The beef between Haymitch and Snow is so funny. The way Haymitch drank an entire pitcher of milk just so Snow wouldn't get any, so Snow kept supplying him milk throughout his entire stay in the Capitol after his victory... bro what are you doing you're the president of Panem😭
No because there’s something to be said about President Snow’s depiction in the original trilogy as this cunning, calculating and unflappable dictator, only for the curtain to be pulled back to reveal him as an extremely petty man who can’t take a single potshot to his ego. He really is just an extremely petty, extremely insecure, extremely vindictive man whose entire life has literally been keeping up the illusion of power and prestige for something that has been crumbling for ages. Who believes he’s entitled to everything he wants and rages when he’s denied it. Who takes every insult, every threat to his and the Capitol’s perceived greatness and security, intentional or no, and takes it to the furthest possible lengths in order to get back at them. Katniss sees him as intimidating and threatening because that’s the propaganda she’s been fed all her life, but in reality? Coriolanus Snow is *pathetic*. He’s a powerful man with zero morals or empathy, yes, but more than that? He’s *pathetic.*
I know it’s a running joke that Snow’s a grown man beefing with a seventeen year old and his ex of sixty plus years that he dated for three months, but genuinely. *Genuinely.* This man holds on to even the slightest insult, because he can’t take the idea of something acting or existing outside his perception of the world, and he *despises* when something shatters the perception he has of himself. *That’s* why he hates Lucy Gray so much—because she had the gall to force him to see a District girl as desirable and—heaven forbid—almost human. Because she was able to trick him and catch him off guard. Because she had the *audacity* to disappear, leaving him with the pit in his stomach of never, *never* knowing what happened to her. Because Snow *needs* control, he *needs* things to only exist and work a certain way, and that’s what made totalitarianism so appealing to him. It ensures he has the power he’s been denied all his life, yes, but more than that it allows him to ensure that the world—or at least, Panem—works the way he *thinks* it should work. The Capitol are elites who never question their status and privilege, who never need to live in anything less than luxury (the way he feels he should have). The Districts are barbaric lower class citizens who are only good for labor and entertainment. The regime is all-pervasive and all-powerful. He is the Greatest Man That Ever Lived. The Number One Peacekeeper even. Snow lands on top.
And the Games. The Games are supposes to be a dehumanizing reminder of the Districts’ savagery. That, left to their own devices, humans are selfish and violent and only out for themselves. Like Snow is. Because why would anyone ever be *not* like Snow? He literally calls himself “the best humanity has to offer.” So everyone else is either like him or worse. His experience and thoughts are the default, they are *law.* And if they aren’t? Shut up, yes they are. This is part of why he has Haymitch’s games edited so heavily, to destroy the idea that tributes would ever unite together as anything other than a pack of predators. This is why he has the tenth Games completely scrubbed from existence—so that there will be no memory of the year a “savage” from twelve survived because she won a Capitol boy’s affections. This is why he has the Games so thoroughly processed and manufactured overall—so that the Capitol citizens get their entertainment, yes, but also so that any memory of a Games that didn’t play out the way *he wants*, any example of a Games that defies *his* will, is forgotten. Seneca playing so hard into the “star-crossed lovers” bit is threatening not just because it highlighted how two kids from the poorest district were able to break the rules, but because it focused on a connection that breaks with Gaul’s teaching—that “humanity undressed” is nothing but cruelty and self-preservation.
Love shouldn’t be able to blossom in an arena. And as Snow said, he sees the whole world as an arena. Which is why he tries so hard to get into Haymitch’s head about Lenore Dove, why he hijacks Peeta to hate not the rebellion, not the districts, but *Katniss specifically.* Because as far as he’s concerned, “love” is another word for the possessiveness and obsession he felt towards Lucy Gray. And he *hates* the idea that any other version of love, any kind of love that’s genuine and equal and mutual, can exist. So he projects his feelings for Lucy Gray onto Haymitch and Lenore Dove, why he eventually has Lenore Dove killed with his signature poison when Haymitch survives the Games, when he had his mother and Sid burned alive. Why he has Peeta’s memories of Katniss be the ones targeted when he’s being hijacked. Because Haymitch and Peeta, unlike him, *loved* their girls. Truly loved, the same way Lenore Dove and Katniss love them. The way Lucy Gray most likely loved Snow, and he *can’t stand to let that love exist.* Because just by existing, they defy defies the way he sees love—as something dangerous that will inevitably leave you vulnerable to attack and betrayal.
