he does !! jason is SO interesting psychologically and i know demigods all have a similar hero complex but he is different to me. i find it fascinating that after the fighting was done, after he broke up with piper, jason decided to hole himself up at a boarding school in pasadena and not go back to camp or even new rome. and i really believe it’s cause he thinks he doesn’t have anyone.
he struggles with choosing the cj/chb identity in hoo but honestly, i think the real problem is he struggles with having identity period. his entire life was about serving something or someone and then after that was gone i think he sort of shut down. and when he got the inclination from the oracle his time was coming to an end, he kind of succumbs to it. not that he went into that fight with desire to die, but he knew it was going to be either him or piper and because he views himself as more tool than person, he sure as shit wasn’t going to let it be piper. one, he loved her. two, he wouldn’t be a good soldier if he let her die. so there was only one option. sacrificing himself was his final act of service and it actually breaks my heart that that is most likely how he saw it.
he didn’t even seem to have any independent dreams or goals. he was working on shrines for capitol hill. there was no Him outside of the myth world. and in the aftermath of his death, we’re led to believe he’s satisfied with his choice and actions. and that only furthers the idea he sees himself merely as an object. if you’re a tool, and you fulfill your purpose perfectly, what else is there to be besides happy?
