my dad likes to call the stretches of time where you’re not creating “dreaming periods” and says that they’re meant to allow you to absorb all of the beauty, life, and inspiration from the things around you so that when you’re able to create again, you will have fanned your spark back into a flame. sometimes its hard to see those moments as anything but stagnation, but he always says that they’re natural and healthy and needed—things that should be embraced rather than feared.
瞌睡中…
i like to think that when xue yang was beaten and left for dead by the jin clan, his voice was permanently altered. in the book, a-qing describes XY's voice as being damaged, clearly as a result of his injuries. this is the voice that XY has when xiao xingchen finds him, and it stays with him throughout the years in yi city.
even if XY gets exposed, even if he drops his act, he will never sound like XY to XXC. XXC will only hear chengmei. chengmei, who had been his companion. chengmei, whom he trusted. chengmei, whom he had loved.
something to be said for how jgy is seen as using methods that are uniquely dishonorable due to their premeditation/cunning against opponents who by no fault of his are more physically powerful than him and have been attempting to hurt or kill him to much less criticism in-universe and out. something that rhymes with "women who kill their abusive male partners get harsher sentences than men who beat their wives to death"
oh yes i think you are completely right about this.
"uniquely dishonourable" is a very key point. the rub for a lot of people, both characters in the world and fans in the community, is less that jgy killed nmj, and more that he lied about it. there's a timeline where nmj wins this protracted fight and successfully kills jgy and maybe he then kills himself to atone for the fact that he aggressed against his life-saving debtor, but even if he doesn't, nobody will ever resurrect wwx to hunt nmj down for revenge.
violence that is public and physical is legitimised, and violence that is hidden is considered evil twice over! and i'm not even saying that's a bad way to conceptualise violence; "while your opponent's back is turned" is a big no-no in most cultures for a good reason.
buuut violence that mdzs society considers honourable or legitimate is completely out of reach for jgy. he does not have strong cultivation or great physical strength or even the social status of "righteous war hero and sect leader" that would justify his violence in the eyes of society. he CANNOT beat nmj in a fair fight, because they cannot have a fair fight, because jgy would always be at a shocking, unjustifiable disadvantage. nmj doesn't really even think about this, or he might realise that attacking jgy the way he does is actually pretty dishonourable.
so jgy is forced to reach for those dishonourable and dishonest methods of his! what a well-designed conflict
something that makes shi quingxuan's corrupted ascension to godhood more painful is that sqx was a good god.
beloved by their followers, kind, charitable, and was always trying to do good things. sqx was a genuinely good person, who stuck up for xie lian, and didn't automatically assume the worsts of hua cheng despite what other heavenly officials said.
shi qingxuan being a much better god than many of the others who earned or "deserved" their spots, makes their fate sadder to me
#honestly i expect part of the reason it's unusual to be a god as good as sqx#is because... a personality that IS generous and kind and giving and stuff#is not usually accompanied by the kind of dogged obsessiveness needed to become overwhelmingly skilled in any area#and therefore lead to godhood (tags by @coldwind-shiningstars)
If you could pick one character you could save from their fate in Yi-city, who would it be?
*shouting from the rooftops* SONG ZICHEN
Listen, LISTEN, his ending makes me SO SAD, i can’t think about it for to long. He’s by far the character that has it worst by the end of the story. He’s has NOTHING. He’s DEAD and IMMORTAL, he lost his entire family, he has no home, he lost xingchen, his voice, and he’s a literal corpse?? He has nothing but regrets and what-ifs to carry FOREVER. Like, it’s so much worse than just being dead. He has no where to go, no person he can grow to be, he’s frozen in time in this dead body to try and save the soul of his friend, and to APPOLOGIZE?? Because he never even had the chance to make amends before everything went to shit???
And I can’t stress enough how he didn’t do anything to deserve this. My guy literally made two mistakes in his life - two very understandable and human mistakes at that! He lashed out at a moment of imense grief, and he confronted xue yang when he should’ve talked to xingchen. Not the worst things a person could do by any stretch of the imagination, in fact, they are soooo human it breaks me - two mistakes, and he got basically eternal misery for it. It’s the most tragic of all to me, it really just hits me in a way that I think it’s fundamental to why I’m as obsessed with this tragedy as I am.
And after eeeeeeeeverything that was done to him, after having his family, his best friend/soulmate, his LIFE, his own personhood violently taken away, turned into a zombie-slave for seven years, what does he do? He kills xue yang cleanly, doesn’t take pleasure in revenge and doesn’t make him suffer (if anything, grants him a more merciful death than if he was to bleed to death), then he takes xingchen’s soul and sword and walks off to try and help people, even though he has NOTHING. He’s one of the most noble characters in the show?? He’s resilient and he’s so good and I want to cover him a blanket and tell him somehow things will get better…
I… I need him to be happy idk what to tell you. All fix-its for him forever and ever, if he’s not getting a better ending then I’m not interested. He DESERVES so so much better.

"You don't know me. I'm not the same person anymore."
"That's okay. I'll get to know you again."
so far I've only seen the "haha jun wu was so funny putting fengqing in charge of the same domain" take and yes it is objectively a hilarious thing for him to have done but has anyone considered he did that hoping they'd fail? i mean look at yin yu and quan yizhen. being in charge of the same domain didn't work out so well for them. I'm betting jun wu was hoping something equally devastating would befall fengqing so that when xie lian eventually ascended again he'd be without his old friends and all alone. put the two known for hating each other together and let them fight over the south and surely they'll end up destroying each other right? well jokes on jun wu fengqing are the worst kind of codependant and they ain't going anywhere

you are so so correct about everything i am shaking your hand
Tbh I don't know that Jun Wu was specifically counting on or expecting FengQing to fight or kill each other, or indeed expecting any kind of outcome in particular. I think we underestimate the amount of shit he does just to entertain himself
