This used to be standard operating procedure not even ten years ago: NEVER OUT OTHER QUEERS, even if they’re supposedly already out. Never assume that it’s okay to let third parties know that so-and-so is queer. Ever. You never know when you’ve found the one uncle with the heart condition that they can’t bear to risk telling, or the one neighbor who’s just threatening enough that they don’t mention it around, or even the grandma that they haven’t gotten around to mentioning it to yet. To anyone who follows me, I don't care about nor trust Colossal Biosciences anymore (The people behind the "Wooly Mice"). They have proven themselves to be headline-chasing grifters after this latest stunt. They are claiming to have de-extincted *Aenocyon dirus*, aka the Dire Wolf, by editing just 20 genes from the the DNA of a Grey Wolf (*Canis lupus*) to make this thing:

If it wasn't clear from their scientific names, Grey Wolves and Dire Wolves aren't remotely related to one another aside from being Canids, despite what pop culture like Game of Thrones would have you believe. If they did look like each other, it would have had to be via convergent evolution, as they only shared a common ancestor over 5 million years ago.

This distinction, however, isn't found in the publicized articles about this so-called resurrected Dire Wolf and makes their claim that they brought the Dire Wolf back by simply editing *20* genes from the genome of a Grey Wolf laughable. A Dire Wolf would have shared more in common genetically with a Maned Wolf (*Chrysocyon brachyurus*) or Bush Dog (*Speothos venaticus*) than it would with a Grey Wolf.

Bottom line, don't fall for whatever this company is trying to tell you. If the Dire Wolf were to be brought back, it wouldn't be via something like this, and certainly wouldn't *look* like this. I was literally threatened both offline and online for just visibly ID'ing as ace. Bigots will attack and do real injury to anyone and *everyone* they consider different. The trans hate just sells better on mainstream media. For now.

You see the way asshole bigots are trying to get the cis members of the LGBT+ community to turn on our trans siblings? That whole "LGB" movement? I think another issue so many ace people have issues with is that no one ever really reckoned with the widespread hate campaign. And it was widespread. I have at least one friend who was threatened with being shot if they showed up to pride as an ace person.

And yet, when it finally died down, no one like. Acknowledged what had happened. They just all turned on the next target (trans people, so it's super fun to be both) and people just sort of forgot about the vitriol and hate they sent to so many people. People just went "wow that was a wild time" if they even remember it.

The ace community is not like it once was. It has never recovered. It used to be a lot sillier and more joyful, and a lot of the ace people I know now are a lot more jaded and angry. And we have a right to be.

The aphobia always been there seething under the surface because no one ever even recognized it. It was never fixed. It just quieted down for a while, and JKR is poking at a bubble of poison again.

There was this massive hate campaign that they had the audacity to call "discourse" ("I'm just asking questions") and then everyone else just... collectively memory holed it. I don't speak up about my ace-ness often outside of tags, but honestly?

If I had had any good feeling left about this woman and her series, I'd have lost it after receiving this highly unwelcome news.

I never got harassed when attacking aces was trendy on Tumblr. I was lucky. I know I was. Aside from one incident I am still reluctant to mention outside of tags or DMs on here, I have flown beneath the radars of the small-minded on here.

What @kintatsujo and @themaginitechronicles said. If you weren't active in the community at the time, or didn't follow anyone who was, you really don't know how bad it was. People were sent hate mail and death threats. Our tags were flooded with gore and explicit material. The community was honestly fractured, and a lot of people lowkey went back in the closet, at least on here. Hell, people outside the ace community/in the larger queer community were catching strays just for supporting us. You know Thomas Sanders? Vine celebrity and darling of a large portion of the younger queer community? People openly harassed and tried to cancel him just for speaking up in support of aces.

If you know how much danger the trans community is in when JKR points her vitriol and her sycophants at them, it shouldn't take too much extrapolating to understand that her doing the same thing to the ace community puts us in the crosshairs as well.

How to Handle Having TOO MUCH To Do

So let’s say you’re in the same boat I am (this is a running theme, have you noticed?) and you’ve just got, like, SO MUCH STUFF that HAS to get done YESTERDAY or you will DIE (or fail/get fired/mope). Everything needs to be done yesterday, you’re sick, and for whatever reason you are focusing on the least important stuff first. What to do!

Take a deep breath, because this is a boot camp in prioritization.

So that’s how to prioritize. Now, how to actually do shit? That’s where the 20/10 method comes in. It’s simple: do stuff like a stuff-doing FIEND for 20 minutes, then take a ten minute break and do whatever you want. Repeat ad infinitum. It’s how I’ve gotten through my to do list, concussed and everything.
