Hi. I'm Fern

@fernshawart

I write stuff and do art. I'm currently obsessed with a bunch of squids https://archiveofourown.org/users/FernShaw

I just had a thought that many others probably had before me but I need to voice it

In Deltarune it is clearly said that "your choices don't matter" but seeing the differences between timelines for the snowgrave route, we can already guess that this isn't necessarily true. But I just remembered that Noelle's character arc is based on learned helplessness, being taught no matter how much she tries her actions won't impact the outcome of her story.

Is Toby fox trying to make us experience the same thing ?

By telling us directly that our choices don't matter, is he actually making a point to see if we, the players, will try to go beyond the learned helplessness that he taught us and will try to forge a good ending even if the game explicitly tells us that it may not be reachable, just like how you can only get the true ending of Undertale by repeatedly sparing Toriel despite having no indication that this choice will ever work ?

Whenever I see a hc that Callie was scarred from the S2 story mode, I just picture the situation being very somber.

Hiii I hope you're well! I was looking for your blog because I bought a painted Pokémon card from you at a con a few months ago and I wanted to thank you again because it's still one of the coolest things I've ever bought, I love it so much!!

I was wondering if there was a gallery of some kind where one could find more of your painted card work? Also, would you ever be open to taking painted card commissions?

Have a nice day again :>

Hi ! Oh my god it's AMAZING to see someone find me on Tumblr after all this time ! I'm SOOOO happy you liked my card that much <3

I'm currently not taking any commissions but I do have quite a few cards for sale, more than 300 pokemon cards ! They can all be found right here :

https://www.cardmarket.com/fr/Pokemon/Users/Fernshaw

Since they all have their own little photos you can also just admire them there ! Once again it's amazing to hear that you liked my card it means the world to me

are you in the opinion that inkfish (ig really just inklings) are viviporus, oviparus, or ovoviviparous? ovoviviparous would make sense seeing theyre trying to "imitate" humans to some respect but still have squidlike features... but as far as i know we only have proof as to where octarians come from and no proof as to if inklings do the same

Avatar

reproduction lore posting 🔥🔥🔥 i see them as egg layers. maybe them being ovoviviparous could work maybe but??? idk, eggs have to be involved. also them being egg layers is weird and i like when inkfish are Weird. I've gotten into this topic before on this blog but it's been a couple years and i think it's worth rehashing First thing to address: bellybuttons. They have them and I hate it almost as much as i hate that they have breasts. i think both are just a result of "imitating" humans in universe, and for design reasons so they don't come off as too uncanny to us, the human playerbase. which is just cowardice to me but okay.<3 In this concept art for Callie in the Art of Splatoon 2 i think this is the only time bellybuttons are addressed, in the top right corner:

"I realized this while drawing, but inklings have bellybuttons..."

that really sounds like it was a design choice that wasn't thought about that deeply...

now there's 2 things that make me believe they have to come from eggs. first from the first artbook:

This is the growth cycle of a squid from its larval to juvenile stages.

larvae come from eggs.

Of course, when we talk about these girls, we can't leave out the "Calamari Inkantation" which is both heavenly to listen to and heavenly to sing. This song, which is also used as the train melody for the Inkopolis Line, is imprinted in the DNA of all Inklings. The sea is our mother, the place where all of life hatched from, and the place where there is no way to return. Since ancient times, this song has been filled with the swirling feelings of "love" and "reverence" towards the sea.

I translated this myself, the word there is specifically "hatched" like from an egg, and not a general term for being born.

One could argue that since this is referring to the squids of the past, it might not apply to modern inkfish. But still real life cephalopods lay eggs, and I don't think it'd be out of the question for modern inkfish to do the same. There are other sapient species that didn't "evolve out" of egg-laying, evidenced by Nishida's 247 siblings and this scroll on coconut crabs.

