at the beach (source)

Multiple strains of HPAI—Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (aka Bird Flu)—have been detected in seal populations over the years, including the most recent strain of concern, H5N1. Luckily, Avian Influenza transmission from marine mammals to humans is extremely rare (source) (source) (source) (source)

Some of these infections are less common and harder to contract than others, but that doesn’t mean you should take your chances.

If you spend any time by the coast, look up the contact information for your local marine mammal stranding & rescue network and save it in your phone so you have it if you need it. Don’t approach an ill, injured, or dead animal on your own, and keep your pets clear.

When it comes to living marine mammals, keep a healthy distance to protect them as well—at least 100 yards on land. Generally we say that if marine mammals like seals are focused on you, lifting their heads to watch you, you’re too close already! You should do what you can to avoid disturbing marine mammals at all. Obviously that’s not always possible, but it’s good to try your best! Thanks for asking!

Some trans girls act like they've never had the experience of being in a high school men's locker room. Like, for the record - it's an awful experience and I hope no girl has to go through it, but like. Have you seriously not seen the way men act behind closed doors when they think there's no women around?

So, I know objectively this happens. I know enough other people who I trust who have had that experience.

But I haven't. That's what happens when the "other boys" and even the teachers see you as queer and disabled. I was the crazy faggot retard that got excluded from things, whether by school policy due to being in a special ed program or simply by being excluded by supported peers. During the two years of junior high when I was at a school where I did have opportunities to enter a locker room, I wound up hiding in corners or waiting for everyone else to be done, because being in earshot or line of sight in there meant getting beaten up. High school meant being shipped off to the last chance before being fully institutionalized, because having any reaction to being bullied meant I was a Problem.

So, no. I never had that experience. In K-12 I was excluded, and afterwards I kept to spaces that made it unlikely I'd be exposed to that kind of talk, or where people already knew I wasn't cis.

Because of that, there are still times that I'm shocked and dismayed at how many cis straight men act and think about women, especially when I read things that they wrote with the belief that only other men would care to look. I know on an intellectual level that these attitudes are present, but I didn't have the direct experiences that would have led to me internalizing them.

There are ways that you can not go through this and it's just as bad.

Also remember that letting people cover their faces in public did not lead to everyone getting robbed

And also remember that letting people work from home, and attend virtual concerts, and go to meetings via zoom, and go to conferences virtually, and go to religious services virtually, and go to all kinds of other events virtually and thus, allowing for disabled and chronically ill folks to participate in society like never before…

But now, folks want to take so many of those options away all over again…isolating disabled and chronically ill folks from society again. It’s cruel…taking something beautiful like that away from us after showing us that something like that was possible this whole time since we have had the technology. And now that we know for a fact that the technology exists, non-disabled and non-chronically ill people want to take that away from us?

It’s beyond cruel.

If you’ve never been house bound or bed bound for months or years on end like I have? Or like others like me have? Then you have no idea what this feels like. None.

Being sensitive to changes in barometric pressure is crazy what do you mean my problem is that the wind changed direction. What do you mean it's the fuckin clouds

Something I think people who don’t live with chronic illness don’t understand is that there is a big difference between resting to get better and resting to avoid getting worse.

Say you break your ankle. You could know everything there is to know intellectually about the injury. Even with this vast knowledge, you will still experience physical pain.

Now take this logic and apply it to things like ADHD, autism, clinical depression, and other less visible/divergent disabilities. You cannot think your way out of feeling.

That is to say: you are not a bad, lazy, or selfish person for struggling, even if you know why you are struggling.
