I have complex feelings regarding Alina’s ending. I think it’s almost perfect.

Alina losing her powers (and feel free to disagree with this) I think was ultimately a good writing decision. The overarching theme/message in these books is the idea power corrupts and Alina losing her powers fits with this theme, I really do like the fact that LB didn’t exempt Alina from the consequences of greed simply because she is the hero. Though I don’t really think this was necessarily a *good* theme and one could absolutely argue that Alina’s greed wasn’t even hers, rather than something forced upon her, like I said complex feelings. but since LB decided to engage in this theme, I feel her having Alina lose her powers makes sense narratively. I also feel like it’s was the only would’ve been able to walk away from a life they made her miserable without horrendous guilty because she was the sun summoner, she was meant to save Ravka. I actually love Malina so not only do I like her ending up with Mal from a shipping perspective but I also because she finally gets the boy she’s wanted from the beginning, the one person who just wanted her for her. She gets keep all the friends the friends she made along the way. It all seems like good writing all around and then…she’s still an outcast. People still think she’s off and strange while they find Mal hopelessly charming. A girl who’s been so defined by her need for belonging doesn’t get to belong in the end. It was so close to perfect :/

I choose to console myself with the idea that part of Alina’s character development was her no longer feeling like she needs to belong but… not even like one line saying idk “Over time they begun to find her quirks endearing” or something???

lots of ppl have mixed opinions on cardan in the first book, which is fair, but me personally, just LOOK at how subtle he is at protecting her. and i don’t just mean when he stuck his foot in the water to scare the nixies away from jude when his buds threw her and Taryn in the river, i mean these:

This one, when he thinks that dains spies are about to beat Jude’s ass over who gets the pretty prince, so he cautions her away from picking a fight w them. And that’s AFTER she’s kidnapped him LOOLLL

And this. really cute and subtle way of saying “be careful babe!” but he makes it seem sorta like an insult. like she would be wasting his time if she went and died. he keeps himself so well guarded so as to not get himself hurt again PLS. guys i am normal about him.

him reaching for her after he learned that valerian tried to kill her AGAIN. 😐 i need him.

And then this one. imagine how he felt seeing her leave the tower covered in blood knowing that valerian was in there w her. and Hollys annotation here. yeah ok im so normal- this proves that he didn’t expect his cruelty to encourage valerians murdery lust for jude. to encourage Locke to take her as his prize, to encourage nicasia to humiliate the twins to get cardans and lockes favor.

AND DONT GET ME STARTED, on when he’s drunk and his families been murdered and he’s officially elfhames #1 most wanted and he’s telling Jude to be careful, that she shouldn’t be at balekins evil little revel 😭😭 he worried more for her than he did himself.

and i could just GO ON. and i shall:

when he sends her a dress made for royalty opposed to one that made her look more like servant/ would allow Taryn to outshine her (she could never tho)

When he told Locke to piss off and began dancing w her when Locke was abt to tell her that he’s been fuxking her sis the whole time.

When he saw her (canon according to Hollys annotations) after she stole Sophie (the human servant at hollow hall) and didn’t do or say anything AND PROBABLY EVEN TOOK THE FUCKING BLAMMMEEE IM SO SICK.

But i just LOVE how cardan knows how jude is, the way that Taryn describes jude in her novella- as someone who doesn’t back down from a dare, who picks fights with anyone and everyone, who brings those that pick on her down to her level. he knows his wife so well, even in the first book, he knew her so much better than even her father. than ANYONE even Taryn. bc Taryn was all like “promise you’ll stop bothering them!” Like do you KNOW who you’re talking to lmao

I saw someone posting their pj headcanons regarding the crows so I thought I’d share mine. (Note: I’m going to try and make in line with canonical time period so if think of the clothing choices are odd, that’s why lol)

Inej: either men’s pajamas, a top and underwear (think more like shorts rather than panties) or a top and drawstring pants (I’m unsure if they’re would be women’s underwear designed to be worn under pants? I’d think so as Inej and Nina both wear pants though out the duology)

Nina: a pretty lacy nightgown or slip dress

Matthias: I think this man is chronically overheated so he probably just sleeps in his briefs

Wylan: matching silk pajama set or Jesper’s clothes

Jesper: I feel this man has extremely colorful robe he sleeps in + his briefs

Kaz: I’m not convinced this man owns pajamas tbh. I think he’d see it as unnecessary expense, if does have pajamas it probably the cheapest pair he could find and years old. He probably just falls asleep still in his suit or just kicks his shoes off, takes off his gloves and just goes to bed.
