There’s worse people to be interested in, but uh…
I dunno if she’s gonna get everything she wants outta that sorta relationship, if you know what I mean.
She was definitely considering you. I caught her eyes on you when your back was turned.

What? Really? I, uh.

I can’t say I ain’t flattered, but I got a lot goin’ on and I ain’t particularly sure she’s aware of the. Differences goin’ on here, where, y’know...

There’s a Gerudo woman here who confided to me that she’s romantically interested in Gorons.

Which… seems like a dead end, really.

I have a very pressing question?  Do Goron find the shells of octoroks a delicacy?

Eh? Not that I’m aware of, no. Things could’a changed since my time, though.

Why you ask? Got something weird?

Curiosity mostly!  They’re a bit stony–they generate those rocks a bit like pearls!

Can’t hurt to try, I guess. Who knows, might find some kinda use for those suckers we didn’t think of before. If not, then we know, right?

He waits while she processes things and writes them down, silent until she finishes.
“…managed to click for you, huh? Little guy’s a bit of a mess, but he’s doin’ his best. You doin’ alright there?”

“…I owe him a lot of apologies.” She looks up at Daruk, and though she’s always been small to him, she almost seems childlike right now. “I think I need to go and speak with him.”

“Alright. I’ll try to rest up so we can head out soon. Uh....don’t tell him I said anything about him thinkin’ about splitting the group, yeah? I kinda forgot he wasn’t sure if he wanted to do that and just wanted my thoughts on it.”

Daruk gives Zelda a sheepish smile, sighing as he moves his hands back to his lap.

“He said something about some guy named Sidon before he left, if that helps at all.”

“…he ain’t. He fakes it. Ended up spreadin’ word to the rest of us eventually, but I don’t know exactly what he said…it’s pretty hard on him, though. Like I know it’s hard on you, too.”
Daruk rubs at Zelda’s back a bit, careful not to shove her over out of her seat.

The phrase “he fakes it” does the trick. Something dislodges in Zelda’s mind, and she spends two minutes straight staring blankly at Daruk’s face like a deactivated guardian. Then without warning she jumps back to action, snatching up her slate, fumbling it as she activates the screen. She types wildly, expression still blank, until her screen is a wall of text. Then she blinks, comes back to herself, and frowns at what she’s written. Her eyes dart back and forth, reading over it, and she types a last couple of lines before clicking the button to save her work.

He waits while she processes things and writes them down, silent until she finishes.

“I know it was neither of your faults, and he knows that it’s not his job. The reason he’s got that form is so he can help you, and that’s what he’s wanted to do since he got into it.”
Daruk sighed, leaving his hand in place but giving Zelda a small smile.
“You were pretty frustrated with him…he was always quiet an’ you let your thoughts run wild with what you thought he must think’a you all the time, but what you came up with didn’t sound like him to me at all. So I suggested you an’ him go sit somewhere, and you ask him about what was goin’ on in that head of his. Told you to be patient, an’ wait for him to be able to talk about it after you asked…from what I can remember, you asked him somethin’ about how he keeps so confident like he does. An’ you said you felt a lil’ bit insulted when he laughed, but kept quiet until he pulled together enough to say something about it.”

She waits in silence for a few seconds after he finishes talking. When he doesn’t continue, and no corresponding memory pops out of the dark reaches of her mind, she prompts him on.

“And… what did he say?”

“...he ain’t. He fakes it. Ended up spreadin’ word to the rest of us eventually, but I don’t know exactly what he said...it’s pretty hard on him, though. Like I know it’s hard on you, too.”

“Hey now, I don’t mean like that, and I know he don’t either. The entire reason he’s doin’ what he is right now is because he wants to protect you, but he said with me around, he feels kinda…what was the word he used? Super-somethin’ or other. An’ he feels pretty bad about leavin’ the kingdom the way it is for so long.”
Daruk set a hand on Zelda’s back, concerned.
“He feels responsible for this whole mess because he never managed to access that light power thing he was expected to by…well, everybody. He honestly blames himself for more’n you do, I think. I guess…you don’t really remember the talk you had with him after I got to be a champion, do you?”

Daruk’s hand weighs a couple dozen pounds. The jolt Zelda gets from his gesture of comfort knocks her back to her senses.

“It was never his fault. And it’s never been his job to protect me. The opposite of both of those statements is true.” She glares at her boots for a moment before looking back up, frowning.

“…What talk?”

“I know it was neither of your faults, and he knows that it’s not his job. The reason he’s got that form is so he can help you, and that’s what he’s wanted to do since he got into it.”

