i forgot to tell y'all—i scheduled a consultation for top surgery!!! it is october 9... worried that insurance might decide not to cover it, but they should, given that [by my own assessment, which is admittedly biased] i seem to meet the specified criteria for coverage. and i'm pretty sure i got the letters they want, and i've been on testosterone for well over a year. i'm not very good at doing my shot "on time", but that's more due to lack of awareness of what day it is than anything else.
okay, um. i had to dig through my blog's archive to see if i'd already provided any kind of context anywhere on my blog. in short: i did not get top surgery in 2024, despite going to the consultation in october, because i had a Medical Emergency in early november that landed me in the hospital for ~9 days.
but! i had a follow-up consultation with the surgeon i chose for top surgery yesterday--the first consultation was free, but i had to pay for this one--and my prior authorization from last year was still valid, and he was able to get me on the surgery schedule for next wednesday (april 9, 2025)?!!?!
i will honestly think this is some kind of elaborate prank until i wake up from surgery...

as of march 31, 2025, 11:17am eastern daylight time, xiaofeng wang's linkedin is still up. (here is a link to a screenshot for proof, because linkedin will not cooperate with the wayback machine or archive[dot]today.) his profile on the association for computing machinery, where his research is indexed (and some of it is available for download), is still up as of march 31, 2025 11:17am eastern daylight time.
if nianli ma had a linkedin at one point, it is no longer available online. i have been unable to discern if she has or had a profile on researchgate or a similar website at some point.

Once on IMDB I saw a “goof” which was that during a scene set in India(?), the light flicker was at the wrong frequency (in hertz). I wish I knew what movie it was to show you guys, I want to say it was some Marvel shit.
I always wondered how this person knew that. Was there an amazing Indian electrician who just instinctively felt the flicker rate was off? Did they go frame by frame and count the flickers per second?
I wanna say that was Tenet?
holy fuck

I will always be in love with highly specialized incredibly niche knowledge. Humans are beautiful
tumblr lives in constant fear of the looming specter of the loser virgin the ultimate tumblr boogeyman no matter how many trends come and go all are defined by a defiance of and reaction to the theoretical tumblr archetype of the loser virgin the website and the users in it cannot ever reach the 37th layer of enlightenment if we do not experience radical acceptance of the concept of the loser virgin this is the legacy of ace discourse the asexuals reject the status as loser and everyone else rejects the status of virgin despite how real and true such labels may be to your lived reality everyone loves to posture to this day that theyre not and in fact have nothing to do with the steven universe blogger with endless callouts and what do they do in defiance of this try and posture as much as possible about how cool they are how avant garde their kinks are the drugs and sex etc again all in fear of the actual truth of the legacy of the tumblr loser virgin i think we should all bravely come out of the closet here and say anyone can be conceptually a loser virgin no matter their life experiences this is a beautiful mindset once u move beyond fear into radical acceptance we dont need to keep posturing live your truth..

“The work is called did you sin today (pink walls), and in a slight moment, you could see the figure maybe smiling, as if, yes, I have sinned and it's our little secret. In each of Nnoli's newest works for her debut solo show, To Wander Untamed, on view with Rele Gallery in Lagos at the time of this conversation, there is a coming of age story engrained in the figures. Nnoli said that with these works, “I just want to escape the conditioning." A powerful sentiment that is both so universal and so personal.”

