Help a poor anon who keeps seeing a lot of stuff about a wizard story but has no idea how to find it.

Wizard Story is being written as a very long twitter thread with audience participation and you can find the start of it here.

It’s a story about an Enchanter and a Wizard who must help each other save the life of a young princess who will die of a curse in 3 days. They must discover who cursed her and why, keep the political tensions between the royal family and a visiting (terrifying) elven king from devolving into bloodshed, while navigating the tension of the Enchanter and Wizard’s mysterious past together, and the pain of their old and new wounds.

It’s a fantasy second chance love story with several ongoing mysteries. It’s quite ambitious and I’ve never studied mystery writing, but I’m having fun with it. I plan on using it as a first draft of a novel. I know how it ends and I’m writing more of it every day.

If you don’t know how to use Twitter, when you get to the end of the line and don’t see any more of the story, click the last tweet. The thread of tweets keeps going for Iike 300 tweets, you just keep clicking on the last one to keep showing them.

Every time someone complain about how "this choice is not moral, if you chose it/did this in this videogame you are a terrible person!" my mind plays this on repeat

they should invent an existence where the sweetest, most thoughtful people you've ever met don't suffer an endless series of indignities and injuries at the hands of gormless, self-obsessed monsters

tbh shoutout to the over 40s on tumblr, sorry the internet acts like yall belong in the retirement home when ur literally just regular adults with hobbies

I was going to leave comments in the tags, but I decided this was important enough to put on main.

In college, my friend group collectively got into the SCA - Society for Creative Anachronism. They're the people who get really into medieval reenactment, the fighting and crafts and cooking, they have kings and queens and knights and events and a good percentage of them (but not all!) work or have worked at Ren Faires.

I am forever grateful my friends dragged me into that, because it was my first introduction to fandom in older adults. Middle-aged dorks. Elderly nerds. Absolutely as intense and weird and hilarious and fun as any fan in their teens or 20s. I started getting into fandom already knowing there was a road ahead for me as I got older, full of handmade costumes and late night movies and shelves of pewter dragon goblets and mixed-aged road trips to meet ups and conventions.

And it kills me that so many people don't know that sort of community even exists. On both sides, even! I went to Philcon a few years ago, which tends towards older fans, and an older woman I was talking to sadly told me that she thought fandom was dying out, because she never saw younger fans any more.

Over the past decade, there's been a really toxic movement towards keeping different ages strictly separated, both in and outside of fandom. There's this strong implication that if an older person wants to interact with a younger person, there is something inherently predatory about that.

Yeah, that attitude sucks. That drive towards separation and puritanism sucks. Declaring that younger people should have nothing to look forward to and that older people should stay separated and lonely sucks. It sucks and we are all worse for it.

Don't fear age. Don't put an age limit on having fun. Give yourself a damn future.

Everyone should look up their local SCA group and go to it... they usually meet to whack each other with swords every week and they will probably teach you how to broadsword sword fight and rapier sword fight for free. They're just huge nerds with passion about history and a passion about whacking each other with swords.

(source, my brother and I showed up to the local whack-each-other-with-swords meeting and were instantly handed borrowed swords and given a sword fighting class for free)

They also give classes on other things too, like any craft that was done pre-1600, they'll probably do a class on how to do that craft in a historically accurate way. Like wool spinning, and mead brewing and hand sewing and calligraphy and basically any craft you can think of, as long as it was done in medieval times. And you can do research about how to do a craft in a historically accurate way and offer to teach what you learned to everyone. It's genuinely one of the most interesting clubs you can join.

sorry but i have to laugh when i remember how the main problem in trespasser was "omg solas has spies in the inquisition should we disband and do it the safer way or risk it but have more resources" only for datv to go "spies? what spies? every single modern elf hates fen'harel none of them would ever even think of working for him!"

[spoilers] I was gonna write this in the tags but didn't wanna spoil anyone since I do have moots I've successfully annoyed them into playing FFXIV - BUT I just wanted to say, I actually found the Elpis reunion scene to be way more romantic than the solavellan ending. Solavellan is my OTP of all time but I can't help but feel like we were done dirty by Bioware with the crumb we did get.

The zoomed in eye contact with Hades/WOL at the Elpis lobby? When Neath Dark Waters plays again in the background?? DEEPLY ROMANTIC.

FFXIV SPOILERS

I was actually asked right before DA4 came out "which is more romantic, Solavellan or whatever Emet-Selch's deal is" and I said "well, obviously Solas because there's kissing" I think because I was hoping it would have a lot of stuff in DA4 so there WOULD be no comparison

but after everything, I actually change my answer. It's weird to say, but kissing is so good, but there are so many more important things in fictional romance than kissing. Like good and complete and consistent character writing. Getting to know characters to their very core and in extreme situations. Like the amount of time the characters get to spend on the screen. Like truly deep and affecting subtlety that catches your breath and makes you want to scream and cry. Like the characters' actions being loving and not just their words. Like everything coming full-circle. Like not switching protagonists 50% of the way through an unfinished love story, and getting to see the entire love story from one unbroken perspective the entire way through from beginning to end. Like, these are just a few of the important things that are different between the games.

I feel like DAI had all of these, especially the subtlety and the character consistency, but then DA4 came, gave them maybe 5 more minutes of content, and made everything extremely inconsistent. Meanwhile, Endwalker came out, gave you two hours more EmetWol content and elaborated the relationship SO much, revealed many more layers to it, kept things subtle and consistent, and allowed the characters to actually perform loving actions for each other, with very beautiful and subtly sadly romantic lines, and with the added helpfulness of Hythlodaeus making everything as explicit as you possibly could be in an MMO... so comparing DA4 to Endwalker is just almost laughable from a romance standpoint. I think that EmetWol has like... 2x the screen time over the entire story? It's actually extremely nutty. I think it also helps that Emet-Selch has the kind of personality where he would absolutely refuse to be overly romantic on screen, so even if you had him in a BioWare game, his romance would be exactly the same as it would be in the MMO, so you feel like you aren't missing anything. He's just Like That. That's his personality. He HAS to have a subtle romance.

I think it helps make Emet's story feel more romantic because you can view Emet's entire story AS a grand love story, whereas at the end of DA4 you're like "ok so Solas was like not actually motivated by romantic love...? And if he was, it was really love to someone else entirely?" Like Emet is just more consistent, AND they were smart enough to make it feel like it was all just you and nobody else, baby. You are the ghost that haunts his past and present, and you don't have to feel like you aren't important. You're it.

I wrote an unhinged bullet point list comparing just Solas' last scene to Emet-Selch's last scene and why I think one was more successful than the other, and why maybe playing one after having already played the other didn't do it any favors, and I have nowhere to put it so I'll put it here behind a cut

EXTREME spoilers for FFXIV and DA, because I'm talking about the last scenes these characters appear in their stories.

this whole idea in both the fandom and the games themselves that being a people attached to their past & a lost civilization is a failing whereas a celebration of the present is something to strive for wrt elven & dwarven culture is something that reads as fundamentally western & liberal to me.
