Hey everyone! Just saying, half-joking DOES correspond to a spoken tone! It happens that, nonsensically, this tone is identical to a joking tone in sound, but completely different in use. It is used when the phrase itself is to be treated as a joke by listeners, but the phrase's direct meaning is meant sincerely by the speaker. Here's an example!

"you know I had scurvy a couple times /hj"

The appropriate way for another party to react, generally, is to treat this as a joke, but to REMEMBER that it was meant sincerely, and to keep that in mind for future reference

this is a common misconception! this actually disagrees with the Oxford Dictionary's definition of "half-joking", which is what /hj was originally based on!
