And then that awful realization, that you are asleep, this is not real, it is the other that is real, you are dreaming!

I do think it’s a conscious and deliberate choice on anne’s part to follow up on louis + claudia’s book (iwtv) with a sequel constructed from the perspective of their parent (lestat), and to also follow up armand’s book (tva) with a sequel also constructed from the perspective of his vampiric parent (marius). she’s deliberately playing with differences in perspective to reveal and/or obfuscate abuse - in particular the parental kind which is the most fundamental relationship in her constructed universe. it isn’t particularly a coincidence that the vampires continue to owe their lives to ‘those who must be kept’ i.e. the ‘MOTHER’ and the ‘FATHER’ and that any harm inflicted on them is reflected onto their selves and translates into total obliteration of their consciousnesses unless they curry eternal favour with them.

Hi, how are you? :) I was wondering, if you've read Blood and Gold - does Marius ever say anything about why he turned Sybelle and Benji? After he spent the previous books telling everyone and their aunt how much he "regrets" turning Armand so young (you know, like a liar), he just ...turns a 12 year old in TVA and convinces himself that it's out of love for Armand ...godddd. (I really hope Anne was trying to drive something home thematically about Marius' selfishness or possessiveness there because abducted, parentified, adultified, vampirised Benji is one of the most tragic characters in the whole series, he's just too little to know it yet, and God I Hate Marius.) Was curious about how much Marius lies to himself in his own book, but 800 pages of Marius pov...🤢🤮 Thanks either way and have a good one! Xx

I never finished the book because I kind of got sick of marius referring to armand as amadeo well past his time in venice. lolita-isms. and at some point it also became apparent to me that I’d be better off reading the book from start to finish (eventually, I just find him really annoying) but sybelle and benji were never referred to by their names and I’m uncertain if there were any allusions to them.

but the sybelle and benji thing is really about entrapment achieved through underhanded means, right? it was what marius was doing with armand even in venice. he frequently paints a picture of safety and security in order to entrap people he desires and armand is aware of this. this is why armand rejects his invitation to stay at his home (which would literally place armand in an environment designed in the greco-roman fashion, hm) and potentially resume a domestic relationship with him (whatever it may entail) in the opening chapter of the vampire armand.
