APPRECIATION POST FOR ALL OF NAT’S DIFFERENT HAIR STYLES CAUSE GOD DAMN
(Her curly hair moments will always be my favs)
Sam Wilson wasn’t one to care too much about height, he supposed. He was already tall enough to be considered manly by most American’s standard men, and childish things like comparing heights to others weren’t something Sam would worry about.
But there was something about the height between Bucky and Sam, something about Bucky being just a little taller than Sam. Something about the way Sam cocked his head a little when Bucky called his name, the way Bucky cast his eyes down, the way his eyes were so innocently infatuated in love with Sam that he didn’t bother to hide it. Something about the way Sam’s hand have to reached up, behind Bucky’s head, his fingers tangling in Bucky’s long, silky brown hair, the way Bucky’s head tilted slightly in response to Sam’s touch, the way his handsome face and that summer-sky bright blue eyes leaned affectionately closer to Sam’s sweet honey brown eyes. Something about the way their bodies were pressed together, with Bucky’s arm on his waist and Sam's arm on Bucky's shoulder. A slight tilt, a slight angle gap between them, Sam dragged back and Bucky leaned forward, a deep passionate kiss share between their lips... Something about the way Sam trembled in his arms, the way Bucky gasped for air but grinned widely when the kiss ended while his arms were still wrapped around Sam, holding him longer in the moment.
Something about that tiny space between them, not large enough for Bucky to overwhelm Sam but big enough to make him feel protected in his arms. For someone who had never cared about that small difference between them, well, what to say? Maybe Sam did care a little now.
....
You know what rocks about Sam and what they’ve kept consistent for years?
Everyone around him has his back 100%. And his confidence in that doesn’t shake. He relies on people, listens to them and talks to them like they’re family, and as a result everyone is ready to back him no matter what.
Layla being his inside woman because he doesn’t fully trust Ross (and he shouldn’t) and Sam not once questioning her loyalty. Also showcasing that Sam will always try to be 2 steps ahead of people cause he doesn’t fucking play!!!
The special forces having Sam’s back and following his orders without even blinking if he needs help or to get shit done.
Even in the mundane moments, the people in the bar and the bar tender just acknowledging him and throwing up their bottles in salute. Or when we first meet him at the VA. This man has been a leader for years and a man of the people long before the shield was even in his possession.
Natasha being impressed by his prior work in the falcon program, fury immediately wanting to recruit him, he’ll even Tony fucking stark having to go to him for help in civil war, and Steve agreeing to Sam’s plan of leaving the rest of them behind while he and Bucky go to Siberia. No one else could have convinced Steve to leave the rest of them behind to be arrested, but Sam did.
Scott’s devotion to him too, Sam asked him for help and Scott didn’t even blink when he was called. He just got his ass up and flew to Germany.
It’s no wonder why Joaquin looked at him like a deity, Joaquin knew what he was looking for in a captain and never left Sam’s side.
Don’t even get me started on Bucky, we already know he puts Sam on a pedestal that no one else can even dream of reaching.
Happy 11 years of Sam Wilson day.
Mm so the thing I said the other day about how sam feels about bucky... just to add a ship lens to that:
I think that after sam forgives him and wants to be friends again, there's a lingering weirdness. At first he thinks it's just because of the unpleasantness, then he thinks maybe buckys just a weird guy.
But then he realises. Bucky isn't weird. He's weird about Sam.
I think Bucky's "say what you need to say" is really important because he's giving space to Sam to express himself honestly and openly. He's telling Sam he's a safe space. How many times has Sam (and others) done that for him? I just think it's nice to see him return it when it was Sam who needed the support.
See the thing though is that even before the movie and the show Bucky has always been trying to reassure Sam when he’s feeling unsure or not so great about something. We see this in endgame—and it’s written in the ACTUAL script so it’s always been meant to be canon—so this isn’t just a result post-tv show.
