Something Something Flowers

Chances are you’ve seen Fayum mummy portraits, the very realistic and warm panel paintings depicting the people of Roman Egypt between the 1st century BC and the 3rd century AD.

They’re breathtaking and very moving. Familiar faces, so human and so beautiful in their humanity. Most of them have been divorced from their purpose, torn from the bodies of the people they depict.

It is a different feeling entirely to see them in their original context.

This boy died before he could finish growing that mustache. Someone’s beloved son, crowned in golden laurels for all eternity, swaddled in linen. He is in there. The depiction of his face covers his face. The other portraits have lost their subject, greedily taken by those who wanted to admire their beauty without acknowledging the profound grief they represent.

This style of portraiture began to emerge during the Ptolemaic Kingdom when Egypt was ruled by Greek conquerors and was greatly influenced by Greek art and culture. Many portraits of early saints were created in the Byzantine Empire and/or in communities in the eastern Mediterranean which retained a lot of Hellenistic stylistic influence, thus the similarities in art and iconography. So the answer is kind of Alexander the Great and the transfer of power in Egypt from Persian rule to Hellenist Greek rule to Roman rule to Byzantine (headquarters in modern Turkey but largely Hellenistic in culture) rule. Lot of contentious stuff there that I do not know enough about to expand upon.

HEY, FELLOW HATERS OF INSANELY-BRIGHT CAR HEADLIGHTS, SOMEONE HAS STARTED A PETITION TO REGULATE THEM.

It's an official petition through the Australian Government's e-petition page, which means if it gets enough signatures, it will be tabled in government.

You do have to be an Australian citizen to sign it, BUT!!! PLEASE REBLOG THIS EVEN IF YOURE NOT, because these kind of things have a roll-on effect, and if Australia legislates LED headlights, then other countries may follow.

FYI, the petition asks only for your name and email, and once you've clicked the sign button, they'll send you an email to confirm your signature --- you need to click the confirmation link in the email to have your signature counted.

Anonymous asked:

How do you get such clean lines on Isha's glove thing? Tape??

Unfortunately I have no secret technique to share. I just used a fine tipped brush and a steady hand. Switching to Sable brushes for detail work has made a big difference as they keep their tip for a long time.

I don’t find myself masking very often when using the airbrush. I think the only thing I did mask was Isha’s face when I did the graffiti type art on the helmet.

Also getting a feel for the order of operations helps a lot. With messy steps with poorly defined boundaries first and working up to fine tip brushes.

First step for me is airbrushing (that’s where the purple and base skin tone comes in). Followed by the skin tone done with oil (very messy with all the blending). Then details get layered starting at the bottom most layer and working up.

The stripes (I’m not sure if you are referring to those or the fingerless gloves) are actually raised a bit, so it’s not too bad to paint them without hitting the base purple layer. And then finally mixing up some color match paint to fix any mistakes.

Hopefully that helped answer your question. Let me know if you have any more.

**PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!

I've cried, had panic attacks and redacted attempts. I desperately need help trying to keep my housing. I am just so freaking drained. I had a temp job last fall and I'm still looking for work. I don't qualify for unemployment and my mental and physical health is just taking a nose dive. I have been attempting to crowdsource my portion of rent for about 5 weeks to no success. If you see this please consider boosting and if you can and are able to any amount helps..

C*sh App: $acefluid03 130/1600

I’m going to be on the streets again if I can’t get to at least half of this.

Nothing in about two weeks.

I’m kinda of come to terms with this but I will be homeless by Monday, unless a miracle happens.

Thank you to every who boosted this and donated.

I wish my life wasn’t like this

320/800

I more so need to get to 800 so I really only need

480 left

I know I am yelling into the void but yall this is beyond an emergency. IF YOU CAN HELP PLEASE DOO.

Currently having a breakdown

Y’all I can’t be homeless again, I’ve lost so much in the past year

sssso....great news. my internet and phone bills are coming up. I absolutely cannot lose those. they're how I connect with everything and everyone. I am waiting on my disability hearing still, and I very much need them to talk to literally my entire support system. my family, my therapist, my doctor, my friends, my caregiver. I am homebound without a significant amount of aid. together, the bill comes to $50.

