One of the fun things about living out here is the abundance of rocks

There are no rocks in new orleans (swamp, mud) but here, i fill my pockets with rocks everywhere i go.

I have a little hobby rock tumbler that I’m using for the first time and so far everything is gorgeous gorgeous

Heres a before photo of everything i put in there. Will take an after when it’s done!

OH MY GD YOURE THE PERSON WHO PAINTED THAT BIRD AND THE LEAF— WITNESS WITNESS

For some reason that painting has stuck with me since I first saw it; I saved it and think about it sometimes. So when I saw your most recent appetite painting, bells started ringing in my mind about the way you paint birds’ faces, the edges of their wings, your long brushstrokes. I’m so happy I stumbled across your art again! You’re an inspiration <3

Oh my god that means so much to me, thank you so much!

I carried your words with me all day yesterday, basking in their warmth. Right before I opened this ask I got a rejection notification from a residency I was really hoping for, so this was like being offered a hand up after getting knocked down. Thank you ♥️

@ ALL PEOPLE OF KENTUCKY

This bill would weaken water protections in the state to be equal to federal standards.

The federal standards were recently weakened so that pollution is regulated only in "navigable waters." Polluting small streams, creeks, ponds, wetlands, and groundwater is fine, according to our Supreme Court.

This is, of course, ridiculous, because the small streams and creeks flow into the big streams and rivers. And lots of people in rural areas use wells for water, so the groundwater is water that people drink.

Kentucky's freshwater ecosystems are the most biodiverse in the world only excepting Alabama and Tennessee. That's right, in the WORLD.

Call your reps and yell at them. And anybody you know has a well, tell them how the government wants to poison it.

Appetite 3

I've been trying to get more comfortable working in dark pigments - starting with an almost all black panel and making the image by pulling paint away. It's a really fun challenge to find color combinations that can look as deep dark as possible while remaining dynamic. Hard to photograph though!

This is third (or fourth?) piece I've done on the theme of guts and viscera and appetites. A chapter in Trickster Makes This World by Lewis Hyde on intestines and appetites inspired these pieces - it talks about digestion and and eating and shitting being the thing that makes us alive, mortal, able to change and grow and connect to the earth.

“As you read a book word by word and page by page, you participate in its creation, just as a cellist playing a Bach suite participates, note by note, in the creation, the coming-to-be, the existence, of the music. And, as you read and re-read, the book of course participates in the creation of you, your thoughts and feelings, the size and temper of your soul.”

— Ursula K. Le Guin

this means that every person brings themselves to every piece of art. it means we all experience a different piece of art. each time we return to a story we are creating a different story. rereading is good actually

Giving it a try

I've decided to give patreon a try - I know I'm not great at posting often, but I think I might try to post more behind the scenes stuff over there. I don't want to make any promises until I get a handle on how it works, but if you feel like throwing some support my way that would be very very lovely.
