chengning is the perfect ship bc everyone jc loves ends up dead so he can save himself the trouble and just fuck the corpse guy. already dead, already aware of all of jc's shixiong issues, saved jin ling's life, this is just logical

imagine dealing w an international crisis involving precious artifacts and someone is like ‘don’t worry I know a guy’ and it’s a dorky connecticut college professor named henry who slips into his slutsona and suddenly he’s capable of saving the world w the power of his whip & fedora

you don’t know where the guy is. you don’t know where the guy is going. but you do know he’s on the case w a 98% success rate and his tits are out

I said what I said!

It’s impossible to argue with anything above.

Honestly, a slutsona that you only slip on when you're not talking to students is a slutsona that's being appropriately applied.

In hindsight it's very insulting to be told that flunking out of college due to adhd is actually "quite common"

just like, if there's a history at your institution of disabled kids not being able to make it you realise that's your fault right. like why don't you fucking do something about it. i guess they tried to do something about it with me and it failed so they let me go. crazy. nice work. why should we try to do any better.

only 5% of people with adhd who go to college finish a degree. FUCKING. FIVE!!! PERCENT!!!!!!!!!!!

that should disgust and enrage you.

if any other demographic of students had a 95% failure rate, we would be demanding reform and studies to understand why that’s happening

when i was at my first university, trying to get accommodations for my ADHD, they just kept asking me what accommodations i wanted, and refused to answer when i would ask what was available to me. how the Hell am i supposed to know what i can have? what’s available???? also, i don’t know!!!! i’m an adhd sufferer, not a fucking disability expert for the fucking college, unlike you, DISABILITY EXPERT WHO WORKS FOR THE COLLEGE.

but because the us is OBSESSED with making sure no one gets anything “”for free””, she literally would not tell me what my options were until i broke down in tears and asked her why she was refusing to help me. and then she did a big sigh, like i was fucking up her entire career by *checks notes* asking the disability center in my university to help me, a disabled student

at the second uni i went to, i tried to explain to a dean that i was literally two gen eds that had nothing to do with my degree away from graduating and that i was burnt out and broke and exhausted and suicidal and i just needed to be able to finish my degree without the gen eds. and this. fucking. guy. looked me right in my face and said in the most patronizing tone he could muster “if you can’t handle it, then maybe college just isn’t for you.” keep in mind that up until that semester, i had been an honor student who made Dean’s List every semester and didn’t get below Bs. if it hadn’t been for my mental breakdown, i would have graduated cum laude, maybe even summa cum laude.

but this dean of students looked a disabled person right in the face and said well i guess you just can’t do it, short bus

Pulled these from a couple articles really quick but yeah the statistics are not kind. I remember writing a scathing essay about my issues with ADHD and college as part of an assignment for academic probation. I got back an email calling me entitled and lazy. Somehow, this thread helps me feel a lot better. I still have about a semester of school unfinished that I’m unsure if I’ll finish but… yeah. Makes me feel better to know it’s not just me.

PSA: The Job Accommodation Network maintains a searchable database of accommodation suggestions for a wide variety of disabilities.

The full database can be accessed here and the ADHD page is here. The full database can be filtered by disability, by limitation, by work-related function, by topic, and by accommodation. Many of these accommodations are applicable to academic settings as well as the workplace.

Here are the section headers for ADHD accommodations ideas to give an overview of what the page contains - this post would become Do You Love the Color of the Accommodation if I attempted to list them all here

The ADHD page linked above also includes case examples and strategies for determining what sort of accommodations might be necessary. More broadly, the JAN website as a whole is a treasure trove of information related to the Americans with Disabilities Act and resources for both individuals and employers.

Oh fuck that's really nice, I will read it

Also just heard a podcast interview with a software developer who had good suggestions

The head of disability accommodations at my college just kept ablesplaining to me that “accommodations are to level the playing field, not give you an advantage,” and that her job is to “protect the school’s rights” rather than help disabled students. The only accommodations they would offer me were 1. extra time on tests, and 2. an alternative test-taking location - neither of which I needed. I ended up getting (most of) what I actually needed by unofficially asking the individual professors, but it should have been legally protected.

5%... I cant believe I made it... I have never been good at anything in my life just... determined. How the hell did I grit my teeth and finish college with those sort of odds...

Courtesy name's?

Okay just going to ask but I've previously seen posts before about how the other mdzs characters call Jiang cheng/wanyin by his birth name rather than courtesy name and was curios about that because I've heard that's extremely disrespectful (and intimate???) so is that a canon thing? or is there reasoning behind it that I'm unaware of?

Jiang Wanyin isn't used until (I believe) JC introduces himself to LXC during the Cloud Recesses study arc. After this, JWY used by LWJ to WWX twice; by JGS when he's "quoting" WWX during the WWX Killed A Lot of People, Jiang Cheng! meeting; by WWX when JC goes to the Burial Mounds for their breakup; and by JGY to XY in the Villainous Friends extra.

