april is sjögren’s disease awareness month
sjögren’s is one of the most common causes of dysautonomia.
sjögren’s is a chronic systemic autoimmune disease that is commonly considered 'just' a disease of dry eyes and dry mouth.
and this characterization of sjögren’s being just dry eyes and dry mouth (although those alone can be very disabling!), is wrong.
in the US alone, it is estimated that 4 million people have sjögren’s disease (millions more than lupus!), and 75% of those patients are undiagnosed. and a lot of this is because too many people only think of sjögren’s as dry eyes and dry mouth. a LOT of patients do not complain of dryness, or only have dryness after other major damage.
sjögren’s disease can affect anyone at any age. it can harm the nervous system, eyes, ears, skin, muscles, joints, mouth, teeth, brain, liver, gut, lungs, and way more. it can cause chronic pain, fatigue, brain fog, infections, loss of vision or hearing. sjögren’s is NOT just dryness. it can be profoundly disabling and it can fucking kill you.
and there is no real diagnostic criteria. the guidelines were designed for research purposes only, and a lot of patients test negative based on those guidelines. the blood test for sjögren’s, by itself, is negative in 30%-40% of patients who have sjögren’s.
which is especially fucking bad since sjögren’s patients are 40 times more likely to develop cancer of the lymph nodes, or lymphoma. sjögren’s patients are more likely to have strokes, heart attacks, miscarriages. sjögren’s patients often have or develop another disorder of the immune system, like another autoimmune disease.
sjögren’s is everywhere. it is not curable and it is not taken seriously enough. it can cause major problems, it can be deadly, it can be monitored, and it can be treated.

Grif definitely keeps stashes of emergency food (from snacks to canned goods), and Donut definitely keeps stashes of extra seasonings/preserves, and Simmons definitely keeps stashes of extra water/fire sources, and you'd think this would mean they'd be fine and work together in dire situation... but Grif suddenly develops a very strict (and unfair) barter/trade system (you need to either give him something worth double what he has or provide a service that is is very difficult which is why he doesn't want to do it), Donut is trying to make his own weird fermented spiced banana wine (it is not good) that wastes everything, and Simmons has declared himself the Dictator of Water and Fire (he tries to ration everything to such an extreme, he won't let anybody drink anything at all for way too long, so then they're ally super dehydrated, even him, so they chug it all at once)

Took the Grif and Simmons faces from the group picture, and added in their signature colors with some extra high-lights/shadows. I also wanted to show the colors blending together, and also having opposite effects (Simmons' background color is darker than what shows in his face/hair, while the colors for Grif are lighter around him but darker on his body. the shine on Simmons is tinted a little bit yellow/orange, and Grif has a touch of the maroon before fading into warm orange/brown for his shadows)
Grif is leaning back against Simmons with his head tilted up, eyes closed, and smiling (head-tilts are tricky at an angle, but this turned out pretty decent, and I really wanted to make sure you could see Grif's jaw and double-chin clearly). He has some scruffy facial hair along his chin and jawline, the eye on the left has a patch of lighter skin around from the surgery, and his thick/wavy hair is parted in the center then falls over his shoulder. Simmons is looking down at Grif with a calm and affectionate expression. He has a defined curve to his nose, hair that has off-center bangs and is pulled back into a ponytail, the left side of his face with cybernetic coverings around his eye/jaw/chin
(I originally did this with a pencil sketch on paper, blended with different colored pencils and pens. I used mostly blue/green colors, then after scanning it, I de-saturated it, adjusted the warmth, and added the colors in MS 3D Paint. I have different "styles" when I draw, and for whatever reason, I've noticed that when I draw more detailed pictures of my face designs for RVB characters, I lean into inspiration for how Steven E Gordon draws features in character's faces)

Black Character Design Poll: Event Rules
I am an avid lover of graphs. I like numbers, I like trends and the absence thereof. I like the mindsets that make people make decisions, I like recognizing the biases, both conscious and unconscious, in sampled populations. I like how you'll always gain some sort of answer, even if it's not the one you expected (it's the scientist in me)! Best of all, I like making people question themselves! So... Why not a poll?
This is going to be a TWO-PART event. The first portion is going to ask the First Question, starting Sunday April 13th and I will stop taking submissions Saturday April 19th. The second portion is going to ask the Second Question, starting Sunday April 20th, and I will stop taking submissions Saturday April 26th.
