i hate the implication that shipping zutara means that you're downplaying colonialism. not only do comparisons between historical examples of colonizer-colonized relationships (e.g. sally hemmings and thomas jefferson) fall flat since 1) zutara originated as a desire for zuko and katara to enter a consensual relationship 2) zuko atones for mistakes and his contributions for being an agent of colonization. plus it comes out of this assumption that many of us aren't poc and are oblivious to the effects of colonialism.

Also it tends to assume that Zuko is the same as a white guy. All the historical comparisons people make are of white men mistreating women of color. People propping up kataang as a more "progressive" interracial ship, even when they acknowledge that zutara is also an interracial ship between two pocs, is disingenuous because Zuko and Aang were both created by white men using orientalist stereotypes, but one is used to project everything Americans see as heroic and virtuous about east Asians and the other is used as a "colonialism bad" metaphor without actually addressing American colonialism at all and given a lot of negative east Asian stereotypes to code him and his culture as the villains. Guess which is which.
