Secondly, you can kill everyone who tries to kill you and get an ending where Frisk returns to the surface and is presumably happy. You can kill everyone who tries to kill you and then some and get this ending. What is 'punished' (although to what extent it is a punishment when it's just a new storyline, which is a sort of reward for the player, is debatable) is going out of your way to kill everyone you can kill the way you would in a videogame where this trope is played straight. Thirdly, the game is metafictional enough that it is valid to ask if the characters are really trying to kill you.
