okay so i'm on chapter 10 now

it's revolting yet intriguing. it has this morbid curiosity to it which makes you want to put it down, but you're so fascinated that you just keep flipping the page. what's interesting to me is that humbert acknowledges several times that liking young girls is wrong, yet he places himself on a pedestal for having a 'superior taste' than his peers, and views those who stand in his way as obstacles. humbert's mind is very contradictory, and somewhat childish; it's implied that his fascination of young girls is a means for him to go back to childhood, as in his relationship with dolores he doesn't view himself as a powerful figure in her life, but rather as an observer. i think other adaptions of this novel, especially the films, really fail to capture its essence because the biggest piece is to literally be inside of the mind of a madman, which is what makes it so enthralling. plays, films, ect are always consumed through third person, whereas with novels you can really crawl inside the narrators mind and look out from their eyes, which is the correct way to consume this story

another thing that's interesting to me is how the perspective changes. whenever he interacts with dolores he switches to third person, and when doing so he switches his first name for the given adjective. he describes himself as a monster or a spider in the third person, yet in the first person he thinks very highly of himself. this builds off of what i said in the previous post, in which he doesn't think his advances towards dolores take away from her innocence, but rather by being closer to her he's absorbing some of her innocence.

back to the names; his fixation with dolores has nothing to do with herself, and not even entirely because she's a 'nymphette.' since he met her, he never even tried to touch another child. he views dolores as his, being that she is not a human, but just lolita. earlier in the novel, when he thought that the prostitute who had lied about being 18 had 'grown overnight', he instantly lost all attraction to her. that being said, he seems to live in the fantasy that dolores won't grow, because she is not human, only lolita. essentially, the reason for his fixation with her is because of his own emotional attachment issues. he latches onto anything ignorant to his perverseness so he can forget the fact he has been socially ostracized for dreaming of something he can never have, and having nowhere to vent to. i'd even go as far to say that he thinks his predicament is worse than any harm he could cause to a child, which is why he pities himself so much. all in all, his self confidence in the first person is a means to mask the reality we see in the third person
