Is this new???? I've been wanting wildcard relationship search for YEARS 😍😍😍
My multishipping ass is about to go ham...
helpful info for those who need it
Explanation of what this does for anyone confused!
my favorite genre of fictional character is like "i am terrifying to almost everyone, i'm very good at killing, i can endure anything, i've become exceptionally good at playing into my reputation, and if you try to give me positive social interaction i will react with confusion and cower in a corner like an abused animal. and i may try to shoot you. but there is also a chance i may imprint on you like a feral dog receiving its first loving touch! good luck."
Derin! I’ve never read any Animorphs, but as a fellow cat lover who also loves Animorphs, I think you should see the family of mama and kittens who were just posted from the cat foster page I follow:
(For anyone wondering why some of them have bits of color on their lil noggins, foster mom put lipstick on them to tell them apart from their otherwise identical siblings until they get a bit bigger and they can tell them apart more easily)
I love them <3 <3
I don’t mean to be rude; but I don’t think I’ve ever seen this, does anyone have any examples?
- Supernatural
- Doctor Who (Steven Moffat specifically)
- Sherlock (Steven Moffat specifically)
- Actually Steven Moffat is basically just this sentiment given human form.
- A version of this happened with The Magicians, tbh. Though instead of expectation: men, reality: women it was expectation: smug nihilists, reality: mentally ill queer folks.
- Arguably Game of Thrones.
If we broaden it outside of television…I think Star Wars falls into this, at least the sequel trilogy. Maybe the MCU as well. And I can’t help but think of every band that’s ever complained that their fanbase is mostly women. 5 Seconds of Summer comes immediately to mind.
In general, most white male creators seem to have this massively entitled mindset where they want–and think they deserve–the time, attention, and enthusiasm that creative fandom (i.e. the side of fandom more dominated by women) is known for.
They want our eyes for ratings, our word-of-mouth for free publicity, our metas for social media buzz, and our spending power for merch and cons. But they don’t want us. And they don’t really want the responsibility of telling a story to a thoughtful, engaged audience, regardless of that audience’s demographic makeup. They just want to be praised for whatever schlock they cough up.
And like any other spoiled brat, they will break their toys before they share them.
It goes all the way to the top for kids shows. Toy sales will crash a show. Makes sense, but if those toys are gendered for boys instead of the female viewers, they won’t usually switch up the marketing and move them to the girl aisle. They cancel the show outright.
Mind you it is perfectly possible to make the switch in marketing, but execs would rather throw it all out than have something that doesn’t perform well with male viewers. For example the Rey merch was not expected to be popular, for some reason, there had to be public outcry to get merch of one of the main 3 protagonists. A PROTAGONIST. The fact that she wasn’t a huge part of the 1st launch says a lot already.
And what happened when female fans got too invested in the Sequel Trilogy? The entire writers room didn’t necessarily lash out, but they sure forgot how to behave.
#WhereIsRey (initial)
#WhereIsRey (ongoing)
You’re all sitting on the hot take of the decade tbh
And yet when they fond out that boys were watching MLP:FIM in droves, they had NO PROBLEM with it.
#SONS OF ANARCHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!#LITERALLY SONS OF ANARCHY IS THE BIGGEST EXAMPLE OF THIS LIKE EVER#kurt sutter wrote that show for MEN and ended up with an overwhelmingly female audience#because he’s actually a good writer and knows how to develop characters well and wrote excellent female characters#but once he realized that his audience was almost entirely women he literally took it out on tara and gemma in the show#but like tara specifically#he resented her character for being a huge draw for female viewers so he tore her development to shreds and killed her#in the most brutal gut wrenching way possible#kurt sutter you will pay for your crimes#i actually wrote a manifesto about this on one of my old blogs i should try to find it sldkjsldfjsdljf#long post (via@m-oonknight)
OMG YES. I LOVED Sons of Anarchy, especially the women and then I got to season 6 and it was like - everything was just tossed in the trash? And like, why did Sutter hate that Tara drew tons of attention? That should have been a good thing! He should have been like “Hey folks, this girl’s getting us more viewers, let’s put her in more scenes!” It just doesn’t make sense to me. MEN don’t make sense to me.
The 100 too. I’ll never forget how Jason Rothenberg would attacked female fans on Twitter and mock them in interviews, and then post links to male fan discussions on Reddit to praise and thank them. In his goodbye letter to the show he SPECIFICALLY thanked Reddit and it was so disgusting.
Star Trek from TNG on was also a boy’s club, even though the TOS fans were mostly women. Women, in fact, who literally created modern fandom with their zines. But after TNG it was all, “Women don’t understand Star Trek, only smart men hur dur.”
I think it would be harder for us to find examples of when this DIDNT happen than when it did. It happens all the time.