“That might help, actually…ain’t sure he’d like it much, but honestly, can’t think of why anybody would.” Daruk’s grin is interrupted slightly for a moment before returning properly. “Reminds me, though. He said somethin’ about maybe splitting teams up some, if he can convince some folks about joinin’ up, so us Champions can stick together and some others can go with him to help fix up problems goin’ on round the kingdom and all of that. Said he was gonna talk it over with everybody before any decisions were made, but…I think part of it was because of my reaction to him. I think he forgot about the dog thing and felt bad for startlin’ me…”

Shock reads across her face, followed shortly by concern, and maybe… hurt? “He wants to leave?”

“Now that’s a fun time if I ever heard one. Honestly, I’ll be up and about before you know it, and then we can hit the trail and get goin’ again. Has been too long since I got to do…well, anything, really. So I’m lookin’ forward to it! Even if the Prince is…a little fuzzier than I’m used to.”

“I could make him littler.” She flashes him a grin with a hint of wickedness. “I’ve allowed him to think that I’ve forgotten that my slate can shrink him to some sort of puppy-like breed.”

“Monsters and Yiga are no problems. And I’m good to roll anywhere and everywhere, we Gorons are capable of handling extreme weather conditions with little trouble. Most I’ll need is a jacket or something like that.”

That gets a smile.

“We can take your measurements to a tailor while you recover. I know of a shop in Hateno that would be thrilled for the business.”

“Of course I am! I wouldn’t let you guys leave without me if I had any choice in the matter! S’just…that’s gonna take some gettin’ used to.”

“I think you’ll find that there are more pressing matters at hand.” She sighs. “Hyrule has changed in the past century. Monsters essentially run the wilds, and the Yiga Clan stalks the roads in broad daylight. And of course, our next stop takes us through Tabantha Tundra. Do they make Goron snowshoes?”

“It’s a bit embarrassin’, really, bein’ so big and bein’ afraid of something so…not big.” The last bit of information drew a laugh from him, and he rubbed the back of his head more before settling his hands on his lap. “Can’t say I blame him…I dunno what I’d do if I were stuck like that. Don’t imagine that it’d occur to me either, if I didn’t have hands or any of that. As for if that helps…not…not really. Don’t want you to see that side of me, neither.”

“I imagine that there are plenty of far more embarrassing things we’ll learn about each other, if you choose to come along with us.” She brushes some of her loose hair back and cocks her head to one side.

“Are you thinking of coming along with us? There’s always room in the group for a friend.”

“Of course I am! I wouldn’t let you guys leave without me if I had any choice in the matter! S’just...that’s gonna take some gettin’ used to.”

“Ah…he was a dog when I first woke up, nearly fell outta the bed here when I saw him sittin’ there lookin’ outside. Startled him just as bad as he did me, I think. But he apologized for it, then he did something to change over to normal. Wasn’t sure that he was bein’ serious with me about the slate thing. Seemed funny, y’know?” Daruk scratched at the back of his head, heaving a bit of a sigh. “I used to get chased by em when I was young. They were bigger’n me, and they’d always bark, and that kinda stuck with me as I grew up…Revali found out about that at one point, never let me live it down.”

The name “Revali” sort of sets Zelda’s teeth. It’s not the first time she’s heard it, though the association is faint, and the mood is annoyance.

“Plenty of people dislike dogs. It’s not at all unusual. But, no. Unfortunately, the slate magic is very real.” She shrugs, a glint of humor in her eye. “At least he’s able to speak now. When he first found me, I thought he was a stray, then some random fool who’d been cursed. It didn’t occur to him to pick up a stick and write “I am the Prince” in the dirt with it. He doesn’t bark much, though, if that helps.”

“I got you to thank for that. I dunno where we’d be without you, but I don’t think it’d be a very good place.” He messes with her hair a bit, grinning. “You ever need someone to talk to, or tell you about something that’ll lift your spirits, you let me know, alright? I’ll find something to tell you about that’ll get a smile outta you.”
He hesitates a moment before leaning in to actually properly whisper a question to her.
“Is, uh…is the Prince gonna be doin’ that dog thing most’a this trip? Dogs make me real nervous.”

His giant hand on her head ruffling her hair yanks most of it out of its tie, but she can’t be annoyed about it. The gesture was too familiar, the touch too comforting.

“The dog thing?” She’s so used to Link’s four-legged form that it barely registers with her now. “Oh. Mostly, I think. Maintaining a projection of his real body seems to drain him, or the slate, or whatever else permits him to exist outside the castle.” She frowns at Daruk, and tries to sift through her mind, but it’s shut back down after his story. “What about dogs bothers you?”
