As Requested: Shortened Tutorial for Setting Body Paint so it STAYS!!
A shortened version of my original tutorial on setting your body paint, especially for cosplay! This will really help stop your body paints from coming off on your clothes, props, and anywhere else you don't want it! I'm sorry the og was so long, I was very new to making tutorials and talked way too much. Hopefully this fits your needs!

Got a lot of questions about how I made @vrronica-sawyer's Meryl Stryfe cape, so I tried my hand at making a cosplay pattern for it! It's available for $5 on my kofi shop โก
I've been seeing more and more tutorials out there that really boil down to less 'teaching' and more ' sped up b-roll footage of a construction process that assumes the audience already knows how to make the thing'. While these videos are definitely fun to watch, they aren't really teaching anyone anything.
So, I decided to do a tutorial about how to structure tutorials like lesson plans, with some pedagogy behind it! This is mostly aimed at written tutorials, but could also be used for video, panels, and presentations too! My hope is that this will help more people create teaching resources, so go forth and create!
The CovidSafeCosplay blog and its admin are unaffiliated with the patternmaker or website, and are simply sharing the resource. Blog admin has not personally tested this pattern. Please thoroughly read the pattern for full instructions.

You may have already seen me post this image:
But now I will go into how I made it! I had four full days left before the convention, and multiple work days. I had already planned out the apron back in August and had decided to use one of my stash fabrics, which seemed just barely big enough for the apron.
I started by figuring out the exact length I needed for everything, (waist, straps, apron and chest panel) based on the dress I had just finished and this image from the back of the first book.
This is the largest thing I have ever patterned myself (I made a choker once) and I love how it turned out!!!
Anyway, once I attached all these pieces, I put my focus on the frills/pleats. I asked in a cosplay discord that Iโm a part of for help with fraying my fabric and I got so many cool responses!
I had used this video tutorial to make the holes (sanding): https://youtu.be/RxEadNyiOlo?si=SGIywyzRTyMNj6ye
but I wasnโt sure how to prevent the fabric from fraying everywhere. Someone mentioned fray check, which I had never heard of before, but its basically a glue/sealant made specifically for fabric! Luckily my local craft store had it in stock, so I picked it up and kept working on my cosplay.
Hereโs a quick video to show how I sanded my fabric. In my tests I found that when my fabric is smaller, the holes are more likely to tear to the edge of the fabric, and I needed round holes. So I cut my fabric into strips long enough for two pieces, sewed the raw edge that would attach to the rest of the apron, sanded the piece, then finally added fray check on the holes AND the chalk line between the two pieces that I would later cut along.
Here is what these pieces looked like before pleating,
and hereโs how they look attached to the apron.
Bonus detail: Sumire has a black line on the chest piece of her apron. I decided to add a ribbon, but didnโt have any black in my stash. (Note that this is just 10 inches) I went to Michaelโs back in October, and couldnโt find black ribbon near that width, but there was a double the length and a super thin optionโฆ. and a SPIDER RIBBON!?!? a spider ribbon that is the perfect width AND like half the price compared to the other two options!?!
Itโs important to note that the Splendid Work of a Monster Maid is a manga with a spooky aesthetic, and that my first goal was to get this costume done by Halloween of last year.
Anyway I got the spider ribbon! I think it adds a nice extra detail that makes the apron more unique and fun! ๐ท๏ธ๐ท๏ธ
This progress brought me to 3 major details left: the bow on the apron, the maid headband and the necklace key that I hadnโt started yet. But oh! look at the time! The convention opens in an hour!