In Snow’s mind, he’s running the world the way it’s meant to be run. The *natural* way it should be run. The way he sees the world is the *natural* way the world works. And yet, the fact that this world he runs is so heavily manufactured, that he has to go to such lengths to affirm his beliefs and keep this structure strong, is proof alone that there is nothing natural about it. And deep down, I like to think Snow knows that. At least, he’s aware of it, and he refuses to acknowledge it. Which is why he goes to such extremes whenever someone defies him—whether it be by plotting a rebellion, to eating a handful of berries, to finding friends in a death match, to even just being in love. He can’t tolerate the idea of something, anything, not going the way he thinks it should.
He’s your standard dictator, really—a small, small man with far, far too much power, trying with all his might to make himself look big.
Or something man idk I’m just yapping
friends asked me to draw a bee with a binky here you guys can have it too
bee wants their binky
don't worry she's ok
the black and white thinking on social media sites is insane how do you people interact with real life humans in your day to day life thinking in absolutes. does no one understand nuance and the complexity of humanity
Thank you Derek, menswear guide, for reminding me why paying more to be free advertising for brands is dumb.
shit ton of people are repeating the thing about hayao miyazaki saying AI art is an "insult to life itself" and just as a reminder he was talking about the zombies that team made that were intended to be scary in how much they shook, but instead reminded him of his disabled friend. the insult to life itself was referring to the team trying to make scary real symptoms that people live with.
it was a quote about ableism. if he has said other things about AI type stuff, that is a different thing. but that specific quote was about ableism.
this is the full quote.
The threat was loud and clear: Report your so-called “DEI” employees or else. What exactly “DEIA or similar ideologies” means is up in the air, but the message was out there. And so was the email address of the DEIA snitching hotline. Fake emails quickly started to roll in. ‘I don’t care, fuck these McCarthyite bastards,” one BlueSky user said, with an screenshot attached of an email to the hotline where he ironically reported Donald Trump and JD Vance for being “put in their positions solely because of their race and/or gender despite the fact that they are wholly unqualified for their jobs and, in some cases, have criminal records.” “Anyone have a script to fire off a billion e-mails an hour??” another user asked in the replies. “Anyone can email anything of any size even if it crashes the site,” one X user noted. The scope and effectiveness of this latest phase of Trump’s anti-DEI crusade remains to be seen.
FLOOD THIS :D

some things about sunrise on the reaping/the hunger games universe i'm thinking about today
- haymitch was close friends with katniss's father when they were teenagers... how many times did haymitch see her at the hob or around town and do a double take?
- burdock everdeen is lenore dove baird's distant cousin, meaning katniss is connected to lucy gray's bloodline... literally snow's worst nightmare come back to haunt him, down to genetics
- reaping day is on the fourth of july. idk what else to say about this one i think we're all on the same page about this
- katniss wanting wiress, beetee, and mags as allies despite over half of the victor tributes wanting to pair up with her... the three victors who helped haymitch win his games
- haymitch, the victor of a games with twice as many tributes, bringing two victors home as a mentor in the 74th games
- despite having the most tributes and therefore the most deadly, with the least odds of survival per tribute, the 50th hunger games had the most alliances out of any other games
- beetee's son being a tribute in the quell- i know we're all there already and it's been talked about endlessly but i'd like us to recall in catching fire when katniss tells the reader that the children of victors are reaped at a disproportionate amount... ampert was not the first nor was he the last. how many tributes were reaped to punish previous victors? "you tried to take away control from the capitol... look what we can take from you"
- the circumstances of ampert's death: mutts that were engineered just for him, just for beetee, designed to literally strip him of anything that made him recognizable while they killed him. beetee and his family didn't even have a body to bury, just a pile of bones
- we also know that at the end of sotr, beetee's wife is pregnant, but when beetee comes to district 13 in mockingjay his is alone. was his family killed in the uprising, or was yet another one of his children sent to the games as punishment for beetee's actions before and during the 2nd quarter quell?
