I know this metaphor features mainly in Locke & Aristotle but I have initially encountered this in an argument against passive learning (for which the signet-ring-to-wax is the metaphor) and I do fully believe incidental learning accounts for perhaps 5% of your knowledge base and everything else you need to extract from the jaws of a lion