Doesn’t stop it from boggling the mind
(though it could probably start to make some sense if you follow the money past audience bases to maybe a couple of investors or like a rich patron … 🤔)
Stooooop I just wrote a masters thesis on this shit. Media creation and distribution is a means by which dominant power structures consolidate their hegemony. Dominantly situated creators get upset when the audience they attract isn’t the audience they wanted, because they view the whole creation and sharing of the fiction as an exercise to sustain kyriarchal conditions that benefit themselves. When the audience is Other, they see it as a failure of those efforts and lash out.
Simply, they’re trying to assert a particular worldview via fiction, and upon getting confronted with something else, begin foot stamping. It’s not just men wanting male attention and gatekeeping. It’s that the fiction in the first place was an attempt to curate dominance and whoopsie! they miscalculated.
(anyway if anyone wants to read 35k words of philosophy about this, hmu)
I think a lot about an interview I heard with Bo Burnham a few years ago, where he talks about this phenomenon with his own work. He gained a large audience of teenage girls, and people in comedy spaces would look down on him for that or say what a shame it was, but he responded differently:
“The real truth is, I would perform my show and I would meet kids after and young girls would come up to me and they understood what I was expressing in that bit onstage way more than guys my own age. Way more. So if there was a bridge between us that I had to cross to write the movie [Eighth Grade], it was built to me by them. I felt understood by them before I presumed to understand them.”
Instead of trying to change his comedy, he decided to lean into and celebrate the audience that he actually had by making a movie specifically about the experiences of a teenage girl. It’s fascinating to hear him talk about how he got there, but also to acknowledge how rare that reaction is.
The Cat with Julie Manet (detail), 1877
by Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1919)
hey so last night i was looking for charming teddy bears, and what should have been a just and noble quest devolved into a horrible discovery:
for around 200 big ones, you can purchase a teddy bear with the body of a man and the eyes of a creature that knows it should not exist
despite the fact it's dressed like the boring guy you avoid at office christmas parties in every ad, it does not, in fact, arrive at your home khaki'd up and ready to go.
he's 5'7" so i hope you just have clothes for an adult man just laying around. and yes, his name is Puffy.
anyways the naked photos further cement his horrid homunculus status.
all of the information provided about this thing make it seem like its creators only have a passing understanding of human beings.
i mean like yeah. that is true. teddy bears are usually shaped like bears and this one certainly is not.
kill the ones you love. puffy is enough.
puffy is enough.
hey! don't be scared, okay?
puffy is a milky brown!
It’s absolutely awful, thanks very much and props to OP for the documentation.
They want you to take this thing on a business trip. Do you need to book an extra plane seat for him or what.
"it's all in your head" correct! unfortunately I am also in there
Reaction after two business days
i think the hill i'm going to die on here is that lasting anti-fascist activism begins and ends with unrestricted social services.
protests are great. kind of indispensable right now. but in times when we can be less reactive, you want to know what you're protesting *for*, not just against.
today i saw a post elseweb saying "why aren't white women fleeing maga? they have to know by now that tradwife means sex slave". and like... it's very simple. they can't leave because they would end up like me.
they're, we're, deliberately made unemployable so that we'll have to marry whatever mediocre white man picks us out. as it happened, i was unappealingly intersex, fat, butch, and autistic, so none of the mediocre white boys of my generation ever took a second look at me, but that didn't give me job skills or career connections.
i knew multiple women whose husbands divorced them and took the house as part of their midlife crises. they had to send the kids to live with relatives and take dead-end jobs like bagging groceries because they were in their forties with zero job experience. if they'd rejected the worldview, if they'd alienated their families and what few friends didn't victim-blame them for the divorces, they'd have had nowhere to turn.
it's been over twelve years since i got out. psychologically, medically, i'm healthier. but i've chased a fresh start through half a dozen states. i spent my inheritance getting a degree. none of it helped. there are no supports for abandoning (or being abandoned by) your support network.
you won't defeat fascism until my people are free to leave the cult if they realize they want out. until we can access free housing to get away from financial abuse, free comprehensive job training and placement services to help us start careers, national healthcare so we can flee across state lines if necessary without losing any medical care we're lucky enough to have access to, protections for children and teens so they can flee without needing a parent's help... universal basic income would be really good but there are smaller steps that could help with financial independence.
and it all has to be available to everybody, including people you think are "unworthy". people who hold the wrong opinions. drug addicts. people whose husbands or parents make too much money. people who aren't from around here. unrepentant bigots. if they want out, you have to give them a path out. minds can change later, once people are less scared and less pressured.
(i'm ex-catholic. do you want to hear about what happens when you force people to profess certain beliefs in order to access basic assistance? i have two thousand years of examples.)
"but if they really wanted out they'd do the Right Thing and leave without support!" Better to be one man's sex slave than turning tricks on the street. "staying just proves they're actually evil and there for the bigotry!" Live in your car for six months in 100°F heat, twice, and then talk to me again. There's no virtue in cutting yourself off from society just to prove some kind of moral point. All that does is get you dead or worse.
