The Lake Beckons

For @invisobang 2024

Flynn has lived on the edge of this lake for as long as he can remember. And for just as long he's been trying to make sure no one else ends up like him or the ghosts he calls his siblings. Unfortunately for him, the teenager that keeps knocking on his door seems to have the wrong idea about things and it's only a matter of time the Lake gets him too.

Read the phic here: ao3 Listen to the song here: bandcamp | spotify

Thank you @kinglazrus, for heading Invisobang, and putting so much work into making it such a phun event! And thank you, @strawberrycamel and @underforeversgrace, for all the work you guys put into helping run the event! Y'all are amazing, and you make this event amazing!

And thank you, Bee, for writing such a phenomenal phic! You write creeping horror incredibly well, and I adore how you weave it into everything about the story - the characters, their surroundings, the narrative, the style, everything! I love how you characterize Flynn in particular, and how he relates to his situation, and how he relates to Danny! It's so well done, and so well crafted!

I hope the music does your work justice!

Passage from Chapter 1 under the cut:

So this has been stuck in my head ever since I heard it three days ago.

this is the polar opposite of Everybody Knows Shits Fucked

i didn’t know this til i looked up the video on youtube, but this dude is a super cool and accomplished musician! his name is Rushad Eggleston–wikipedia describes him as “an innovative musician who has changed the way the cello is played,“ but according to his personal website he’s a “cello goblin & otherworldly jester currently touring earth”

This is a man who knows what he’s about.

Thank you @lokiitama for the tag! 💚

Writing game: Post the last line that you wrote and tag someone for every word in the line.

My current document is a mess lol I think this was the last one I edited at least, so it might be the last I wrote:

The dead phone in his pocket felt so heavy with questions and even heavier with conclusions that put one elusive medium at the center of it all.

Feel free to ignore the tag, but if you're inclined to share your last written line, I choose you: @ghostly-penumbra @sapphireswimming @roundaboutnow @akela-nakamura @thewritingowl @tourettesdog @seaglass-skies @agentianlegend @deathcomes4u @murphy-kitt @finemeal @littlestartopaz @little-dreams-of-life @five-rivers (and the first 10 people who see this and want to do it because 1) I can't count and 2) I don't want to tag too many ^^)

I am a lazy bitch so I'm chaining my tag as a reblog lol

Last thing from the most recent fic I'm writing who's main audience is @dullgecko lol:

Riz fought the choking despair trying to claw its way out of him.

Fic is up on AO3 currently in progress - https://archiveofourown.org/works/63836083/chapters/163878307#workskin

Last thing I wrote is for a Murderbot fic. Just haven't been feeling DP stuff recently.

"Why can't we just toss it in a recycler?"

Last thing I wrote was a drabble of complete and total crack for Baldur's Gate. XXD

Gale likes ass, too <3

The answer is 1, why is everyone a delinquent?

Y'all please, learn your pemdas (or bodmas or whatever you learned it as)

It's 16

*sigh*

Parentheses equation is 2+2, which is 4.

Now we multiply by 2 to get 4x2 which is 8

8 DIVIDED BY 8 is 1.

I have no fucking clue how you can get 16 out of this. I don’t think you’re bad at math, I think you just need glasses.

It’s 1.

It’s 16.

8 / 2 * (2+2) =

8/2 * (4) =

4*4 = 16

You do the parentheses, then you go left to right.

That isn’t how this works.....

PEMDAS

8/2*(2+2) (P = Parentheses)

8/2*(4) (M = Multiply)

8/8=1 (D = Division)

Use Mathpapa calculator if you still don’t believe me.

No, Riley.

M isn't in the original problem but 8÷2 still needs a resolution. You have to solve 8÷2 as-is after (2+2) no matter what.

So you're not following PEMDAS by factoring x4 into 8÷2.

It's literally this simple.

I, uh, I think it’s 1, actually.

Plug it into a searchbar, or a scientific calculator that waits until the whole thing is input & that's the answer.

Everyone on this post:

@nonanalogue can you solve this for us because I swear to goodness the answer is 1 but this post is making me doubt my brains

Happily!

So the problem is two-fold: first, order of operations as most people are taught it is a lie, and second, the original problem is written very ambiguously.

Let’s drill down into that first point.

PEMDAS! Parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction. Everyone’s taught to do operations in that order! Except that’s not really right. As a math teacher of mine put it, “it works for now, but you’ll find out I was lying in a few years.”

The problem is that multiplication and division are the same operation, and addition and subtraction are also the same operation. Division is really just multiplying by a fraction, and subtraction is just adding a negative. With that in mind, it doesn’t necessarily make sense to do some multiplication arbitrarily early in the problem before the rest! As a result, here’s the bottom line for that point:

Both 1 and 16 are right.

How can that be?

Well, that brings me to the second point: the expression is written very ambiguously, so as to maximize confusion! It’s also why I don’t like using the division symbol when a fraction will do just nicely.

Observe two other ways we could write this expression:

The first one resolves to 8/8, which is 1. The second resolves to 4(4), which is 16. Both are right, only because the original expression is vague.

The sad thing is that everyone hates fractions, when actually they make life so much nicer!

Y’ever read something and have understanding that has eluded you interminably suddenly stop, curl up, and snuggle neatly into a fold in your brain because a new way way opened to it?

I've seen this passed around a few times, and I have one thing to say:

It's online. The book was carefully and wonderfully recreated online by hand. You can find it here. The entire book is this easy.

Clockwork adopts a cat. Not a ghost cat, mind you- a living, breathing cat that needs food and water you can't get in the Ghost Zone.

Hopefully the Observants don't find out about this.

Her life is/was/will be a moment. A single heartbeat, a single breath, a single thread in the vast tapestry of time. Utterly insignificant against the backdrop of the infinite cosmos.

He has seen her Birth, and her Death. Her trials and her joys. A kaleidoscope of moments, snapshots scattered across a shining screen.

He has no reason to care for such a thing. Such a small creature, built for hunting but wielding claws smaller than his smallest fingernail. A creature incapable of conceiving of the countless minutes seconds hours of its own life, let alone the great expanse of eternity to which Clockwork can bear witness at a whim.

He's named her Lavender Tea.

She may not be capable of understanding the past nor the future, the infinite possibilities, the multitudes of timelines he watches over, but she has a very strong connection to the present, to the here and now. The present may be fleeting, changing constantly in a mad tumble ever forward, but she relishes in that single moment as it happens, content to simply be. She may be but a speck in the grand scheme of things, but when she sits on his lap and purrs, she becomes the point around which all else pivots.

Of course, she is not without some sense of time.

She rubs against him, twining her tail with his, mewling pathetically for his attention.

"My dear, you know you're early," he chides.

She merely blinks at him, slowly, expectantly, from next to her food dish. Exactly ten minutes early, as always. As if he would forget if she did not remind him.

He may be the Master of Time, but Lavender Tea was the Master of Mealtime.

Only the Dairy King and Maddie have seen him in this state. The King feels sympathy and great guilt towards Vlad. He considers himself the root of his nephew's problem. And yes, he has made many wrong decisions in his life, including towards his nephew. BUT he takes on too much.

Wow, I didn't expect such feedback. Thanks everyone 🫶

I keep thinking about how to best present the information. I'll probably finish the fan fiction and illustrate some moments