I also am...kind of out of food. I don't get food money until the third. I need cat litter and dish soap and other stuff. in order to get all of that delivered, as I don't have a way to go to the store and pick it up myself, is.

so, yeah. I can probably remove a couple of things, but for the most part it's all stuff that I absolutely need. I have no income, so I rely on the aid of other people to survive. please share, and send a few bucks my way if you can.

I have nothing to eat and I am really, really worried. I haven't eaten much over the last few days and I'm starting to get shakes. I am very, very hungry.

got enough to pay for my bill and a bit of food. I still need stuff like dish soap, deodorant, shampoo, cat litter, and toilet paper. also more food, because the stuff I got isn't going to last super long.

happy trans day of visibility, I'm trans and kinda starving. and desperately in need of basic necessities. can I get some help?

i cant belive that you of all people are at risk of homelessness >:(

homelessness isnt a problem that should exist in general, but you, specifically, should have like a million dollars from the star trek novels alone

(chuckle) Wouldn't that be lovely! (And it's kind of you to be thinking that way.)

But alas, that's not how it works.

When you're working in/for other licensed universes—which is always on a work-for-hire basis—the only really significant payment(s) you're likely to see will happen when you've turned in a given book and it's been formally accepted. And even then, the payment's rarely going to be higher than low-to-mid five figures... which (after your literary agent gets their cut, and after your taxes on the income get paid) won't take you very far even in a single year, let alone the years that follow.

If you're very lucky in your publisher, or have a very good agent—which I do—you may even manage to get some royalties on such a novel. But they'll be at the low end of the scale—maybe 2-3% of the cover price. (Bearing in mind that even for original novels in one's own universe, an author rarely gets more than 8-10% of a given book's cover price in royalties.) And when the book goes out of print, the royalties stop.

So just because the owner of the IP makes a lot of money off it, doesn't mean that any significant amount of it necessarily trickles down to the writer. (sigh) Nor does the fact that a book is good, or the writer is good, or both, make any significant difference to this kind of mathematics. Eventually, pretty much inevitably, sooner or later sales of a book drop off and the publisher lets it go out of print.

(shrug) It's not like I didn't know this was eventually going to happen when I wrote my Star Trek work. I did that because I loved Trek (and still do), and I was sure I could write a better Trek novel than anyone else had up until that point. (And maybe that was even true. Who knows.) To have done the work was the thing that primarily mattered.

But let this be a reminder to folks that only a low percentage of writers make enough from their writing alone to live on: and that something like 90% of writers at times live at or near the poverty line and sometimes slip below it. ...And for all of us, even for strong writers who seem moderately successful and have other income streams, bare patches happen: times when publishers don't pay (for example, I still haven't been paid anything for Disney/Marvel's reissue of my Spider-Man books), times when you can't work, or times when accident or illness or other unexpected circumstance eats the cash you've stashed away to serve as a cushion.

This is not a safe lifestyle. With talent and luck and endless slogging away at/over the writing mechanism of your choice, and with the support of your readers (who I'm very much thinking of at the moment!—and thanks again to the Ebooks Direct customers and Ko-Fi friends who just now saved our butts), it can be survived. Which, from day to day, @petermorwood and I do our best to keep on doing.

...In any case: people who even at this end of time can say things such as you did at the top of this, make me feel like about a million dollars. 🙂 (And since I have both an upper respiratory infection and laryngitis today, that's quite a trick!) ...So thanks.

The problem with the new Star Wars shows is that, no matter how good or bad they are, they all feel like tie-in novels now. They're not filler, they have a complete adventure within themselves, they might even have a character arc within their story, but they're not the main story. That there is no main story anymore, it's all just side story after side story.

The organisation was also widely criticised last year over a statement on the use of artificial intelligence in creative writing. After stating that it did not support or explicitly condemn any approach to writing, including the use of AI, it said that the “categorical condemnation of artificial intelligence has classist and ableist undertones”. It went on to say that “not all writers have the financial ability to hire humans to help at certain phases of their writing”, and that “not all brains have same abilities … There is a wealth of reasons why individuals can’t ‘see’ the issues in their writing without help.” Fantasy author CL Polk said at the time that “NaNo is basically asserting that disabled people don’t have what it takes to create art when they trot out the lie that scorning AI is ableist”.

I've been in "chrysalis mode" working on various projects and i haven't had much to share recently - so lets look back at some older works!

I started working on moving toward freelancing in 2020 and since then I've made a lot of drawings I'm proud of. Here are some faves! Many are available as prints in my shop. :-)
