Hawaii Five-0 nickname usage per episode part 4:

SEASON FOUR buddy (4.01, 4.06, 4.07, 4.19 x4) superman (4.01) Uncle Steve (4.02, 4.06, 4.07) jerk (4.02, 4.10) pal (4.02, 4.14, 4.19) Dr Phil (4.03) complete animal (4.03) my partner (4.04 x2) babe (4.04) angry old man (4.06) mean ogre / disgusting hairy ogre/ dopey ogre / greedy selfish ogre with major control issues (4.07) softie (4.07, 4.10) animal (4.07) man (4.09 x3, 4.19 x3, 4.22) this man (4.11) putz (4.11) Danno (4.12, 4.19) family (4.15) an amazing travel companion (4.18) the guy I know and love (4.18) my boy (4.19) my friend (4.19) dark cloud that never goes away (4.20) Our bonus nickname in this round is ‘Scully’ as given to Danny by Jerry in both 4.03 and 4.16.

Also, I took the liberty of including the ogre references from 4.07 because it’s clearly all about Steve so it counts in my book. Episodes with no nicknames include 4.05 (personal opinion of it being a terrible episode aside, it’s Catherine based and lacking in much Danny),   4.08 and 4.13 (both of which have no Danny in them), 4.16, 4.17 (surprising a little, but the boys spend a lot of time apart due to the Danny storyline) and 4.21 (not surprising due to separate storylines the majority of the episode).

The episode with the most (a whopping 8) is 4.19, this will come as no shock to anyone considering the entire episode is everyone favourite trope: 'locked together in a confined space’.

For the first time, we have a nickname in the finale episode, however, it isn’t the typical drama filled cliffhanger we got used to, it was more like a run-of-the-mill episode and therefore isn’t out of the ordinary.

What IS insane is the distinct lack of 'Danno’ being used this season. Only twice and in neither situation was it used in conjunction with the phrase 'book 'em’ unless I truly missed it going at speed. The only time I heard a 'book 'em danno’ all season was in 4.03 and Danny said it himself. Please tell me if I missed it because that seems kinda shocking! I only have two 'Danno’s listed and that just feels wrong… though we did get about a million references to 'Danno’ from Grace.

There’s only one use of babe this season and it’s from Danny to Steve.

Most popular are the basic 'buddy’ and 'man’. As per usual, I didn’t count the number of full first name usages or last names or full titles.

Point of note, Danny always talks about how he prefers to be called 'Danny’. While his mother visits she continually calls him 'Daniel’, so it’s not likely that his reasons come from family (though highly possible that he considers 'Daniel’ to be what he gets called when he’s in trouble *g*).

Hawaii Five-0 nickname usage per episode part 3:

SEASON 3: Danno (3.01, 3.03, 3.08, 3.09, 3.21) Boo-boo (3.01) Kreskin (3.02) The Amazing McGarrett (3.02) Mr Negativity (3.02) buddy (3.03, 3.06 x2, 3.08, 3.12, 3.14, 3.17, 3.22) Martha Stewart (3.03) man (3.03 x2) danger magnet (3.03) skipper (3.03) pal (3.06) babe (3.07, 3.15) my friend (3.08) scarface (3.15) my boy (3.20) Emily Post (3.21) bonus nicknames in this round go to Ed Asner’s August March who refers to the boys as ‘Garage Sale Bookends’. Special mention also goes to episode 3.19 and Steve’s repeat of the name 'Ivana Kiss’ while flirting openly with Danny ;) As you can see from the list, the first third of the season still had plenty of usage of the popular nicknames along with some fun new ones. After the first 8 episodes it all drops off with only episodes 12, 14 and 15 and 21 truly giving us much more. As with seasons 1 and 2, the last episode doesn’t have any.

In other words, as the quality of the season took a downturn, as did the nicknames quota. The facts speak for themselves, but when Steve and Danny don’t spend much time together (too much Doris and Catherine storyline, less mcdanno) then there’s no opportunity.

Most popular of the season is 'buddy’ and only five uses of 'Danno’ by Steve all year. Both uses of babe this season are from Danny. The most nicknames filled episode of 3.03 (not a shock since it was the major mcdanno episode of the season).

Your bonus nickname in this round is: Jersey. A name given to Danny by Toast, Kamekona and Kavika… but not Steve.

So, I only counted uses of nicknames that are not their surnames or full first names (so I didn’t count the endless ‘McGarrett’, 'Steven’ and 'Daniel’ usages).

The two most popular nicknames being 'Danno’ (obviously and only coming one way on that one) and babe (which both of them use for each other, which easily ups the count). The surprising amount and variety in nicknames makes me think McDanno deserve some sort of partners award, maybe only in second place to Shawn and Gus.

Point of note: out of the 5 instances of 'babe’, two were from Steve (one is, admittedly, debatable as it is hard to hear), three were from Danny. And out of the 2 instances of 'baby’, they had one each.

Three episodes had no nicknames: 1.13, 1.21 and, surprisingly (to me), 1.24.

Episodes with the most nicknames: 1.01 and 1.14. both were overflowing with nicknamey goodness.

“Three years and we’ve still only gone to second base,” cracks O’Loughlin, to which Caan replies, “No comment.”

“No comment” my ass. I know something lascivious was floating around in that pretty blonde head.