("JT, you're not dead" I'm a fucking cockroach. Most people would be dead by now. Survival bias goes both ways; we're not all the same model of airplane.)
Shoes moonlighting as Little Red Riding Hood
I recently scrolled past this one post that talked about how a certain turian was oh so important to the SR-1 crew because he was working on Mako while Kaidan and Ashley were basically doing nothing. And while I have no interest in "correcting" the author of that post, I'm pretty sure we don't talk enough about how essential Kaidan and Ashley are to the SR-1 crew.
So Ashley is filling in for Corporal Jenkins, which means she has her own unit of soldiers to command, just like she did on Eden Prime.
What does that mean in practice? She does the training, she does the physical and psychological assessments, she does the team building exercises, she writes reports for her CO. If you've ever been the leader of a small team (in Ashley's case, about 7-10 people), you know it's a hell of a job because you have to be both a babysitter and a confidant to fully grown adults who tend to get into all kinds of trouble with each other.
She also maintains the squad's weapons in her off hours, which is wow? Great job, Ash. Now go get some rest.
Kaidan is the staff lieutenant and head of the marine detail, which makes him the third most important person on the ship after the captain and the XO.
What that means in practice is that he's constantly observing and evaluating the work of all the marine personnel aboard the Normandy, working with lower-ranking officers like Ashley to determine how correct and effective their actions with their units are, determining what kind of duties and positions are best suited for each marine on board (he's definitely responsible for Anderson's decision to add Ashley to the crew), and doing the same babysitting, training, and confidant duty for not just one squad, but for every member of the marine detail.
He's also a really good tech specialist, so I bet he does a lot of calibrations on the squad's weapons, armor, and omni-tools.
So yeah, big shoutout to the most useless members of Shepard's team, who are literally responsible for keeping this whole Sarenhunting Spectre shitshow running smoothly.
Found it by accident and oh boy, this post was even worse than I remembered.
I have several things to say…
- Tali definitely doesn't help with the engine, aka the drive core, because there are crew members trained to work with it. Tali is smart, sure, but you can't just open any console in Engineering and find schematics and core work protocols. What she does is disassemble probes and other tech that Shepard's crew finds on their missions.
- Liara is a Prothean expert and that's, you know, important for Shepard's ME1 missions? That's also why the geth were on Therum. Saren needed both the Prothean expert and leverage over Benezia if she decided to go rogue.
- Let's unpack the whole Garrus thing, because oh my…
a. Mako is a tank. You have to be trained to do maintenance on a fucking tank. So since there's a tank on board, there's a team of technicians trained to work on the Mako. They do it. And they don't just do it with a console and a wrench.
b. Mako is not launched from orbit, it's a tank, not a shuttle. What happens (and you can clearly see all these animations in the game) is that Joker flies the Normandy really close to the ground and only then Mako rolls out of the cargo hold. I'm a Mako enjoyer, so I'd say it can be deployed from pretty high altitudes to avoid detection by enemy air defenses, but not from a fucking orbit. Do you even understand what the word "orbit" means?
c. Mako's robust design, which allows it to be launched from Normandy and survive Normandy's crash, has nothing to do with Garrus.
d. Besides, thanks to the Virmire survivor (the actual officer on board) and regular emergency drills, most of the Normandy crew survives the Collector attack. That's more important, no?
Garrus is an optional crewmember on board, he doesn't do anything important, and you can love him without making shit up.
i’ve been told by various european friends that the most american sentence i’ve ever said is “sophomore year of college, some friends and i road-tripped thirteen hours to florida for spring break.”
and now i can confidently say this is the most guy-who-lives-in-paris sentence i’ve ever said: “today i was cycling to meet a friend at buttes-chaumont and i went over some cobblestones and my baguette got launched out of the bike basket into the middle of the roundabout”
@derinthescarletpescatarian I need an Australian sentence now.
Once I was on an eighteen hour train ride into the city and the complementary tea service was down because the train had hit a kangaroo on the way up and broken their hot water system.
is that actually true? not that it would shock me too much but I wanna know if it's a real situation or just off the dome
Yes it happened to me when I was working on a cattle property in Queensland
I also had my one and only four wheeler accident there when I was biking out to look at some eagles at the creek with an eight year old.
wait australia says four wheeler? that’s interesting bc i grew up saying it but everyone else here in the US says ATV
We've always called them four wheelers on my farms.
The evolution of (trans) man.
(Well, this one, anyway.)
- Age 9: "Tomboy"
- Age 15: Strictly enforced femininity
- Age 30: Hitting the mental limits of being closeted all his life and about to crash HARD
- Age 47: Fifteen years now since starting transition. Far more good days than bad, no regrets.
The world may be full of uncertainty and danger, but I resolve to continue to find joy in who I am. Be joyful to be kind to yourself and be joyful to spite the bastards who would tear us apart.
