This is the root of Shauna's anger toward Ben. In her eyes, he is yet another reason why she had to hold her dead baby in her arms. I know it may feel easy to vilify Shauna this season but underneath everything she does is so much pain. She blames herself for the death of her baby (even though, of course, it was not at all her fault). That guilt is too heavy to bear alone. She has to push it outward, to find someone else to blame, to redirect that grief into rage, because the alternative is drowning in it.

Shauna Shipman as a character just wants to be loved but can't love anyone in return (her husband, her daughter, her love interests) because the two people she loved the most (Jackie and her son) died. Love now is absence. It is pain. It is grief.

She resorts to anger and violence because anger is an easier emotion to deal with than sadness and grief. She acts like a psychopath (someone manipulative, remorseless and unsympathetic) because she feels everything. It's easier to shut those down than confront them.

Grief, that I have lately seen expressed by other people, comes from loving someone who can no longer feel that love. You can grieve someone alive when you realize you can't love them the way you want to and in a lot of ways Shauna had been grieving for a while. Grieving then buries you under what-ifs and could-have-beens. A friendship that ended prematurely in death and a baby that never got to live are the biggest what-ifs.

I was going to write a meta on why Jackie’s reciprocated feelings for Shauna are so blatant when you read between the lines of her scenes, but just letting the show speak for itself in video form makes it even clearer. I love how much their relationship is layered in subtext and double meaning, and the further into the show we get the more this is all cemented as totally intentional.
