I do like that Dubai has a little emotional sub-arc for Daniel where you can actively see him switch from the “investigating high profile dangerous people for justice reasons” journalist mode, towards the “interviewing a regular person for the sake of getting their personal narrative and story out there” journalism of his youth.
Like he goes into season one very confrontational and pushy. He’s got his jaded no-nonsense reporter “take no bullshit” fully professional attitude in full force. The kind of emotional armor you wear when investigating something like the KGB. He falls back on it because it’s his most recent journalism experience.
As the series progresses and Daniel gets more of the story—a personal narrative not a government take down—he lets himself be more friendly. He jokes a bit more, he’s a little less rough around the edges, he lets the professionalism down a little.
Closer to the kind of persona you use to get a single mother working at a bar, or a veteran and his refugee boyfriend to open up to you. Or a 100 year old vampire in 1973. This time combined with the added experience of years of professional journalism.
