Little confusion

Idk if I made this up by myself or if there's actual reasoning behind it

does toxic ships = abusive ships???

I thought toxic yaoi or whatever meant that 2 lads were EQUALLY bad for one another. Not just one person having power over the other

Cause then if that's the case, why are we calling an abusive relationship.. toxic yaoi and squealing abt how good it is.

Don't get me wrong, being equally bad for one another is horrible as well. But abusive makes me think of, "Hey I have power over you and I'm FORCING you to stay with me even if you dont want to. I'll hurt you physically or mentally (or guilt trip) if you try to leave me." And that is just, woah!! Not good

Compared to, "I hate you, and you hate me. We hurt each other but can't stand being with someone else. We are willingly stuck with one another even when given chances to leave (without harm)." or some other variations where it's more of a willing relationship rather than forced/pressured by a more dominant person.

So, are they different or the same or have been mixed up a lot that there is no definite answer.

It's a bit difficult to tell where the line is drawn when it comes to the toxic yaoi/yuri trope and when it becomes abusive, but I'd say you can tell when it becomes an abusive ship depending on how much damage is inflicted, and how it affects the characters

Do the characters fight in an equal level and usually end up in a similar state one another? Probably toxic yaoi/yuri Do they have a power imbalance and/or they attack each other (either physically or psycologically) when they're vulnerable? Definitely an abusive ship

Do the characters seem mostly unaffected/are affected in a way that doesn't change their entire view of the world due to the relationship? Probably toxic yaoi/yuri Do their brain chemestry change, look at everything in a completely different way, their habits and mannerisms have changed for the worse and/or they fear their partner? Definitely abusive ship

DON'T TAKE MY WORD FOR THIS, as I said, it's difficult to draw the line when one becomes the other, and different people may have different opinions about this

Also, THIS APPLIES TO FICTIONAL SHIPS ONLY. IF YOU PERSON READING THIS ARE IN A RELATIONSHIP THAT IS LITERALLY A "TOXIC YURI/YAOI" TROPE, IN REAL LIFE THAT'S JUST A MUTUALLY ABUSIVE RELATIONSHIP

(And while at it, a small correction to your post. While it's true that most abusive relationships have this power imbalance, it's not always the same. Pointing it out because this idea cuts out in our minds the existance of mutually abusive relationships. There are few of them compared to those which are one sided, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. The same person can be both a victim and an abuser, and it's important to know this and how that may look like)

Auggh, thank you for providing examples! That genuinely helps a lot.

Also, thanking you separately for the last 2 bits. I am 100% talking about solely fiction relationships. And I am hoping no one in my audience, or in others or simply anyone in the world is experiencing such. And I didn't really know about the mutual abuse portion, or was aware of it existing. So, thank you for bringing that to my attention as well.
