Let’s talk about Jason Grace.

He was taken from his family at age 2.

Now I work with toddlers, so let me tell you

At two years old, he would have just started talking. He would know simple words and phrases.

At two years old he would have just started potty training.

Jason was two years old when he was taken from the care of humans into the care of wolves. Lupa was a wolf mother, she probably didn’t worry about things like potty training or speaking English.

Based on the number of stripes on his arm he was a full member of the 12th legion by age three.

Let’s say he was inducted pretty much as soon as he arrived, that means he was with Lupa for a year.

Jason spent a very important developmental year with wolves.

so when he arrived at Camp Jupiter. He would barely be able to talk, and he probably wouldn’t remember what a toilet is, much less how to use one,

and they decide to burn a tattoo on his arm and and put a sword in his hand.

Jason Grace was expected to not only serve in an army, but be in a leadership position before he could use a dam toilet.

When Jason Grace wakes up, he's surrounded by friends. He's holding hands with a beautiful girl who says that they're in love, and there’s a boy with a wild grin who says they’re best friends. Jason doesn’t know what’s going on, but he knows he's surrounded by people who care for him and want to help him.

When Percy Jackson wakes up, he's almost completely alone. His only connection is a wolf that seems to be judging his every move as it decides his worth. He's fighting for his life and desperately searching to find a place that would take him in and accept him.

When Jason and Percy were switched, they didn't just have their physical selves swapped. They had their lives swapped. Jason got to believe that someone loved him, and Percy got to experience what it was like to have no one.

this is a sweet moment from leo but I have no idea why he thinks this line. it's not true. like in every way it is not true. he's either known piper exactly as long as he's known jason or he's known piper four months longer than jason if we operate under the assumption that leo and piper were always friends and knew each other at school regardless of hera's memory tampering (a matter which is left somewhat ambiguous in the books, but I personally consider likely). it's kind of a weird take that lowkey downplays the leo&piper friendship and the only way I can think to explain it is if leo is still holding on to false memories of jason at the wilderness school

this is one of several reasons why I don't love how the jason&leo friendship is developed throughout hoo. at least piper is shown seriously grappling with the fact that her memories of jason are false and evaluating the idealized image she has of him in her mind versus the "real" jason she's getting to know. that's a really important thing for her to be doing! but leo is almost never shown pondering the falsity of his memories of jason. and honestly considering the fact that leo is characterized as a guy who actively avoids thinking about painful things in order to keep himself from breaking down, this writing has the inadvertent effect of making it seem like maybe leo doesn't think about it because he just doesn't want to. and I don't think I have to say why that isn't a good way to manage one's complicated interpersonal relationships

but I think the real reason why leo isn't shown dwelling on this much is simply because romances and friendships are not regarded as matters of equal importance in rick's writing lol. rick spends more time addressing this major conflict in jason/piper's romance because he just doesn't think it matters as much that leo, a guy who grew up without any friends, is now faced with the reality that his best friend is not who he thought he was. amnesia plots are fun and the material with the lost trio is so fascinating but god I do not care for how rick went about resolving all of these intermingling complications in their dynamics that started in tlh

i just saw a post on here that was asking why reyna "didn't do more for new rome" in toa, obvi im not gonna talk to that person directly bc the entire post was about "why toa would have been better if it had taken place 10 years later" even though that makes no sense with any of the narritive given re : python, but this just RANKLES us.

like like like

imagine this

you just got done fighting in a war you didn't want to start but you damn well helped end. you go home. your barely have time to repair damages before communications between you and the community you just finished a war against on positive terms goes off. then zombies show up.

and you spend. Long, Grueling months fighting these undead beasts. things that turn your soldiers, your friends against you in the worst way possible.

But you have to keep what's left of your soldiers fighting.

and when they're gone? haven't you given enough? don't you deserve rest? what more can you do for them now, when you've reached the end of what you can? the only thing that held you hear was the expectation that you must have a partner, and the loyalty you had to your people in a time of hardship.

but now that expectation is gone, and the hardship is no more.

what else are you supposed to give?

what else did you want from her?

i keep thinking about the tragedy that is bianca di angelo. she's only twelve. forever. she made one choice for herself and yes it got her killed but also she was a kid in a messy situation who just wanted some freedom, some control over her own life. she wanted to be an individual, to be herself, to be someone more that nico's sister. and she dies. and that's all she's known as. nico's dead sister. the only person who remains who truly knew her is nico. and he's consumed by his grief, and his love, and at one point his resentment, for his sister. but none of this is about bianca di angelo. it's all nico's dead sister. percy's main reason to grieve bianca is also mainly because he made a promise to nico. when talking about her death, no one thinks about how she felt. why did she do that? what was she like?
