kate hadn't meant to work behind mcdoon and cletus' back, but the moment she had heard whispers of trout's location, she knew she couldn't linger any longer. it had been in passing through a town. she had stepped into a shop to grab a few supplies and in the receipt book, she saw his name etched in ink. the receipt had been dated just the day before.
she knew she should have told the boys. they would have left with her in a heartbeat, but this was her fight. knowing she was on his tail gave her a deeper sense of tunnel vision than she ever had, so that night, she left a letter and she and beauty galloped into the horizon.
it had taken time to catch up with him and more time to track him down. she couldn't dive into this. she observed the first two nights that he and his gang liked to drink and play poker. not much had changed. it wasn't until the third night that she made her appearance. sort of. she had slinked across the bar and murmured to the woman of the house that she wanted to try her shot, specifically with that gentleman, she said with a point towards trout. she was nervous though and eyed the drinks at the bar. the woman had sighed and poured her two shots of whiskey and told her to wait upstairs. she thanked the woman with a soft smile and headed up.
like clockwork, trout walker's curiosity was being fed as he slunk up to see what woman had a liking to him. her hat was off and she had stripped down to her undergarments so her riding attire wouldn't give her away. she was facing the window and gently looked towards her shoulder when he entered, murmuring that she had left him a little drink.
hubris at his highest, trout guffawed a noise and stepped over to take the shot, but the burning liquid choked in his throat for two reasons: the moment kate turned to face him and the second the muscles in his throat started to seize. the yellow spotted lizard venom was burning down his esophagus and into his throat, which he clutched and gasped for air to try to find some relief. she had let him choke and sputter on bile and blood for a minute or two before she sunk a bullet between his eyes. she had left an imprint of a kiss on his cheek solely to let his clan know that she had been the one to do this, to finish trout, and by the time they ran upstairs, she was dressed and gone.
she had spent the next day speeding back for the two she had left behind, only getting slowed as a storm started to roll in. the rain seemed to wash away the years of resent with the knowledge that trout walker no longer walked this earth, the rain falling in an early summer shower that was cool but not cold. it whipped by her as beauty ran, but this was the start of a new life.
when she neared the house, she saw mcdoon rise from the porch in what seemed to be shock. she pulled back beauty's reins to stop her before she slid off and met him halfway, colliding into a passionate kiss. her hands clung desperately to his bicep and chest as she melted into his kiss. now, she could properly love him without anything holding her back. now, she could finally say the words that felt strained and guilty to admit.
she tore back from his lips with a panted breath, raindrops collecting on long lashes as they fluttered open to find his. " i love you, " she panted out, a hand coming up to brush against his cheek. " i'm sorry i'm late . . . "
