Wasn't Vander beardless when he tried to drown Silco? Why did Silco let Vander be memorialized like this? Not to sound dramatic, but it feels like he's just retraumatizing himself this way.

Because the young Vander, the one that didn't have a beard, was the only respectable version of Vander. He was the Vander that was Silco's brother, the one who fought for his city and wanted his fellow countrymen to have rights and freedom. The old Vander, the one with a beard, was a pathetic man who allowed his people to be oppressed by topside because he was too afraid of what could happen if they tried to fight again. Silco doesn't hate Vander, he hates who Vander became.

"Your hands are steady," he noted, his voice pitched low enough that only you could hear. "Despite the pressure."

"Years of wine service," you replied, though you both knew your current steadiness had nothing to do with professional experience and everything to do with his observation of your work.

He made a small sound—not quite agreement, not quite dismissal—and reached past you to adjust one of your plating tools, his arm briefly brushing against yours. The contact was fleeting but sent an electric awareness through your system that nearly disrupted your careful composure.

"Like this," he demonstrated, his fingers repositioning the spoon you'd been using at a slightly different angle. The minor adjustment shouldn't have felt intimate, yet somehow it was—his expertise directly informing your movement, guiding you in shared purpose.
