The dichotomy of Brennan helping with ability score rolls for newer players:

  • Titan Takedown: Preps high-level base stats for the cast, with everyone having a 20 in their two most relevant ability scores and no one really having a genuine dump stat (no one's character has below a 14/+2 modifier in any ability), which allows the players to play to their class strengths and not have to worry about fucking up as much in a shorter, tighter campaign.
  • Fantasy High: Ally Beardsley rolls a 4 for Kristen's Dex and has to live with with the consequences of that for 6+ years

this episode has convinced me that it is vic, not brennan, who is sam's true narrative foil. his archnemesis. a worthy adversary who does not hesitate to throw his psychological torment right back at him

the analysis going on in the notes is delightful so to summarize:

  1. sam is brennan's foil but vic is sam's foil
  2. brennan poses no real threat to sam because at the end of the day he wants to win by following the rules. vic is a more effective adversary because they will do anything to get at sam, points be damned
  3. why does this game show have narrative foils

to pretend that horrible people cannot make good art is another way to conflate beauty and talent with integrity and morality. the works of monsters are best examined with knowledge of the author in mind but art is not inherently reflective. human beings are creative, and habitual liars- it'd be stupid to pretend art must always be a portrait of its creator

it's also a convenient oversimplification of humans to believe that a person who is horrible in one way will be horrible in every way. people can hold terrible views in one area and have something thoughtful to say in another. people can do terrible things to one person and tremendous acts of kindness and empathy to another.

We know know what babies look like, how they react to submarine, that they likely live in that area as babies, which implies as to their spawning habits.... its really great data!

Knowing full well that no media outlet is covering what is happening in Armenia, here are some updates for those who wish to stay informed:

  • For the past three weeks, azerbaijani forces have been firing at Armenian cross-border villages. Although no injuries have been reported, the gunfire has damaged residential homes. On the night of April 13, azerbaijani forces opened fire on the Armenian village of Khnatsakh in the Syunik Province, damaging the local Cultural Center.
  • The Board of Directors of the Export-Import Bank of the United States has approved two final commitments totaling more than $339 million to support aircraft exports to azerbaijani Silk Way West Airlines, which has been implicated in transferring weapons from israel to azerbaijan, and its cargo flights from israel’s ovda airbase to azerbaijan have notably increased, particularly in 2024, aligning with periods of heightened military activity by the azerbaijani regime. This follows a long-standing pattern, where Silk Way’s flights to israel have consistently risen during times of military escalation by the azerbaijani government, particularly during conflicts with Armenia and Artsakh. Since 2016, israel has been a key military supplier to azerbaijan, and ovda serves as a crucial airfield for this transfer of military materials.
  • While the US and israel are aiding and arming azeris, Hungary has blocked the EU from allocating an additional 10 million euros ($11 million) in “non-lethal” military aid to Armenia through its European Peace Facility (EPF). Unlike other EU member states, Hungary has openly supported azerbaijan in the Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh) conflict. The Hungarian Foreign Ministry reaffirmed that support three days after the outbreak of the 2020 Armenian-azerbaijani war in Artsakh.

Presumably Elaine knows what would be too far for her husband, and she probably went through the footage and only handed on choice clips to the cast, omitting anything that Sam would find objectionable. And not only does Sam have control of the show's final edit but the company already have a veto policy where cast members can refuse to allow things about them to air if they decide it makes them uncomfortable, so there was no way in hell anything he'd find objectionable would make it out of the studio even if it somehow got past his wife and his friends' own moral sense. Given that Grant O'Brien has made Sam drink urine on camera before in revenge for Sam making Grant drink toilet water, this probably barely rates on the Dropout Cast Troll Scale