Regarding Octarians, Octolings develop in the same way Inklings do. so they too would likely come from eggs.

we're ignoring this because 1. it's clearly just concept art that 2. has more recent evidence going against this being the norm for octoling development. I think this is just a weird edge case or just straight up not canon.

baby marina matching the 3rd stage of inkling development shown on the above chart while paul looks like the 4th stage. There's also smollusk that looks like the first stage/ a real octopus paralarva, but since it's a digital entity, who knows how valid that is? Also, Mashup/Warabi from Diss-pair was also confirmed in Ordertune to have come from the same hometown as Acht (the underground) and was described in Haikara Walker as having parents. So Octoling development=Inkling development=eggs??? finally, not 100% if this is what you're asking but as for cut-tentacle Octarians, but with Inklings, this has come up...once

-- But the Octarians like the Octotroopers...? Amano: That's a different thing. Inoue: All together they're part of the Octarian species, but Octarians like the Octotroopers are a separate thing.  --Does that mean that there are some squids that can't take a humanoid form? Inoue: So far, none have been discovered. There may be some somewhere, though

I think the "there may be some somewhere" is just keeping it vague in case they wanna use that idea. but i seriously doubt they will at this point. the concept behind octarians is that octopuses have basically tiny brains in each of their arms, so those tentacle octarians are like if their arms grew into a separate being. Real squids are not built like that, and we even see in game inklings having less movement in their tentacles, and use more styles that cut into their tentacles compared to octolings.

ok that's all TL;DR EGG SUPREMACY 🔥🔥🔥

I would go as far as to say it is confirmed that inkfish lay eggs if this piece of lore comes from nintendo Japan and is not a random NOA and NOE addition :

This post from fresh season 2023 actually describes young inexperienced inkfish as paralarvae, and then goes on to be more precise and say that this is the correct scientific term to describe squid and octopus hatchlings.

I feel like they wouldn't have been that precise if they didn't want us to know that they do come from eggs. Adding on to that, they did use a word that specifically includes both inklings and Octolings which to me adds on to the idea that they're also birthed from eggs.

I would REALLY love to know if anyone who has the japanese version of the game could confirm that this was available in their language too. For now I can only confirmed that it was added in both french and English

Ive always wondered.

Since fruit and grain consumption is so commonplace in Splatoon's culture. Wheres all the alcohol?

Inkfish society evolved almost the same as humans did, and one of humanity's first known inventions was the cultivation of alcohol through wild grain and fruits. It was also a neccesary process in ancient city-dwelling, as it could make unsafe water drinkable.

So the question stands, did Inkfish develop alcohol just as we did? Of course i doubt any mention of it in-game because its a (mostly) family friendly series.

they absolutely did develop alcohol!

>i doubt any mention of it in-game because its a (mostly) family friendly series you're in for a surprise bud

Squeezer using a champagne bottle is the most explicit in game example. Now for Flow, she canonically loves to drink. In JP she sounds loopy and mysterious when she speaks because she's... probably drunk.

Her name is Flow, a sea slug. She is a sales clerk at Headspace, a store that sells head gear. She always speaks as if she is drunk, giving off a mysterious air. She appears to be older than the Inklings, and seems to enjoy teasing the younger squids. Her companion, Craymond, is a considerate shrimp who gently watches over her.

This character trait of hers got censored in english, notably on the Splatoon Base website

the highlighted text in JP reads that she's "a drunkard who loves alcohol"

There is also this official artwork (my Favorite official art. btw.) of Sashimori, Hightide Era, and Bottom Feeders at a bar, with Bertie, Ryu Chang, and Taka at the counter drinking what looks to be alcohol.

May I also add Beika, who we know started drinking waiting for Kikura in his studio and then immediately started the biggest Splatband drama that we know because he got emotional

three person poly relationship made up of two people who are already dating trying to coax someone with horrific self worth issues into a loving relationship. stray cat style

they’re all laying together in bed and the couple are both thinking to themselves like good, he stayed the night to cuddle and talk when we offered, he should know that we genuinely care for him and want this to be more then a handful of one night stands. and the stray cat guy is like wow this sure is nice i think i’m falling in love with them. it’s really too bad that they don’t actually give a fuck and hate me and probably want to kill me with hammers for no reason
