Something of Our Own - Chapter 28: Faring Well

Hazelle wants to rebuild, Haymitch tries not to tear everything down, and there are embers in ashes. or, Haymitch and Hazelle find themselves after the war.

She's able to pack, leaving the district this time around. Hazelle places her rolled underthings inside the sage green trunk, on top of her folded clothes. She's tucked money into several pockets and set aside what she'll carry on her person, including their identification cards that were updated when they left Thirteen. Her toothbrush and hairbrush, she'll add before they leave for the train station tomorrow morning. That should be everything for her.

Although I'm still rusty af from another artblock of mine, the interest and support under this post really pushed me to try and do something with this idea. So far, this is extremely early stage of drafting, but I'm just curious to see, if people would really read a potential sotr rewrite.

On the morning of the Reaping, Lenore Dove always thinks about Willamae Abernathy.  Not the one she knows, with cracked red skin on her hands, and creases gouging through the dark skin of the woman’s stern face – but about the girl of nineteen, mere three years older than Lenore Dove herself. How scared must she have been, carrying that large belly, heavy with a babe ready to pop up any minute now, yet still forced to go to the square. To watch kids being sent to their death. Lenore Dove presses the pillow of her palm against her own flat stomach, trying to imagine the feeling of having another life inside; of knowing that one day it might get summoned on the stage too.  She can’t.  She would never do so, much to Clerk Carmine’s joy. Last thing they need, he says, is another thick-skulled Abernathy. Whether he once told her mother as much, only about a hot-headed Chance, she doesn’t know.

(character ask) 15. What's your favorite ship for Haymitch?

Okay, I thought about it for too long. So, here is a stream of consciousness answer based on canon, and I would love to hear what everyone else thinks-- AU or otherwise!

no but yeah, hard agree. I really, really like the idea of Hazelle's time as his housekeeper being groundwork for something (and/or a tense reunion) rather than like. the deterrent lol

bc it's one thing for Haymitch to fall in love with someone kind to him. it's a WHOLE NOTHER MATTER to think Hazelle could see the state of him and his house and then (postwar, with Haymitch in recovery,,) being like 'okay hear me out' like 👀 GIRL DO TELL!!!