Before JWY is used for the first time, JC is called JC by WWX and several gossipers. Doylist explanations for this are that either MXTX didn't create Wanyin until she wrote the chapter where JC introduces himself, or she forgot to use the courtesy name when strangers referred to him. She was writing all of this in college over the course of five months; something that lends credence to these Doylist possibilities is the fact that she forgot to reveal LSZ's identity until the end of the novel. When you consider the Watsonian explanation for that is "LWJ chose not to tell WWX or WN something that would bring them great comfort," yet 99% of this fandom chooses not to believe that says anything about LWJ's character, it's fair to say that deciding "JC isn't as disrespected as the use of his personal name by commoners makes it appear" isn't entirely unfounded.

At the same time, MXTX was specific about WWX being disrespected when commoners called him Wei Ying or even only Wei. Since the gossipers were insulting JC at the time, you are equally free to interpret the use of his personal name as targeted disrespect for JC. It's up to your own interpretation.

We get a few instances of JC's perspective in the novel. Unlike WWX, JC's narration uses his personal name, rather than his courtesy name. Unlike WWX, pet names for JC are based on his personal name. However, "Xian" means Envy, while "Yin" means chant/moan. Because of this, JYL calling her little brother Yinyin or a-Yin would be kind of awkward. We do not know JC's personal thoughts about his name. Any headcanons are equally valid.

JC is infantilized throughout the novel. This is repeatedly done by WWX, because shixiong rights. The novel opens with gossipers implying that the only reason JC let WWX get away with everything for so long is because they were childhood sweethearts. In the handful of paragraphs from WRH's perspective, JC is referred to as "little sect leader Jiang." WWX is able to convince WQ and WN that the definite best option is to operate on JC without his consent and then lie to JC forever because he can't be trusted to make his own choices or handle the truth. In the WWX Killed A Lot of People, Jiang Cheng! meeting, NMJ scolds JC for being unfilial by not seeking complete revenge; JGS speaks to him like a misguided youth for still believing in WWX. After the meeting, JGY and LXC gossip about how JC reacted sooo emotionally. Cringe! Imagine having feelings when someone you care about is being targeted by the mob.

So... as a celebrity, Jiang Cheng definitely gets the worst spin in the cultivation world.

My personal opinion is based on celebrity gossip, public opinion, and their relation to reality. I personally believe that Jiang Cheng could do everything right, but people outside YMJ would still disrespect him. Gossip is based on what's fun to share, not what's true.

Therefore, when I write outsiders gossiping about JC, I also have them use his personal name as a sign of disrespect.

Thank you so much :D

I'm really glad you answered as this has helped me out greatly!

I really loved all the points you made with references to the novel, and the mention of how people throughout the novel seem to infantize him was definitely spot on, especially considering it's all from wwx's pov.

"So… as a celebrity, Jiang Cheng definitely gets the worst spin in the cultivation world."

So true... (Please don't hate me for this but it feels like many of the villains or heroes get 'Brittney-ified' by the cultivation world gossip chain... iykyk)

it is again interesting he distinct differences wwx and jc seem to have with their names though... because based on what you pointed out it seems like wwx has more 'attachment' to it, as in he doesn't want other people using it, than Jiang Cheng who seems to not necessarily want people using it, but takes less disrespect from it. Which could be false considering most of the book is from wwx's pov? however I feel like if he did take insult wwx would have mentioned it so I'm a little unsure...

something i did recently find out though is that his courtesy name Wanyin, apparently means "Late lament' or 'Evening lament' (if my sources are correct) which I've been told is a very dark and ominous name, so maybe after everything he doesn't want to use it because he feels internally like part of everything was his fault, hence the warning of a courtesy name? idk

I haven't heard the idea about the common people/ cultivators deliberately using it as a means of disrespect before so it's really interesting that you added it since it makes sense to me, especially considering he's like 'the big bad demonic cultivator killer' as shown by the many rumors around him...

anyway... thanks again for the insight! I really appreciate it! :)

I'm glad that helped! Ultimately, it's all about the version of the story that you created as you read the novel. In the end, we read the same words, but different stories—so have fun.

Oh, Wanyin is actually quite a lovely, contemplative, morose, mature name. It's taken from a line of poetry about reciting lines of poetry by yourself at night in autumn. His courtesy name is one of the reasons that JC is given autumn and moon motifs.

You're definitely right that WWX would have made a point about JC disliking his courtesy name. I'd never thought of that.

Another fun name note for a fellow grief appreciator: Yanli (detest separation) and Hen Bie (hate parting), JC's song from the live action, basically mean the same thing. I think it was a lovely nod by the live action team to how much of JC's adult life was shaped by loving his big sister.
