Just as the Sun began to make its way past noon, the door to Alfred’s study burst open, startling him to stillness. He glanced up, enraged, and his frustration only grew at the sight of Uhtred. Alfred rolled his eyes.
“Uhtred, I have told you a hundred times not to-”
“I see you took your time returning!” Uhtred shouted over him. “Did you sleep well last night, Lord King? Comfortable in your bed, while I was left to shiver in your dungeons?”
Alfred clenched his jaw, fury clawing up his throat.
“You will be quiet,” Alfred snapped sharply, “while I am speaking.”
