an argument between jedi grammarians

let there also be hope.  it may be a grim, thin hope, an arthurian sword at sunset, but let us know that we do not live in vain. — 🌲

Well met, traveller! You have arrived at the scrapbook of Braigwen, a forest cræture of some variety. I post about: Star Wars, Tolkien, Star Trek, nature, folklore, linguistics, fantasy, history, & other things that amuse me. Currently in the depths of Conclave (book+film, not rl event) special interest to the extent of establishing a resource page.

Sometimes there will be a rare serious post — if you do not want to see these, blacklist “braigwen gets negative” and “current events.”

Most images are un-ID'd, with sincere apologies — it's an access needs clash, as I rarely have the energy, typing ability, & opportunity at the same time, & this is, as aforementioned, my personal scrapbook rather than something I expect to be treated as “regular” social media. Posts with IDs are tagged “captioned”.

  • icons i’ve made here; free to use on tumblr or with credit elsewhere
  • edits & art tagged as “my edits” and “my art,” respectively
  • ao3 here
  • neocities here
  • swtor sideblog here.

oh my GOD Vincent arriving at the Vatican jetlagged exhausted stressed out of his mind. He's not on the list and he's really just slipping in right under the line because they're officially sequestered from 6. He's come all this way and he's about to be refused entry because nobody knows who the fuck he is and he's smart enough to recognise that the security staff are preparing to have him officially escorted off the premises. Cardinal Lawrence is off trying to speak to Woźniak so nobody can find him to confirm. Mandorff's the only one around, and luckily he comes over to de-escalate the situation because finally Vincent can try to explain. Yes he is a cardinal. No there are no records, he was created in pectore. Yes he is the archbishop of Kabul. Yes, that Kabul. No, he's not Afghan, he's Mexican. Mandorff wants to ask more questions but security are getting antsy and this poor man is dead on his feet, and there's just some gut instinct that tells him that no impostor would show up like this, that an impostor would be better prepared. And for a man who's devoted enough of his life to studying the scriptures, there's just something about turning away an exhausted, luggageless man without any proper documentation to his name that doesn't sit quite right. The first act of faith for the conclave.

hello Conclave fandom I need help from you wonderful people. sometime recently (like in the last two weeks) I remember seeing that someone had compiled a Conclave timeline where (iirc) they merged book and movie canon and created a comprehensive timeline of events (and including Benítez past (when he was appointed, when he had the surgery, when he met with the late HF, etc)).

I don't recall if this was in a Tumblr post or if someone had made and shared a google doc? the point is it would be really helpful to have a timeline like that for the fic I'm writing rn and for the life of me I can't find it, and believe me I've looked everywhere.

if someone knows what I'm talking about, or if someone else has made a similar timeline, I would really appreciate it if you could share it with me

thank you -a writer trying for accuracy in the timeline in events to make up for the vast inaccuracies about the church and the vatican lol

they should make a little thing pop up before you go to post a joke abt catullus 16 that's like question 1. how is catullus using, playing with, subverting, and/or reenforcing roman ideas about masculinity, manhood, & sexual dynamics in this poem? question 2. what is catullus saying about the power dynamics between the poet, the subject of the poem, and the reader? how is he making use of the medium of poetry to make this point? connect your answer to question 1. question 3. how does this poem fit into the thematic context of catullus' other poetry?

I don't think you understand how Italian is the "Stai bene? (Are you well?)" from Lawrence and Tedesco answering "Mah, no one is ever well at our age". I'll try to explain, it's like an italian thing, especially if you're from the South. That if somebody pays you a compliment or hints at things going well for you, you downplay it because by complimenting you they're "cursing" you. It's a folkloristic thing, the kind of thing that my grandmother would say to me: beware of people complimenting you and be careful not to share the good things going on with you, because the moment you do people might "curse" you. Very difficult to put this thing into words, but Goffredo Tedesco I see you. I see you a Patriarch of Venice on the road to papacy and still believing in grandmother's (pagan) superstitions because that's how religion, especially for old people, works in Italy. Again, difficult to put into words, but I know in my heart that he is answering Lawrence's question the same way my grandmother would answer it. I see you outrunning malocchio, Cardinal Tedesco. And I respect it.
