#YEAH#im pretty sure this is literally the last known living status of these two pre-New 52#steph#cass#stephcass#now i kiiiinda want a slowburn stephcass story where the two somehow end up living together when theyโre younger superheroes#and steph acts all domestic like this for the fun of it and personal amusement#until one day she realises that shes much more sincere about it than she originally planned#steph to herself: haha maybe this time Iโll ask for a goodbye kiss when I go out to work. Man I hope she gives me one. Wait what.#basically a roommates auย (@2ndbluebird)
I need this!!!
Space Jamโข but literally
There isnโt really a place that I can see filling my Tumblr need. I get it sort of with TikTok but not really
"if tumblr dies you can find me on bluesky" "if tumblr dies you can find me on Instagram" if tumblr dies you cannot find me. It's over. I'm free.
Like how boring is it for them to be like "from childhood Jason was born to be Reckless and Homicidal" and then in current canon he's just some guy who hangs out with the bats and doesn't kill or use guns or have a significant difference of opinion with any of them? So we remove the actual tragedy of Jason's death, or remove the tragedy from Jason's hands, since yknow the only thing that matters is that Bruce failed to "save" him from himself, and then Jason is not even a character with significant negative presence anymore. What is the point of any of it? I mean that sincerely, like... who gives a shit, then? If you can be evil from childhood and fated to die because you're poor and mean, and then immortalized in a more important character's story as the Mean and Bad Failure, and then you just get reduced to a vaguely bad-boy character who is as willing to cooperate and be obedient as everyone else (and in that I mean roughly as disobedient as everyone else, too, not significantly different in how often he argues or what opinions he argues with), then what . Is the Point. Of the Story.
Star Sapphire Jason... yup, that's it.
The thing about Barbara Gordon is that she cares about people a lot but is also of the mind that only she can keep them truly safe. And if she has to pick between people hating her and her friends being dead, well...
She'd rather be angry than upset.
Cassandra Cain Timeline
Putting this together just to get it out of my head. Going to try and push everything together to get a consistent age for me to use. So starting off:
0 to 8 years old: Cass is born and trains with Cain until she kills for the first time
8 to 16/17 years old: Wanders the world alone until coming to Gotham.
16 years old: Barbara states in the NML audio book that Cass can't be older than 16 but she could just be short and malnourished. DC wiki says she entered Gotham at 17 but I think they're pulling that from batgirl issue 1 SO. 16 during the beginning of NML to me and turns 17 before the start of her Batgirl run
17 years old: The first 25 issues of her Batgirl run and everything that happens in other batbooks between those issues. She fights Shiva after a year, so by the time she fights Shiva to the death we know she's definitely 18.
18 years old: Fights Shiva, dies, makes friends with Steph, loses Steph, moves to Bludhaven, tracks down Shiva again, dies again, Bludhaven gets nuked, kills Shiva, returns to Gotham. A busy year for her!
19 years old: Gets drugged by Slade and forced to become evil. Very traumatising but painfully ooc time for everyone. Gets freed, tracks down Cain and Slade but ultimately decides not to kill them, Bruce adopts her, then dies and tells her to give Batgirl to Steph. Moves to Hong Kong and becomes Black Bat for a while, then returns to Gotham and works with Batman Dick and Robin Damian for Gates of Gotham. An eventful and even worse year than last! But don't worry it gets worse.
20 years old: Erased from existence. Appears once in batgirl futures end and once in convergence batgirl. I'm putting her at 20 for both of these because I feel like it. A nothingburger of a year, I'm using Damian's time as an 11 year old to track how long this lasts because Cass was in "too cool for Dan Didio" purgatory.
21 years old/16 years old: Technically 16 during batman and robin eternal but the new 52 was stupid and they've all gotten their real memories and ages back so to Cass she would have basically been an amnesiac, de aged 21 year old during the new 52. Again using Damian's age to track hers since everyone else's was all over the place during this era.
22 years old: Rebirth era. Damian turned 13 in teen titans during rebirth so I'm putting Cass at 22 during all of this.
23 years old: Damian turned 14 during his Robin run so batgirls Cass was technically 23. Does she act like it? Not at all. But they can't take this from me.
24 years old: Damian is now 15 during the new Batman and Robin run. Cass is confirmed to be in her early/mid 20s in her current run.
25 years old: She recently had her birthday so she could be 25 now, which would put Dick in his 30s and Bruce in his 50s. Hilarious, perfect, no notes. She's 25 to me and will stay that way even after Damian inevitably turns 16 because I've decided she has her birthday first. Also it's 25 years since her Batgirl run came out so it just feels right to me.
The Babs and Steph Oracle and Batgirl era was so fascinating in a way like you are in college, your mom is finally doing well and your relationship with her is improving. Then your best friend/situationship dumps Batgirl in your lap and leaves the country. You're not happy with this. Her own mom figure is not happy with this. She ends up mentoring you anyways. You actually start to form a bond. One of the smartest people in the world is now helping you fight crime and probably giving college advice too. You went from the most horrific high school experience possible including torture and literal death to having two adults you can actually sort of trust to have your back and a relatively happy daily life as a vigilante. And it only happened once you reached adulthood yourself. Never when you needed it most as a vulnerable child/teen without a single solid parental figure to rely on.
Like its wonderful that Steph got all that. She deserved it. But you can't tell me there wasn't a part of her that looked at Crystal and Babs sometimes and wondered: Why not sooner? Why did every adult in her life let her down back when she was actually a child and their responsibility? Is it the fact that Bruce is dead? That Cass is gone and both Steph and Babs are trying to fill that space in their lives? Why did it fucking take so long for anyone to notice that this kid needed help she wasn't getting, to the point she isn't even a kid anymore when it finally arrives?
before starting this i actually said โwow its been a while since ive drawn jason, i should do a jason sketch pageโ and it somehow turned into this. maybe hell get his sketch page soon
robin 3.5 my beloved <3
two bad bitches having very different mental breaks. ignore that change in art style I came back like ages later for the second one lol
ship art of stephcass not dick/jason I just like funny misunderstandings.
For so much of their early relationship whenever Barbara is insensitive to her Cass generally responds by playing it off as if it doesn't bother her to spare Barbara's feelings. She knows Babs only means well and she's a big girl, she's willing to just let it roll right off her and try to see the best in it.
It really is this one outburst that changed things between them. It was the watershed moment that, for Cass at least, made it very clear how Barbara really felt about her.
I think this is the moment that made Cass realize it wasn't just words and it wasn't just misguided. Barbara really does on some level see her as lesser because of the way she is. She can't just shrug off the hurtful things Barbara says about her anymore because now Cass knows that she means them and that makes them cut right down to the bone.
Their relationship can never be the same again after that. Barbara to her credit tries so hard and eventually things get better between them but that damage is already done and now it will always be there.
I am so hurt by them.
After the events of spirit world, xanthe taught Cass how to fold joss paper into all sorts of stuff. Now in her room in Wayne manor Cass has a drawer filled with blank joss paper and regularly folds her own little trinkets and offers them to various spirits. She's been trying to teach xanthe how to throw batarangs by folding them out of joss paper and giving them to xanthe.
Xanthe appreciates it but doesn't quite know how to break it to Cass that they simply just prefer the giant fuck off sword.
