Talking with writers online

Their stories: Amazing grammar, soaring vocabulary, beautiful imagery and prose which flows like a river.

In chats: no capitalisation or punctuation, swears like a sailor, misspellings everywhere, acronyms and abbreviations every five words, idek

I have never related to a statement more than โ€œdo you know how much braining it takes to make words go?โ€

still amazed that like. 7 years later. this post is still going. it gets like 5-12 notes a day

itโ€™s a heritage post, is what it is.

Dazai: Yokohama is just 2 days away.

Dazai: I can practically see her on the horizon. And finally I will be reunited with my beautiful love Kuniki-

Dazai:โ€ฆOh my god I forgot to do the dishes before I left!

Chuuya: The hells wrong with you-hey!

Dazai: Chuuya! Chuuya give me the controls! Give me the controls! I canโ€™t go back home!

Chuuya: Just for that Iโ€™m gonna take a shortcut.

wait do people read first person stories and think they're the ones in the story???

Saw people talking about not liking first person, which is fair, but their reasoning was like "I would not do that" and I don't understand that mindset.

First person stories are still about a character. A character making their own decisions. First person isn't about you???? At least I thought it wasn't. What am I missing? I've always seen first person as just a more in-depth look into a character's mind and stricter POV. Not as a reader stand-in.

I see first person stories like I'm sitting down across from the narrator getting the wildest tea imaginable

Most accurate way to read a first person story

second person stories are about you

Second person stories are not about you. They're about Harrowhark Nonagesimus

reblog to give your headache to elon musk instead

Iโ€™d just like to point out the growth in this post has mostly coincided with elonโ€™s public spiral downward and Iโ€™d like to think weโ€™re all a small part of that

bro canโ€™t think because heโ€™s just got a rager of a migraine 24/7

yes I would like to give elon musk my menstrual pain. I think he deserves it

Reblog to also give Elon Musk your menstrual pain.

Look I love unconditional devotion love stories as much as the next person, but there's really something so deliciously raw about conditional devotion.

I have served you and I have loved you for decades, but I will not give up my principles for you. You cut out part of my heart and took it with you down that path that you insist on walking, but you walk it alone. Even when the bleeding, gaping hole you left in my chest kills me, I will not follow you.

me everytime one of my seemingly non-specific homoerotic text posts breaks containment

We never really talked about it but The Ugly Ducking that grew up to be a beautiful swan was still probably pretty fugly from a duckโ€™s perspective

Like that story isnโ€™t about an ugly duckling that grew up sexy, itโ€™s a fucking swan was judged as a duck and hated itself as a duck until it found out it wasnโ€™t a duck and stopped trying to be a duck.

The actual ducks in the neighborhood were probably still looking around at perfectly normal swans like โ€œdamn, look at those busted ass ducksโ€

This is pretty important, actually. The good ending is finding the other swans, not tearing yourself to pieces trying to impress the ducks.

Concept: Atsushi with looser morals.

Atsushi was raised in an environment where the kind die first. A place where he was taught the only person you can trust is yourself.

Atsushi learned how to survive a point system that never rewarded him. He would do other kids chores, take their punishments in exchange for food.

He was raised in hell and it meant that he learned to survive by any means necessary.

Atsushi stops Junichiro and passes his entrance exam because Dazai and Kunikida were kind to him. They gave him food, shelter and saved him when no one else ever has.

He doesnโ€™t get involved until theyโ€™re put in danger. In his eyes he was paying them back for it and the job was completely unexpected.

Obviously Atsushi accepts because where else was he gonna go with no qualifications and an ability he canโ€™t control.

He does pay Kunikida back for the 30 bowls of tea on rice even if the other says he doesnโ€™t need too.

As if not paying his debts ever felt like an option to him.

Atsushi doesnโ€™t think heโ€™s a good person. He follows the law because the Agency (sometimes) does. He helps protect the city because the Agency does.

And working with the Agency gives him shelter and money so that he can eat and thus live.

Atsushi doesnโ€™t think he belongs with them. Heโ€™s a coward and in the end he only really looks out for himself. In his eyes heโ€™s not a good person.

Definitely not someone worth their kindness nor their belief and trust.

Dazai and Kunikida making important decisions via rock, paper, scissors is my favourite thing.

It either goes from taking out the trash (when Dazai is not in the trash can) or stopping bank robbers.

Never in between.

I did quickly go through the manga, with the help of the fanwiki, to see how much that "Atsushi's orphanage headmaster visions have been caused by Q" twist holds up (as sometimes, new plans come up as you write, especially if your series is over 10 years old)

In the first chapter, Atsushi has a flashback of the orphanage staff kicking him out, but they do not have individual identities. The first apparition of the headmaster as himself is when Atsushi is under the influence of Dogra Magra, in chapter 25, "Q":

His next apparition is in chapter 28, when Atsushi is being held in the Moby Dick, right before Lucy comes in and chooses to help him (note: that scene also compares Atsushi's abuse is to another person's, Lucy's.)

After that, there's chapter 39, "Portrait of a Father", where Atsushi doesn't hallucinate him, but we learn about who the man was to Atsushi, and witness his funeral.

His next hallucination is in chapter 52, at the very end of the Cannibalism arc. He explains to Akutagawa that the headmaster has been been haunting him less since (the final fight on) the Moby Dick, but has been silent since the funeral.

There are a few more mentions of the headmaster that I haven't mentioned, but a very notable one is that Atsushi saw becoming stronger and his upcoming fight against Akutagawa as a way to free himself from the headmaster's influence, much like Akutagawa saw it as a way to gain Dazai's approval.

I don't think we see Atsushi hallucinating the headmaster after this until chapter 122, but the Dazai hallucinations start showing up in chapter 63, so really not that long after the previous one. The next Dazai ones I could find were in chapters 78, 105 and 121.

The conclusion is therefore that Atsushi hallucinating the headmaster has been a very active and purposeful part of his journey as a character since very early on. It started manifesting after Atsushi's breakdown while under the influence of Q's ability, and it's taken various approaches as Atsushi faced different struggles, but it's always been there.

While wearing Dazai's face, the hallucination was given more credit in Atsushi's eyes, but its words were barely less sharp and hurtful. However, they did tend to push Atsushi into acting, rather than cowering and giving up.

We're seeing Atsushi heal in real time, no matter how messy it is, and I'm so proud of him.