- effie was the last person haymitch saw before the games began. she came into his launch room before he went into the tube... she was the last face he saw, the last person he touched, before the games changed him forever. she was the last person to know the "old" haymitch
- maysilee didn't even like the mockingjay pin- it wasn't a beloved token that had a deep meaning to generations before katniss. it meant nothing until katniss made it mean something- until madge, maysilee's niece, made it mean something
- gale mocking madge for wearing an especially nice dress and trying to present herself well on reaping day, and her defending herself by saying "i want to look nice if they send me to the capital" - maysilee being scorned by haymitch for her nice clothes and her necklaces until he realizes it's her own way of rebelling against the capitol... "i am going to make you see me as human too if it kills me" (they all try to dress their best for reaping day but gale & haymitch were bothered by madge & maysilee’s clothes as a status symbol)
- haymitch mentions that hattie used to tell him "fire is catching", which later became one of the slogans of the rebellion via katniss's propos with plutarch
- haymitch's token being a flint striker, and katniss being the girl on fire. katniss inciting the rebellion by succeeding at the exact task at which haymitch failed- destroying the force field. she wasn’t special, she was just in the right place at the right time and got enough support
- we've always seen the quarter quell as a way of snow getting back at katniss for her rebellion in the 74th games, but after sotr we know she is hardly the first victor to rebel against the capitol. beetee was already a rebel in his own right, wiress and mags were instrumental in haymitch's victory in the 50th games, we can infer from johanna's characterization as loud and outspoken and certainly less than palatable to the capital's propoganda that she may have had a less than ideal (to the capitol) history... how many victor tributes were reaped on purpose? how many of them won their games through an act of defiance that was covered up?
- similary, we know plutarch's plan with katniss was similar to his plan with haymitch... but surely they weren't the only two. how many other tributes, district 12 or otherwise, did plutarch and co. try to use as weapons, simply by being victims of circumstance? how many families of rebellious tributes, whether they were victors or not, were punished, because they went along with plutarch's plan thinking they had nothing left to lose seeing as they were probably going to die anyway? so much of haymitch's games was covered up and rewritten to hide his defiance of the capitol,,, how many other games were significantly or almost entirely fabricated by the capitol because of "unruly" tributes? was any of it real?
anyway i may be reaching with some of these but suzanne collins just gave us so much to think about with sotr!!! i've seen some dissent about how some of sotr disrupts the canon of thg but i think that's entirely the point... none of what katniss knew about haymitch's games was real to begin with, it's just what was fed to her by the capitol.
don't let media literacy die friends there are too many stupid people in the world already!!! mwah
what am i doing
love the symbolism of haymitch's outfit in the parade scene. he loses his "cheesy imitation coal miner hat in the accident and, rid of the headgear, our outfits become merely neutral, black and forgettable." (SOTR, 79).
he's wearing the uniform of his district, a coal miner, someone sent to the deepest parts of the earth day after day, working for scrip, not even real money, facing the highest, "most brutal" person in panem with a dead girl in his arms forcing him to confront that he did this.
how he's not haymitch- rather he's every coal miner in district 12, every person who has lost a child to the games, to starvation, to the oppression of snow's regime. he is not haymitch. he is panem.
Okay but it’s fucking brilliant that one of the themes of the book was about the distortion of history.
Usually prequels are a dangerous thing to write because unless they’re planned out well in advance, they risk contradicting lore in the main series. Even still, we knew barely anything about Haymitch’s games. They were the perfect stomping ground for new information, with a rough series of events but without a close temporal connection to the main books.
But though she had this freedom and safety net, while she could have just written a story that aligned with what we knew, Collins leaned into the idea of contradicting past lore head on and made it the damn thesis of the book; that yeah, actually, it did play out entirely differently from how the characters saw it, and yes that contradicts what you were told, that’s the point.
We didn’t really know what happened in the 50th games until we read it from Haymitch’s perspective, because what little information we did have was spliced up and edited. The video evidence was processed through the Capital, and twisted to serve their purposes.
Tackling that idea of history being written by those in power with a notoriously inconsistent medium? Goddamn, writer that you are, Suzanne Collins.
theyer old enough that they used to connect
They're older than Florida. The Floridian peninsula is the solidified runoff of the Appalachians that got caught on some coral. It's why we're like this, I think. You don't stand a chance of being normal when you were created by the shed skin of an elder god draping itself over a hollow skeleton. You're always going to be a little Off.
They used to be as tall as the Himalayas.
i’m so appreciative to suzanne for reframing the rebellion from the original trilogy as a “they saw their moment and took it” type situation and showing us that they’ve been trying, over and over, with so many failed attempts, to break the arena and incite a rebellion for decades. in this current political climate never giving up hope is so essential. haymitch wasn’t the first nor the last, and they kept going even when it seemed completely futile, and that’s what counts, and what ultimately saves them all.