Charming couple! (his hands lifted up)—How will my good friend rejoice!—Oh that he were present!—You know not, madam, how dear you are still to your uncle Harlowe!— I am unhappy ever to have disobliged him! Not too much of that, however, fairest, thought I! He repeated his resolutions of service, and that in so acceptable a manner, that the dear creature wished that neither he, not any of his, might ever want a friend of equal benevolence. None of his, she said, for the captain brought it in that he had five children living by one of the best of wives and mothers, whose excellent management made him as happy as if his eight hundred pounds a year (which was all he had to boast of) were two thousand. Without economy, the oraculous lady said, no estate was large enough. With it, the least was not too small. Lie still, teasing villain! lie still!—I was only speaking to my conscience, Jack. (L216, robert lovelace to john belford)
hmm. intrigued by what's going on in this passage. would have to think for a while to pick apart how richardson makes it build so masterfully to that last line i quoted ("lie still, teasing villain!...") and how it works, but i can tell it does. lovelace is, i think, questioning his resolve re: "testing" clarissa. (n.b.: "he" in the first few lines is captain tomlinson, who is allegedly affiliated with clarissa's uncle, john harlowe. unsure if this is a ploy that was arranged by lovelace. not sure i want to check wikipedia or sparknotes for ~spoilers. don't remember from the introduction. been reading this particular letter for several weeks.)
i posted about this briefly on goodreads when i kept reading, but forgot to mention it here. it's revealed in the next letter that "captain tomlinson" is not in fact a friend of clarissa's uncle, john harlowe—his real name is patrick mcdonald, and he is a "variously-lifed smuggler," to paraphrase lovelace in L217.
i knew any alleged offer of reconciliation was too good to be true...
love it when you’re watching a movie and willem dafoe shows up
Currently doing an Insomniac's Gambit. For those of you who don't know, this is when you mess up your sleep schedule badly enough that you attempt to fix it by skipping an entire night of sleep then going to bed at a reasonable hour the next day. Crucially, it does not work
"yeah dude I'm gonna sleep in 20 minutes" -- the most "will stay up another 4 hours" guy you've ever met
Okay but get this -- they'll *never* expect the rare Double Insomniac's Gambit
the central construction of ptsd as an etiology seems to be for murderers
vietnam war veterans popularised the construction of the diagnosis in its modern form. and that was a war widely protested locally and fought in a foreign land. it was recognised in the dsm in the 1980s. i should really not be surprised that a book about trauma centers them.
saw a comedian from the middle east joke that only usamerican vets get ptsd, arabs just die or continue to live through trauma.
Palestine has some of the highest rates of mental illness in the world. A quarter of Palestinian adolescents have made suicide attempts; about 23.2% have post-traumatic stress disorder (according to a survey of 1,369 over three years) compared to around 6-9% in the US; and the Palestinian territories have by far the highest levels of depression in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Samah Jabr, chair of the mental health unit at the Palestinian Ministry of Health and one of just 32 psychiatrists in the Palestinian territories, doubts those statistics.
“I question the methodology. I think they’re measuring social psychological pain and social suffering, and they’re saying this is depression,” she says. “What is sick, the context or the person? In Palestine, we see many people whose symptoms—unusual emotional reaction or a behaviors—are a normal reaction to a pathogenic context.” There are many people in Palestine who are suffering. But Western-developed tools for measuring depression, such as the Beck inventory, do not tend to distinguish between justified misery and clinical depression. [...]

DONNA TARTT, LETTER TO JONATHAN LETHEM, DATED JANUARY 24, 1983 (DURING WINTER BREAK): I am now in Washington with The Man [Paul McGloin]. We have a nice little apartment in an old townhouse near Capitol Hill and all is well. . . . The raciest thing that’s happened to us was when we overheard a museum guard in the National Gallery mutter, “More faggots” as we walked into the room. (I was wearing a baggy sweater and trousers, no makeup, and my customary shapeless gray tweed coat. Perhaps I did look like a boy. . . .) It pleased Paul no end.

TODD O’NEAL: Paul and Donna weren’t boyfriend and girlfriend. They were boyfriend and boy. She had a uniform. Black loafers, khaki pants—boys’ pants, not girls’—J. Press–type button-down, necktie, blue blazer with brass buttons, and hair in this funky little asexual bob. She looked like she came straight out of an English university. She and Paul were like Oxonian homosexuals or something. I once asked him, “What kind of relationship do you have?” And he said, “Well, that’s very funny, because she wants me to call her ‘my lad.’ ”