Not only was he trying to reassure Sam about talking to old!Steve with the shield, moments earlier, Sam and Bruce are freaking out about Steve not coming back from the time travel. I’ve written meta about this before with screencaps, but Sam had FEAR and worry in his eyes (they were wide and teary) and he’s yelling at Bruce to do something. This moment too is in the official script and RIGHT just Sam is about to potentially do something reckless in his moment of panic, Bucky tells him with a soft, reassuring tone his name to grab his attention and Sam quiets and his body loosens the tension a bit coz Bucky points to him that Steve is there. These moments are seconds long in the movie but speak SO much and are part of the foundation of Bucky trying to reassure Sam and assuage his fears and other negative emotions and the seedlings for the audience to clue in that Bucky may become part of Sam’s support system in the future.
But seeing that scene in the movie and thinking about the therapy scene in the tv show, like yes 1) in canon, three years has gone by so people can grow and change but 2) Sam at the time didn’t feel safe enough to say all his feelings and when he did he was reacting to a very mean thing Bucky said (which later he admits “hurt Sam” and he regrets inflicting that hurt). But after working to make things better between them (slowly) via the show and then these three years off screen it’s clear now Bucky is being the support he’s always tried to be for Sam but now he knows HOW to do that effectively. And how he is very openly clear about making sure he says “say what you need to say” coz that didn’t happen 3 years ago and he hated that! It’s clear he wants to be someone Sam can rely on, someone who supports him, who tries to comfort him (via hugs and words), tries to reassure him and assuage fears and hell to punctuate the point, he makes sure Sam knows he’s loved. Even if we just take that at platonic face value the facts are Bucky has always tried to be that person for Sam and for awhile he faltered and failed BADLY at it but he was like “never again” and ‘did the work’ like Sam advised. And he’s succeeding this time coz Sam actually trusts him this time to tell him everything he’s feeling! He takes comfort in the hug Bucky gives him without holding back! And what Bucky says to him does make him feel better coz he has a soft smile even after Bucky leaves. He even helped lighten the mood for Sam because Sam is so so worried about Joaquin making it like…it’s a lot.
Tfatws and all of mcu sambuckys canon relationship is actually a lot more interesting if you think of them as individuals who have thoughts and feelings about each other
You know, the way you do about people you've met
Elaborating on this because i guess I don't respect my own free time
One of the things that I genuinely like about tfatws is the way that sam has really normal feelings about bucky. To him, this is a guy who he's worked with, spent a little time with, been in enough serious situations to trust him. He finds him a little annoying, but also knows he can take a joke. He likes their banter. He reaches out and wants to be friends, but is more than willing to not be when bucky starts being an actual dick to him. Then, he forgives him after bucky spends two days being decent to him again and apologises.
Is it perfectly written? No. But it feels real. The fact is that sam actually has a very relatable and accessible attitude about bucky, despite them meeting in absurd circumstances.
Buckys attitude is weirder. He comes across as mildly obsessed, implicitly stalking his location lol. He's distant and cold, and then when he sees walker with the shield he starts to lash out at sam. Sam is the one he feels like he can blame. Some of this is about steve, yes. He's projecting a lot, tying up his own self esteem in the idea of this legacy. He's also hurting sam, not entirely unintentionally. His "he was wrong about you" outburst is a deliberate insult to sam (something these fans seem to forget).
But, at the end of the day, Bucky doesn't want to be being a cunt. He wants sam to like him, he wants this relationship in his life. So he tries to fix it. Again, it's not perfect, but the broad shape of it is there.
At no point does steve factor into how sam thinks about bucky. He thinks of him as this guy he knows.
And while steve does factor into why bucky was being a dick, at no point does bucky compare sam to steve or look for steve in sam. He just doesn't. He looks at sam as sam.
@the-voice-beckons-below & @lesbiancaptnamerica I loved your conversation too much, I had to do this🫣
Sam and Bucky taking turns planning dates and serenading each other every time
They compete in who can be the corniest and who can make the other laugh the most
They give each other flowers and notes with what they mean
They make chocolates and desserts for each other no matter the time of the date
