How to talk to trolls without falling down to their level: a guide.
Have you ever seen a troll comment with misinformation and wanted to respond but also didn't want to go "fuck you, your wrong"? Well here is a guide on what to do!
1. take a look at the trolls blog. Look at what they reblog and post, if anything. Keep what you see in mind, you will need it later.
2. Start your response politely. Something like "Hi there, i think you might not understand X, y, or Z." You can call them a troll in this step if you want to.
3. Explain in simple terms what they are trying to get a reaction for. If they are using the exsistince of trans people to try and get a rise for example, Explain to them the basic definition of what transgenderism that you would give to someone who has never heard of it before.
4. Acknowledge that they will not interact with your points in good faith. This is where you can bring up their post history. Make sure everyone knows they are a troll.
5. (Politely) tell then to fuck off. Say they would probably feel more comfortable on another website, like Twitter. Be as passive aggressive with this as you want, but do not actually attack them.
6. Post the response and move on with your day. Go pet a cat or drink some coffee or go on a Walk or write some fanfiction. Do something. You aren't a troll who's at their keyboard 24/7 after all. If they respond back, the block button is always nice!

not to be a killjoy but it's still crazy to me that it's considered mean to be like "maybe you should read / play / watch the source material before creating fanworks and diving into the fandom" bc every time i see somebody going "i havent played disco elysium or know anything about it tbh but uwu here's harry and kim kissing" idk maybe you should engage with it. maybe you should play the anti-capitalist surrealist game where you investigate the murder of a mercenary who led the gang rape of a foreign girl and process that for a bit? and then you can do cutesy mlm or whatever idc. but like at the absolute bare minimum you should understand what the source material involves otherwise we get the phenomenon of people joining a dragon age server and wanting content warnings for like, mage racism. like it's fine to ship and transform the genre into whatever but if you arent comfortable with discussions of the actual source content itself then maybe the fandom isnt for you and a different one is. peace and love.
I would like to add, there is no shame in watching a playthrough of a game if you cannot afford or play it for some reason but are still interested in it. But you need to put in effort to understand the text. You should have an understanding of the characters and world before you start shipping.
#i would also say this goes for both making fandom ocs#and crossover/worldswap fics#because its important to understand the text and worldbuilding before you start writing#but also have fun with it! if you want to watch a playthrough of a game you cant afford right now#invite your friends to watch it with you!#just don't look at the source material like its a chore
